Jeep Grand Cherokee: Problems by Year, Recalls and Repair Costs

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

The Grand Cherokee years with the most complaints are 2011 and 2014, for TIPM no-starts and the confusing electronic shifter. Later WK2s from 2016 to 2021 are the safer used buy. The newer WL has a short but serious suspension recall list, so run any 2021 or later VIN before you buy.

The Grand Cherokee is the Jeep that Boca families actually commute in. It rides on independent suspension instead of solid axles, it tows a small boat with the V8, and it fits into a Mizner Park garage. Two generations matter today: the WK2, built from the 2011 model year until the redesign, and the WL, which arrived as the three-row Grand Cherokee L for 2021 and as the regular two-row SUV for 2022.

RepairPal rates the Grand Cherokee 3.5 out of 5, 15th of 26 midsize SUVs, with average repair spending around $666 a year against $573 for the class. Visits are infrequent at about 0.3 a year, and 13 percent of repairs are rated severe, the class norm. The pattern is clear in the complaint data: early-run cars of each generation carry most of the trouble.

Because a 2022 can be either the outgoing WK2 or the new WL depending on body style and build, check exactly which one you are pricing. Parts, recalls and resale values differ a great deal between them.

Jeep Grand Cherokee generations

WL

2021-present (L), 2022-present (two-row)
3.6L Pentastar V6; 5.7L Hemi V8 on early models; 4xe plug-in hybrid built on a 2.0L turbo four from 2022

Eight-speed automatic on every engine. The three-row L came first, revealed in January 2021 and on sale that June. A key fob recognition fault led to a 2022 stop-sale. Suspension and steering recalls dominate the record so far.

WK2

2011-2022
3.6L Pentastar V6 (2011-2021); 5.7L Hemi V8 (2011-2021); 6.4L Hemi V8 in the SRT (2012-2021); 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 (from 2014); supercharged 6.2L V8 in the Trackhawk (2018-2021)

Five-speed automatic on 2011-2013 V6 models and a six-speed on 2012-2013 V8s. The 2014 facelift added the eight-speed automatic, slimmer headlights and the 8.4-inch screen. Quadra-Lift air suspension was optional and raises ground clearance to 11.1 inches.

Known Jeep Grand Cherokee problems by year

TIPM fuel pump relay no-start and stalling

2011-2013 WK2

The fuel pump relay inside the TIPM-7 power module can fail, so the engine cranks but will not fire, or quits while driving. It is the top 2011 complaint on CarComplaints, around 52,000 miles and $1,100. Recall 19V-813 covers 2011-2013 Grand Cherokees, including ones fixed under the earlier 14V-530 and 15V-115 campaigns, so check the VIN before paying.

Monostable shifter confusion and rollaways

2014-2015 WK2

The center shifter on these years returns to the middle after each selection, so it is easy to think you are in Park when you are not. NHTSA linked it to crashes and injuries, and recall 16V-240 added software that shifts to Park automatically if the driver's door opens with the engine running. Jeep dropped the design afterward. If a 2014-2015 does not auto-park when you open the door in Drive, the update may be missing.

Guide: Why does my car shift hard or late?

Alternator failure with stalling

2012-2014 WK2 with the 3.6L or 5.7L

Several recalls, among them 14V-634, 17V-435 and 17V-741, covered alternators that could fail without warning. Symptoms include a battery light, dimming lights, warning messages on the cluster and finally a stall. A replacement alternator under the recall is free, and a dying one can take a new battery down with it.

Guide: Signs your alternator is failing, and how to confirm it before you pay

Dashboard leather bubbling and shrinking

2011 WK2, most reported

The stitched dash covering on upper trims lifts, bubbles and pulls away near the windshield, and heat makes it worse. CarComplaints puts the typical fix near $1,600 at about 63,000 miles because the dash pad has to come out. A windshield sunshade every time you park slows it down.

Quadra-Lift air suspension leaks

2011-2021 WK2 with Quadra-Lift

The rubber air springs crack with age, lines chafe and the compressor wears out chasing leaks. The first signs are a corner sitting low after the SUV is parked overnight, a service suspension message, or the compressor running long after start-up. Some owners convert to coil springs, which is cheaper but loses the height settings.

