The Jeep problems most worth knowing are front-end shimmy on solid-axle Wranglers and Gladiators, oil leaks from the 3.6L Pentastar's plastic oil filter housing, and a string of fire-risk recalls on Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xe hybrids. Several of these have free recall fixes, so check your VIN before spending money.
Jeep is part of Stellantis, and in South Florida it is mostly a Wrangler and Grand Cherokee brand, with Gladiators, Compasses and the 2014-2023 Cherokee filling in the rest. Wranglers here are often lifted, wear oversized tires and spend summers with the doors or top off, and all three of those habits change what wears out first.
RepairPal rates Jeep 3.5 out of 5, 15th of 32 brands, with average annual repair costs of about $634, slightly under the $652 all-brand average. Owners average about 0.3 unscheduled repair visits a year, and 13 percent of repairs are classed as severe, close to the 12 percent norm. The bigger cost driver for many Wrangler owners is modification, not factory defects.
The 3.6L Pentastar V6 is the engine in most Jeeps on the road, and it is generally durable apart from oil and coolant leaks. Newer engines include the 2.0L turbo four, the 4xe plug-in hybrid built on that engine, and the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six in the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer.
Popular Jeep models in South Florida
- Wrangler JL (2018-present): Solid front axle, 3.6L V6 or 2.0L turbo, optional manual transmission. Check the 2018-2019 track bar bracket recall and the manual-transmission clutch recalls.
- Wrangler 4xe (2021-present): Plug-in hybrid with a 2.0L turbo. Covered by two high-voltage battery fire recalls; follow any park-outside or do-not-charge advice until repaired.
- Grand Cherokee WK2 (2011-2021): Still common locally. 3.6L Pentastar or 5.7L Hemi, 8-speed automatic, optional Quadra-Lift air suspension. Oil cooler leaks and air suspension faults are the usual repairs.
- Grand Cherokee WL and Grand Cherokee L (2021-present): The redesign brought a three-row L model for 2021 and the two-row version for 2022. Watch the upper ball joint and rear coil spring recalls.
- Gladiator (2020-present): Pickup version of the Wrangler. Shares the clutch, steering pump wiring and front-end issues.
- Cherokee KL (2014-2023): Front-drive-based crossover with a 9-speed automatic. Early 2014-2016 cars are known for rough shifting; four-wheel-drive models have a power transfer unit recall.
- Compass (2017-present): Compact crossover, common as a lease and rental. The 2.4L Tigershark engine in earlier models has drawn oil consumption complaints.
Known Jeep problems to watch for
Front-end shimmy, often called death wobble
After hitting a bump at 45 mph or more, the front end can shake violently until you slow down nearly to a stop. It is caused by wear or looseness in the track bar, tie rods, ball joints or steering damper, and lifts and big tires make it worse. A steering damper alone only masks it. A proper fix tightens or replaces the loose part. The 18V-675 recall fixed improperly welded track bar brackets on some early JLs.
Guide: Why does my steering wheel vibrate at highway speed?Pentastar oil filter housing and cooler leaks
The plastic oil filter housing in the valley of the engine cracks with heat cycles and leaks oil, which runs down the back of the block. You often notice a burning oil smell, oil spots under the bellhousing, or a slow drop in level. Many shops replace it with an updated or aluminum housing.
Guide: Oil leaking under my car: where is it coming from?4xe high-voltage battery fire recalls
An internal battery failure can lead to a fire while parked or driving. Until the remedy is done, follow the instructions in the recall letter, which have included not plugging in and parking outside and away from structures. The repair involves software and, where the battery is found faulty, a replacement pack.
Guide: Does Florida heat hurt an EV battery?Manual transmission clutch pressure plate overheating
The pressure plate can overheat and fracture, especially with heavy clutch slipping in traffic or off-road. A burning smell and a clutch warning message are early signs. Repeated recalls added software to warn the driver and replaced clutch parts. If your Jeep has a manual, confirm every campaign is closed.
Power steering pump wiring fire risk
The wiring for the electric hydraulic power steering pump can overheat and start a fire, even with the vehicle parked. Because it can happen with the key off, this is one to check for immediately, and to follow any park-outside advice in the owner letter.
