Dodge Owner's Guide: Problems, Costs and Repair in Boca Raton

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

Most Dodge trouble in South Florida traces back to two engines and a handful of recalls: the 3.6 Pentastar V6 with its rocker arm and oil filter housing problems, and the 5.7 Hemi V8 with lifter and camshaft wear. Run your VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup first, because alternator, fuel pump relay and Takata airbag recalls are still open on some Chargers and Durangos.

Dodge is a performance and family brand built almost entirely on a few shared parts bins. A Charger, a Durango and a Grand Caravan from the same decade can share the same V6, the same alternator and the same electrical module, so one weakness tends to show up across the whole lineup. That is useful to know: a problem that is well documented on one Dodge is usually well documented, and well understood by mechanics, on the others.

Around Boca Raton the cars you see most are the Charger and Challenger, the Durango, and a long tail of Grand Caravans and Journeys that are out of production but still common as second cars and rideshare vehicles. Most are past their 5-year or 60,000-mile powertrain coverage, so the owner pays and gets to choose the shop.

These are simple cars to work on by modern standards. Parts are cheap, aftermarket support for the Hemi and Pentastar is huge, and most general shops have scan tools that read Dodge modules. Where an independent can struggle is programming new modules, which needs factory software, and recall work, which only a franchised dealer does free.

Popular Dodge models in South Florida

  • Charger (2011-2023 sedan): Offered with the 3.6 V6, 5.7 Hemi, 6.4 392 and supercharged Hellcat engines, and an eight-speed automatic on every engine by 2015. The battery lives in the trunk, which catches people out on a no-start. The 2024 and later Charger is a different car.
  • Challenger (2008-2023): Shares most mechanical parts with the Charger. Wide performance tires wear quickly and cost a lot, and V8 cars eat front brakes. Many local Challengers are weekend cars that sit.
  • Durango (2011-present): Three-row SUV on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Early 2011-2013 trucks carry the most recalls, including the fuel pump relay inside the TIPM power module. The 2014 update brought the eight-speed automatic.
  • Grand Caravan (2008-2020): Most local examples have the 3.6 Pentastar and six-speed 62TE automatic. Power sliding doors, rear A/C lines and the 62TE's shift quality are the usual complaints as mileage climbs.
  • Journey (2009-2020): Sold with a 2.4 four-cylinder or the 3.6 V6. Recalls on 2016 models include a transmission pump that can seize and a crank or cam sensor that can stall the engine.
  • Dart (2013-2016): Compact sedan. Cars with the 1.4 turbo and dual dry clutch automatic were recalled for stalling and for a control module bracket that could let the car drop into neutral.

Known Dodge problems to watch for

3.6 Pentastar rocker arm and lash adjuster failure

Charger, Challenger, Durango, Grand Caravan, Journey with the 3.6 V6, roughly 2011-2020

A needle bearing inside one of the roller rocker arms wears out, the rocker gets loose, and the engine develops a steady tick at idle that often turns into a misfire code on one cylinder. Left alone, the damaged roller can chew a camshaft lobe. The repair is rockers and lash adjusters on the affected bank, and a camshaft if the lobe is marked. Typical South Florida cost is $900-$1,800 for rockers and adjusters on one bank, and $1,600-$2,800 if a cam is needed. A 2026 class settlement extended coverage on these parts, but only for 2015-2020 vehicles bought in a short list of emissions-warranty states, and Florida is not one of them.

Left cylinder head valve seat wear on early Pentastars

2011-2013 Charger, Challenger, Durango, Grand Caravan, Journey, Avenger with the 3.6 V6

Early 3.6 engines could wear the valve guides and seats on the left head, which usually shows up as a misfire on cylinder 2 and a flashing or steady check engine light. Chrysler extended coverage on that head to 10 years or 150,000 miles, which has now run out on nearly every car. Out of pocket, a replacement left head runs about $1,800-$3,000 at an independent shop. A compression or leak-down test confirms it before anyone pulls the head.

Guide: Why does my engine idle rough or shake at a stop?

Oil filter housing and oil cooler leak

All 3.6 Pentastar Dodge models

The Pentastar's oil filter housing is plastic and sits in the hot valley between the cylinder heads, with the oil cooler bolted to it. After years of heat cycles it cracks or its seals harden, and oil runs down the back of the engine onto the bellhousing. Owners notice a burning oil smell and drops under the rear of the engine. Replacement with the revised housing typically costs $450-$900, since the intake plenum has to come off.

5.7 Hemi lifter and camshaft wear

Charger, Challenger and Durango R/T and other 5.7 V8 trims

The rollers on the Hemi's hydraulic lifters, including the cylinder-deactivation lifters, can stop turning and skid on the cam. The first sign is a tick that gets louder, then a misfire on one or two cylinders. Metal from the cam then circulates through the engine, so waiting rarely helps. The fix is a camshaft and full set of lifters, typically $2,800-$4,800 at an independent shop. Long idling and stretched oil changes are the conditions most often blamed.

Alternator failure recalls on V6 cars

2011-2014 Charger, Durango and related models with the 3.6 V6 and 160-amp alternator

NHTSA campaigns 14V634 and 17V435 cover alternators that can fail suddenly, which can stall the car with no warning and in the second campaign carries a fire risk. Symptoms before failure include a battery light, dimming lights and electrical glitches. If the recall is open the dealer replaces it free. If it was done years ago and the replacement has now worn out, an alternator replacement typically costs $550-$950.

