Chrysler today is mostly two vehicles, the Pacifica minivan and the 300 sedan that ended in 2023, plus a lot of older Town & Country vans still on the road. The issues worth knowing are Pacifica Hybrid battery and wiring recalls, nine-speed transmission complaints on the Pacifica and 200, and the aging 3.6 V6 that powers almost all of them.
Chrysler's lineup has shrunk to a minivan brand with a famous sedan in its recent past. If you own a Chrysler in Palm Beach County, odds are it is a Pacifica hauling kids and grandkids, a 300 that has been someone's comfortable highway car for a decade, or a Town & Country that refuses to die. All three share the 3.6 Pentastar V6, and most of what goes wrong with them as they age is either that engine, the transmission behind it, or the long list of electrical recalls Stellantis has issued.
The Pacifica is two different vehicles under one name. The gas version uses a nine-speed automatic. The Plug-In Hybrid uses an electrically driven transmission, a 16 kWh battery under the second row and its own inverter and charging hardware. That hybrid has had more safety recalls than most cars, several of them fire-related, so a used Pacifica Hybrid deserves a VIN check before anything else.
Out of warranty, the 300 and Town & Country are cheap to keep on the road because their parts are shared with millions of other Stellantis vehicles. The Pacifica Hybrid is the exception: high-voltage work belongs at a dealer or an EV-trained shop, and battery parts are not something an average general shop stocks.
Popular Chrysler models in South Florida
- Pacifica (2017-present): Gas models have the 3.6 V6 and a nine-speed automatic, and AWD became available for 2021. Early 2017-2018 vans carry the longest recall list, including a transmission weld defect on 2018 gas models and a right front lower control arm that could separate on 2018 vans.
- Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid (2017-present): Roughly 30 miles of electric range, then the gas engine takes over. Recalls cover the high-voltage battery, a 12-volt isolator post that can overheat, inverter diodes and a transmission wiring connector that can shut the engine off. Ask for proof every campaign was completed.
- 300 (2011-2023): Rear or all-wheel-drive sedan with the 3.6 V6 or 5.7 Hemi. Comfortable and durable, but the front suspension wears through tension strut bushings and tie rod ends, and early cars had alternator, shifter and airbag recalls.
- Town & Country (2008-2016): The Pacifica's predecessor and a twin of the Dodge Grand Caravan. Most local vans have the 3.6 V6 and a six-speed automatic. Sliding door hardware and the rear A/C lines that run under the floor are the usual repairs.
- 200 (2015-2017): Midsize sedan with a 2.4 four-cylinder or 3.6 V6 and a nine-speed automatic that drew many shifting complaints. Recalls covered a park rod that could keep the car from holding in Park and a harness crimp that could shift it to neutral.
- Voyager (2020-present): A lower-priced, gas-only Pacifica sold mostly to fleets for several years. Mechanical parts and service match the gas Pacifica.
Known Chrysler problems to watch for
Pacifica Hybrid high-voltage battery fire recall
NHTSA campaign 22V077 warned that these vans could catch fire while parked, even switched off, and told owners not to charge them and to park them outdoors until repaired. It was later superseded by campaign 24V538. The remedy involves battery control software and inspection, and replacing the battery pack where needed. A van with this campaign still open should be parked outside and taken to a dealer, not to a general shop.
Pacifica Hybrid 12-volt isolator post overheating
Campaign 20V334 covers a 12-volt isolator post behind the driver's seat that can develop high resistance, heat up and start a fire whether the van is on or off. Spilled drinks in the second row are part of the problem, so the fix includes a waterproof gasket. Until it is repaired, the guidance is the same as the battery recall: park outside and away from buildings.
Guide: Why does my car smell like something is burning?Nine-speed automatic shifting complaints
The 948TE nine-speed is known for harsh or hesitant shifts, especially 2-3 and 3-2 at low speed, and for a slow kick-down when you ask for passing power. Most cases are improved, not cured, by transmission software updates and an adaptive relearn, which a dealer typically charges $150-$300 to perform out of warranty. A van that slips or flares between gears needs a fluid check and diagnosis, which can run $150-$250 before any repair is quoted.
Guide: Why does my car shift hard or late?3.6 V6 valvetrain tick and misfire
A worn roller rocker arm on the Pentastar starts as a tick at idle and progresses to a misfire code on one cylinder. Early 2011-2013 engines also had a left cylinder head problem that Chrysler once covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles, now expired. A rocker and lash adjuster job usually costs $900-$1,800 per bank, more if the cam is scored.