EcoDiesel EGR cooler and high-pressure fuel pump

2014-2019 WK2 EcoDiesel (EGR cooler, 20V-699); 2014-2020 EcoDiesel (fuel pump, 22V-406)

A cracked EGR cooler lets coolant into the intake, where it can burn, and the fuel pump can fail and spread debris through the injection system, cutting power. Coolant loss with no visible leak or white exhaust smoke on a diesel needs a same-day look.

WL front ball joint and rear spring recalls

2021-2023 Grand Cherokee L and 2022-2023 Grand Cherokee

The front upper ball joint can separate from the knuckle under 24V-132, and rear coil springs that were installed wrong can come loose, which has gone through 23V-413, 26V-051 and now 26V-562. A clunk from one corner, a sudden lean or a wheel that looks tilted are reasons to stop driving and call the dealer.

Notable recalls

  • 16V-240 (2014-2015 Grand Cherokee): The electronic shifter could let a driver step out without being in Park. Software now shifts to Park automatically when the door opens; some earlier repairs were incomplete and need redoing.
  • 19V-813 (2011-2013 Grand Cherokee and Durango): The fuel pump relay in the TIPM-7 can fail and stall the engine. Covers vehicles that had already been through the 14V-530 or 15V-115 remedy.
  • 17V-435 (2012-2014 Grand Cherokee with electro-hydraulic power steering): The alternator can fail suddenly, causing a stall or an electrical short that could start a fire. Dealers inspect and replace it.
  • 24V-838 (2018-2019 Grand Cherokee and Durango): An ABS module fault can light the brake lights, disable ABS and stability control, and let the SUV start and leave Park without the brake pressed. Replaces 22V-426.
  • 23V-352 (2022-2023 Grand Cherokee and 2021-2023 Grand Cherokee L): The steering intermediate shaft can disconnect from its universal joint, which means a loss of steering. Do not put this one off.
  • 26V-562 (2021-2023 Grand Cherokee L and 2022-2023 Grand Cherokee): Rear coil springs can detach. Dealers replace the lower spring isolators. This campaign supersedes 23V-413 and 26V-051.

Recall repairs are free at any franchised Jeep dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since this list is not complete.

Maintenance that matters

Every oil changeLook under the back of the engine for oil on the bellhousing, a sign of the Pentastar filter housing leak, and listen for the air compressor running more than a minute after start-up on Quadra-Lift cars.
Every 12 monthsTest the battery and charging output. WK2 electronics, from the TIPM to the shifter, misbehave on low voltage, and a weak battery causes false alarms.
Every 30,000 milesFront and rear differential fluid and transfer case fluid on four-wheel-drive models, sooner if you tow or drive through standing water.
Around 60,000 milesEight-speed automatic fluid and filter, even though the schedule calls the fluid long-life. Heat and stop-and-go are hard on it.
About 100,000 milesSpark plugs on gas engines, coolant inspection, and a close look at air springs and control arm bushings.

Buying a used Jeep Grand Cherokee

  • The safest WK2 window is roughly 2016-2021. Those years are past the 2011-2013 TIPM troubles and the 2014-2015 shifter, and complaint counts on CarComplaints drop off well below the early years.
  • A 2014 or 2015 is fine if 16V-240 was done. Test it: with the engine running and the SUV in Drive, foot firmly on the brake, open the driver's door. It should shift to Park on its own.
  • On Quadra-Lift trucks, park overnight and check ride height in the morning before buying. A corner that sinks overnight means a leak and a repair bill coming.
  • For a WL, the early 2021-2023 SUVs have the ball joint, steering shaft and rear spring campaigns. Insist on dealer proof that each one is closed, and be aware some final remedies took until 2026 to arrive.

The Florida factor

Grand Cherokee dashboards and leather seats sit under a big windshield, and a black interior in a Town Center parking lot in August reaches temperatures that bubble the 2011-era dash covering and crack seat bolsters. A reflective windshield shade and ceramic tint on the side glass are the cheapest protection you can buy for this SUV.