Guide: Why does my car smell like something is burning?Cherokee 9-speed shifting and power transfer unit
Early Cherokees are known for harsh, hesitant or out-of-order shifts, mostly fixed through repeated software updates. On four-wheel-drive versions, wear inside the power transfer unit can cause loss of drive or let the vehicle roll in Park, which the PTU recall addresses.
Guide: Why does my car shift hard or late?Grand Cherokee upper ball joint and rear coil spring recalls
The front upper ball joint can separate from the steering knuckle, and incorrectly installed rear coil springs can come loose while driving. Clunks from the front over bumps, or a rear end that suddenly sits lower on one side, need attention right away.
Guide: What's that clunking noise when I go over bumps?Maintenance schedule highlights
| When the oil change indicator comes on, never past 10,000 miles or 12 months | Synthetic oil and filter, tire rotation and a check of the front end. On lifted Wranglers, inspect track bar bolts, tie rod ends and steering damper at every oil change. |
| Every 20,000 to 30,000 miles | Engine air filter; cabin air filter at least yearly in Florida. Inspect door and roof seals on Wranglers and Gladiators, since leaks soak the carpet in summer storms. |
| After deep water or beach sand | Change front and rear axle fluid and transfer case fluid if water may have entered the vents. Milky gear oil means water got in. |
| Every 3 years | Brake fluid flush. Bigger aftermarket tires add stress to brakes, so inspect pads and rotors more often on modified Jeeps. |
| About 100,000 miles | Spark plugs on the 3.6L Pentastar, sooner on the 2.0L turbo per the manual. Replace the serpentine belt if it shows cracks, which happen faster in heat. |
| 10 years or 150,000 miles | Engine coolant change with the specified OAT coolant. Check the coolant level often, because Pentastar oil cooler and radiator leaks are common. |
Always confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact model and year.

Dealer or independent shop?
Jeep's recall list is long, and several items, such as the 4xe battery, the steering pump wiring and the Grand Cherokee suspension recalls, carry real fire or crash risk. A Jeep dealer is the only place those get done for free, so check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before booking anything else.
Independent shops are often the better choice for front-end work, leaks, brakes and anything related to lifts and aftermarket parts. Many dealers are cautious about modified vehicles and may blame a lift for a warranty complaint. An off-road-savvy independent shop is also more likely to fix the root cause of a shimmy instead of selling a damper.
Keep in mind that a lift or large tires can affect warranty claims on parts they stress. Keep original parts if you plan to return the Jeep to stock, and keep receipts for both the modification and maintenance.
Owning a Jeep in South Florida
Taking the doors and top off a Wrangler is half the reason to own one in Boca, but afternoon thunderstorms arrive fast from June to September. A soaked interior that stays wet can leave mildew in the carpet padding within days and corrode floor wiring connectors. Pull the drain plugs and dry the floor promptly after a downpour.
Sun is hard on Jeep soft tops, door seals and plastic trim, which fade and shrink over a few summers. A UV protectant on the top and seals, and parking in shade, keeps leaks from starting. Lifted Jeeps on big tires running I-95 at 75 mph also put far more stress on steering parts than the factory planned.
Many Jeeps are bought for hurricane season because of ground clearance, but driving through flood water is how axles, transfer cases and electrical connectors get damaged. If water reached the hubs, have the gear oils checked, and check that the 4xe high-voltage battery recall is closed before relying on that model during a storm.

Jeep FAQ
What is Jeep death wobble and is it dangerous?
It is a violent front-end shake on solid-axle Jeeps, usually set off by a bump at speed. Slowing down stops it. It is dangerous because steering control drops sharply. A shop should find the loose or worn component rather than just replacing the steering damper.
Why does my Jeep smell like burning oil?
On the 3.6L V6, a leaking oil filter housing or cooler dripping onto the exhaust is a frequent cause. Check under the rear of the engine for wet oil, and have it repaired before it gets worse.
Can I charge my Wrangler 4xe?
If a high-voltage battery recall is open on your VIN, follow the owner letter, which has included instructions not to charge and to park outside. Once the remedy is done, normal charging resumes.
Will a lift kit void my Jeep warranty?
Not automatically. The manufacturer has to show the modification caused the failure. Steering, suspension and drivetrain parts affected by a lift are the most likely to be disputed.
How often should I change axle fluid on a Jeep in Florida?
Follow the manual's normal schedule for street driving, but change it promptly after deep water or flooded roads. Water in gear oil quickly ruins bearings.