Guide: Why does my engine idle rough or shake at a stop?Leaking oil cooler and filter housing
On a 300 or Town & Country with over 80,000 miles, the plastic filter housing tucked between the cylinder heads is one of the most common leak sources. You may see oil seeping at the back of the engine or smell it burning on the exhaust after a drive on I-95. Plan on $450-$900 to replace it, since the intake has to come off to reach it.
Guide: Oil leaking under my car: where is it coming from?300 front suspension wear
The 300 is heavy at the front, and the tension strut bushings, lower control arms and tie rod ends wear out sooner than owners expect. Symptoms are a clunk over bumps, a shimmy under braking, and inner tire wear. Replacing the tension struts and outer tie rods with an alignment typically costs $500-$900 at an independent shop.
Guide: What's that clunking noise when I go over bumps?Alternator and shifter recalls on the early 300
Two alternator campaigns, 14V634 and 17V435, cover 300s whose alternators could fail suddenly and stall the car or, in some cases, short and burn. A separate campaign, 16V240, addresses the 2012-2014 electronic shifter, which could let a driver exit the car without it in Park. All are free at a dealer.
Guide: Signs your alternator is failing, and how to confirm it before you payMaintenance schedule highlights
| When the oil change indicator calls for it, 10,000 miles or 12 months at most | Full synthetic oil and filter, tire rotation, multipoint inspection. A minivan that does short school and grocery runs in the heat is a severe-service vehicle, so 5,000-7,500 miles is a sensible target. |
| Every 20,000 miles or yearly | Cabin air filter. Pacifica owners in humid South Florida often notice a musty smell before the filter is due, and an earlier change helps. |
| Around 30,000-40,000 miles | Engine air filter, brake fluid test, inspect the sliding door tracks and lubricate the rollers. |
| 100,000 miles | Spark plugs on the 3.6 V6, coolant service and transmission fluid service per the Chrysler schedule. Inspect serpentine belt, idler pulleys and hoses. |
| Pacifica Hybrid, ongoing | Use the gas engine at least occasionally if you charge every night, keep software and recall work current at a dealer, and keep the area behind the driver's seat dry. |
Always confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact model and year.

Dealer or independent shop?
A Pacifica Hybrid should see a Chrysler dealer for every recall, every high-voltage concern and any warning about the hybrid system. Those campaigns are free, the repairs need factory software, and most general shops are not equipped to work on the high-voltage battery. Gas Pacifica owners also need the dealer for transmission software updates and radio or camera reflashes.
For the 300 and Town & Country, which are long out of factory warranty, an independent shop handles almost everything at lower cost. Typical Palm Beach County labor is about $130-$175 an hour at independents and $185-$250 at dealer service departments. Suspension, brakes, oil leaks, A/C and Pentastar valvetrain work are all routine independent jobs.
Wherever you go, ask for the old parts back on a rocker or oil housing job, and check that the shop lists a new revised housing rather than resealing the old one.
Owning a Chrysler in South Florida
Minivans in Boca Raton live a hard version of the short-trip life: school pickup lines idling with the A/C on, five-minute hops between errands, and long sits in a sun-baked lot at a game or the beach. That pattern keeps oil from fully warming, which is why a shorter change interval makes sense even when the indicator says otherwise.
Town & Country and older Pacifica rear A/C lines run under the body, where salt spray from A1A and standing water from summer storms speed up corrosion. A rear A/C that blows warm while the front stays cold is often a pinhole leak in those lines, not a failed compressor.
If you keep a Pacifica Hybrid, the recall parking guidance matters more here than in most places, because many local condos and townhomes have tight shared garages. Until every fire-related campaign is closed on your VIN, park it outside. During hurricane season, do not leave any plug-in hybrid charging in a garage that may flood, and have a dealer inspect it if water ever reaches the floor.

Chrysler FAQ
Can I still charge my 2017 or 2018 Pacifica Hybrid?
Only once the battery recall work is complete on your VIN. Until then, the official guidance is not to charge it and to park it outside, away from buildings. Check the status at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with any Chrysler dealer.
Is the Chrysler 300 expensive to maintain?
No, by sedan standards. It shares its engines and much of its hardware with the Dodge Charger, so parts are inexpensive. Budget for front suspension wear and, on V8 cars, a lifter or cam job at high mileage.
Why does my Pacifica shift roughly at low speed?
It is a known trait of the nine-speed automatic. A dealer can check for updated transmission software and run an adaptive relearn. If the shifts get worse, or the van slips or flares between gears, have the fluid level and condition checked.
Does a used Town & Country make sense?
Yes, if the price reflects the age. Have a shop check for oil filter housing leaks, rear A/C line corrosion and sliding door operation before buying.
