Ford trucks and SUVs are cheap to keep on the road for routine work, but a handful of known failures, such as EcoBoost cam phasers, the internal water pump on the 3.5L V6 and Explorer rear axle bolts, can turn into four-figure bills. Check the VIN for open recalls first, because Ford has issued many on its best sellers.
Ford is one of the most common brands in Palm Beach County driveways, led by the F-150, the Explorer, the Escape and the Bronco Sport. That volume is an advantage for owners: almost every independent shop knows these vehicles, used and aftermarket parts are plentiful, and labor guides are well established.
RepairPal gives Ford a 3.5 out of 5 reliability rating, 21st of 32 brands, with an average annual repair cost of about $775 against an all-brand average of $652. Owners visit a shop for unscheduled repairs about 0.3 times a year, but 15 percent of those repairs are rated severe. In practice that means most years are cheap and the occasional year is expensive.
The expensive years usually trace back to a short list of engineering issues: the 10-speed automatic's shift quality, cam phasers on the 3.5L EcoBoost, coolant leaks on some EcoBoost four-cylinders, and the timing-chain-driven water pump hidden inside the 3.5L V6. Ford's recall volume is also high, so a free fix may already exist for the problem you have.
Popular Ford models in South Florida
- F-150 (2015-2020, 2021-present): Aluminum-body truck with 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L V8 and, from 2021, the PowerBoost hybrid. The 10-speed automatic arrived for 2017 on many trims. Brake master cylinder and cam phaser issues are the ones to ask about.
- Explorer (2011-2019, 2020-present): The 2011-2019 front-drive-based Explorer with the 3.5L V6 has the internal water pump and rear toe link recalls. The 2020 and later rear-drive Explorer has the rear axle bolt recalls.
- Escape (2020-present): The 1.5L three-cylinder, 2.0L EcoBoost and 2.5L hybrid versions all have engine-related recalls, including oil separator and fuel injector fire risks on the 1.5L.
- Bronco Sport (2021-present): Shares the 1.5L engine and many recalls with the Escape. Popular with younger Boca drivers and beach-goers.
- Mustang (2015-2023, 2024-present): The 5.0L Coyote V8 is durable; the 2018 and later 10-speed shares the shift complaints seen in the F-150. Convertibles need top drain maintenance in the rainy season.
- Expedition (2018-present): Full-size SUV with the 3.5L EcoBoost and 10-speed, so it shares the F-150's cam phaser and transmission story.
- Fusion and Focus (through 2020 and 2018): Still common as second cars. The 2012-2016 Focus with the PowerShift dual-clutch automatic and EcoBoost Fusions with coolant intrusion are the ones to inspect before buying.
Known Ford problems to watch for
3.5L EcoBoost cam phaser rattle
A loud rattle for one to three seconds at cold start, sometimes with a check engine light, points to worn cam phasers or a stretched timing chain. Ford ran a PCM reprogramming program (21B10) and owners report a related cam phaser coverage program (21N03); both have expiration dates that may have passed. Out of warranty, a full phaser and timing set replacement is a big job.
Guide: What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?10-speed automatic harsh or erratic shifts
Owners report clunky downshifts while slowing, flare between gears and occasional hard engagement. Ford has issued multiple software updates through technical service bulletins, and class action lawsuits have been filed over the 10R80. Ask a shop to check for updated calibration before anyone recommends a rebuild. Separately, NHTSA 18V-213 added a missing park roll pin on some 2017-2018 F-150s.
Guide: Why does my car shift hard or late?Internal water pump on the 3.5L V6
The water pump sits behind the timing cover and is driven by the timing chain. When its seal fails, coolant can leak into the engine oil, which can ruin bearings if ignored. Warning signs are a slowly dropping coolant level with no visible leak, a sweet smell, or milky oil on the dipstick. Replacing it means removing the timing cover, so it is often done with the chain.
Guide: Sweet smell from my car, like maple syrup: is it a coolant leak?Explorer rear axle bolt fracture
A rear axle horizontal mounting bolt can break, which can let the driveshaft disconnect or the vehicle roll in Park without the parking brake set. Ford recalled the trucks more than once because early remedies were not enough. A clunk from the rear when accelerating or shifting is a reason to check status right away.
1.5L EcoBoost oil and fuel leaks with fire risk
A cracked oil separator housing or a cracked fuel injector can drip onto hot engine parts. Ford's 22V-859 remedy added leak-detection software and a drain tube, and a later campaign plans to replace the fuel rail and injectors. Any raw fuel smell from an Escape or Bronco Sport should be treated as urgent.
Guide: Why does my car smell like something is burning?Coolant intrusion on 1.5L and 2.0L EcoBoost four-cylinders
Coolant can seep into the cylinders through the head gasket area, causing white exhaust smoke on startup, misfires and a coolant reservoir that keeps going down. Lawsuits followed and Ford revised the block design. Caught early, some cars get a head gasket; many end up with a replacement engine.