Florida's year-round A/C load keeps the alternator working hard, which is one reason the 2012-2014 alternator recalls are worth closing out before summer. If the voltage gauge or battery light flickers in a long I-95 crawl with the A/C on max, have the charging system tested.

Air suspension rubber dislikes heat and ozone, and a Grand Cherokee that sits for the summer at a Highland Beach condo can settle onto its bump stops. Before you leave for the season, put it on a battery maintainer and ask someone to start it and let it rise to ride height every few weeks.

Jeep Grand Cherokee FAQ

What is the most reliable Grand Cherokee year?

Among the WK2s, the later model years from about 2016 to 2021 draw far fewer complaints than 2011 or 2014. For the WL, it is too early to name a best year, but recall work on 2021-2023 SUVs must be complete.

Why does my Grand Cherokee crank but not start?

On a 2011-2013, the TIPM fuel pump relay is a known cause and has a recall. On any year, check the battery and the key fob battery next. A 2022 that does not recognize its fob may need a radio frequency hub module fix.

Is Quadra-Lift worth keeping?

If it works and you use the height settings, yes. If it keeps leaking and you never go off-road, a quality coil spring conversion is cheaper to own, though you lose the adjustable ride height.

Does the Grand Cherokee 4xe have a battery recall?

Yes. Recall 25V-741 covers 2022-2026 Grand Cherokee 4xe models for a high-voltage battery fire risk. Follow the owner letter about parking outside and not charging until the remedy is done.

Can I tow a boat with a Grand Cherokee?

Many can, but the tow rating depends on the engine, axle ratio and towing package, so read the figure for your exact SUV in the owner's manual before hitching up. If you launch at salt water ramps, rinse the hitch and brakes afterward and change the axle and transmission fluids more often.

Guides for Jeep Grand Cherokee owners

Car won't start and makes no sound at all: where to look first
Total silence usually means the start request never reaches the starter. The most common reasons are a completely flat battery, the car not detecting your key, the shifter not reading Park, or a blown starter fuse or relay. Start by checking whether the dash lights come on, because that one observation splits the list in half.
Signs your alternator is failing, and how to confirm it before you pay
The clearest signs of a failing alternator are a battery or charging light while driving, lights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev, and a battery that keeps going flat even when it tests good. A meter on the battery with the engine running should read roughly 13.5 to 14.7 volts. Much lower, or above about 15, means the charging system needs attention.
What's that clunking noise when I go over bumps?
A clunk or knock over bumps usually comes from worn sway bar end links, a tired strut mount, or worn control arm bushings, all of which let metal parts tap together. Before you book anything, empty the trunk and check that the spare and jack are tied down, because loose cargo makes the same sound. A clunk paired with loose or wandering steering can be a ball joint and needs prompt attention.
How do I keep the Florida sun from cracking or melting my dashboard?
The cheapest protection is a fitted windshield sunshade every time you park, plus a water-based UV protectant on the dash every few weeks. A dashboard in a sunny parked car can average over 150 degrees within an hour, and that heat dries out the plastic until it cracks or makes some dashes go soft and sticky. Once a dash is cracked, a molded cover is the affordable fix, because full replacement often runs $800-$2,500 with airbag work.
Oil leaking under my car: where is it coming from?
Dark brown or black drips under the front half of the car are almost always engine oil, and the most common sources are a loose drain plug or filter, a hardened valve cover gasket, or a leaking oil pan gasket. A few drops a day is a slow seep you can plan around, while a puddle the size of a dinner plate overnight needs attention this week. The key is to keep the dipstick above the low mark while you get it fixed.
What should a pre-purchase inspection check on a used car?
A proper pre-purchase inspection puts the car on a lift and checks the engine, transmission, brakes, tires, suspension, frame, A/C and electronics, plus a scan for stored and recently cleared trouble codes. Expect to pay about $100-$250 at an independent shop and more for European or exotic models, which is small next to the repair bills it can expose.