Guide: Why is white smoke coming from my exhaust?PowerShift dual-clutch transmission shudder
The dry dual-clutch automatic is prone to shudder from a stop, slipping and a delay engaging, especially in heavy traffic. Ford extended clutch coverage and a class action was settled, but most cars are now outside those programs. A used one should be test-driven in stop-and-go traffic before you buy.
Guide: Why is my transmission slipping?Maintenance schedule highlights
| Every oil life monitor alert, no later than 10,000 miles or 12 months | Synthetic blend or full synthetic oil per the manual, filter, tire rotation and multi-point inspection. EcoBoost engines are harder on oil in heat and traffic; changing around 5,000 miles is cheap protection for timing chains and phasers. |
| Every 20,000 miles | Cabin air filter. In South Florida, replace it every 12 months regardless of mileage, because the A/C runs year round. |
| Every 30,000 miles | Engine air filter, more often if you park near construction or drive sandy roads near the beach. |
| Every 3 years | Brake fluid flush. Florida humidity speeds up moisture absorption in the fluid. |
| 60,000 miles | Spark plugs on most EcoBoost engines. Turbo engines are hard on plugs and a worn set shows up as a stumble under load. |
| 100,000 miles | Spark plugs on non-turbo engines such as the 5.0L V8 and 3.5L V6. Inspect the coolant and the water pump weep area on 3.5L V6 Explorers. |
| 10 years or 150,000 miles | First engine coolant change with Motorcraft coolant, then every 5 years or 60,000 miles. Towing or high heat counts as severe use, so consider an automatic transmission fluid service sooner than the normal schedule. |
Always confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact model and year.
Typical Ford repair costs
| Job | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Synthetic oil change | $80-$140 | The 3.5L EcoBoost and 5.0L take 6 to 8 quarts. |

Dealer or independent shop?
Recalls, campaigns and warranty repairs belong at a Ford dealer, and with Ford's recall count that matters more than with most brands. Before paying anyone for an Explorer clunk, an Escape fuel smell or an F-150 shift complaint, call a dealer service desk with your VIN and ask what campaigns are open or expired.
Outside of that, Fords are some of the easiest vehicles for an independent shop to service. Parts are everywhere, the factory service information is available by subscription, and labor rates in Palm Beach County are typically well below dealer rates. For brakes, suspension, A/C and maintenance, an independent shop is usually the better value.
For a cam phaser job or a transmission rebuild, get two written estimates and ask whether the quote uses genuine Motorcraft or updated revision parts. On the 3.5L EcoBoost, Ford has revised phaser parts more than once, and an old-revision part can bring the rattle back.
Owning a Ford in South Florida
An F-150 or Expedition towing a boat to the Hillsboro Inlet ramp on a 92 degree day is about as hard as these drivetrains work. Heat and towing raise transmission fluid temperature, so trucks that tow regularly should get fluid service on the severe schedule, and the transmission cooler in front of the radiator should be rinsed of salt spray after launch days.
Ford's aluminum bodies do not rust like steel, but the steel frames, brake lines and hardware underneath do. Trucks that live near A1A or get dunked at boat ramps need an underbody freshwater rinse and a yearly look at brake lines, which is cheap compared with a corroded line failing.
Snowbird Explorers and Escapes that sit for four or five months come back with weak batteries and, on the 1.5L engines, sometimes with fuel smells that have to be taken seriously. Before you leave for the summer, close any open recalls, top up fluids and put the battery on a maintainer.

Ford FAQ
Is a cold-start rattle on my F-150 serious?
On a 2017-2020 3.5L EcoBoost, a short rattle at startup usually means worn cam phasers. It will not fail suddenly most of the time, but it gets worse and can set codes. Have it diagnosed and ask the dealer whether any program still applies to your VIN.
How often should I change the oil in a Ford EcoBoost in Florida?
The oil life monitor may allow up to 10,000 miles, but heat, short trips and towing count as severe service. Around 5,000 miles with the specified synthetic oil is a sensible interval for turbo engines here.
Are Ford recalls free if I bought the car used?
Yes. Safety recalls are free for any owner, with no mileage or age limit, at any Ford dealer. Customer satisfaction programs and extended warranties often do have time limits.
Is the Ford 10-speed transmission bad?
It is not prone to catastrophic failure in most trucks, but harsh or odd shifting is common. Software updates fix many complaints. Ask for the latest calibration and an adaptive relearn before anyone suggests replacement.
Can an independent shop work on my Ford without hurting the warranty?
Yes. You can use any shop for maintenance and non-warranty repairs. Keep receipts that show the oil specification, date and mileage.