TIPM fuel pump relay stalls and no-starts

2011-2013 Durango

The Totally Integrated Power Module is the fuse and relay box under the hood. On early Durangos its internal fuel pump relay can fail, so the engine cranks but will not start, or stalls while driving. Recalls 15V115 and 19V813 address it. Outside recall coverage, a replacement TIPM plus programming runs about $600-$1,300.

Uconnect 8.4 touchscreen bubbling and ghost touches

Charger, Challenger and Durango with the 8.4-inch Uconnect screen, mid-2010s on

A widely reported failure on the larger Uconnect screens is the touch layer separating from the display: first a bubble or haze, then phantom presses that change stations or place calls. Owners and repair suppliers link it to heat. There is no recall. A specialist typically replaces the screen and digitizer for $300-$700, while a dealer usually quotes a whole radio at well over $1,000.

Maintenance schedule highlights

Every oil change indicator alert, no later than 10,000 miles or 12 monthsSynthetic oil and filter, tire rotation, brake and fluid inspection. In Boca Raton heat and traffic, many owners change Hemi oil closer to 5,000-6,000 miles, and that is cheap insurance for the lifters.
Every 10,000 milesInspect engine air filter, brake pads, suspension, exhaust and CV boots. Replace the cabin filter at least yearly in Florida, because the A/C runs all year.
Around 30,000 milesEngine air filter replacement on most models, sooner if the car is parked near construction dust. Brake fluid condition check, since humid air shortens its useful life.
100,000 milesSpark plugs on the 3.6 V6, plus coolant and transmission fluid service per the Dodge schedule. Hemi plug intervals differ by year, so check your manual. Inspect the serpentine belt and hoses, which age faster in engine bay heat.
Every 3-4 yearsReplace the 12-volt battery before it strands you. In South Florida heat, three years is a normal life and four is a good one.

Always confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact model and year.

Typical Dodge repair costs

JobTypical cost
Synthetic oil change, 3.6 V6$80-$130
Synthetic oil change, 5.7 Hemi$90-$150
Front brake pads and rotors, Charger or Durango$400-$700
Pentastar oil filter housing replacement$450-$900
Pentastar rocker arms and lash adjusters, one bank$900-$1,800
Hemi camshaft and lifter replacement$2,800-$4,800
Alternator replacement, 3.6 V6$550-$950
Eight-speed transmission fluid and filter service$350-$550
A/C compressor replacement$1,200-$2,000

Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.

Dealer or independent shop?

Use the dealer for anything a recall or warranty covers, because it costs you nothing and only a franchised Dodge dealer can do it. That includes the alternator, fuel pump relay and airbag campaigns above. Dealers also have the factory software to install and program a new TIPM, a new radio or a body control module without a workaround.

For everything else on an out-of-warranty Dodge, a good independent shop is usually better value. Labor in Palm Beach County runs roughly $130-$175 an hour at independents against $185-$250 at dealers, and on a long job like a Pentastar rocker or Hemi cam replacement that gap is hundreds of dollars.

Ask any shop, dealer or not, whether they will measure the camshaft before quoting a tick on either engine. A shop that only replaces lifters on a Hemi with a damaged cam will sell you the same repair twice.

Owning a Dodge in South Florida

Check your VIN for the Takata passenger airbag recalls, such as 18V021 and 19V018 on the 2013 Charger. Those inflators degrade faster after years of heat and humidity, which is exactly the South Florida pattern, and the fix is free. Cars that have changed hands several times are the likeliest to have missed the letter.

Charger and Challenger interiors are dark and the glass is steep, so cabins and dashboards cook in an unshaded lot at Town Center or a beach garage. That heat is hard on the large Uconnect screens and on the battery in the trunk, which sits right above a hot exhaust and gets little airflow. A sunshade and a yearly battery test both pay for themselves.

Stop-and-go on Glades Road and I-95 with the A/C on high is the worst case for a Hemi: long idling, low oil flow at the top of the engine and hot oil. Keep oil changes short and listen for a tick that gets louder over a few weeks. For a Challenger that sits all season in a garage, use a maintenance charger, because a dead battery in a car that rarely moves is the most common call these cars generate.

Dodge FAQ

Is the Hemi tick normal?

A light, even ticking from the injectors and valvetrain is normal on a Hemi. A tick that gets louder, comes from one side, or arrives with a misfire code is not, and usually points to a failing lifter. Have it checked within a few weeks rather than months.

How do I check whether my Dodge has open recalls?

Enter the 17-character VIN from your windshield or registration at nhtsa.gov/recalls. It lists every open campaign for that exact car. Any Dodge dealer will do the recall work free, even if you bought the car used.

Can an independent shop service a Hellcat or SRT?

Yes for brakes, tires, oil and most mechanical work, as long as they use the specified oil and brake parts. Supercharger, module programming and warranty work usually belong at a dealer or a performance specialist.

Does the 2026 FCA valve train settlement cover my Florida car?

Not if the car was bought or leased in Florida. The extended coverage applies to 2015-2020 3.6 vehicles in a short list of emissions-warranty states, such as California and Massachusetts.

Guides for Dodge owners

What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?
It depends on the sound. A light metallic pinging when you accelerate uphill is usually fuel detonation, often from the wrong octane. A fast tick that follows engine speed is usually the valvetrain. A deep, heavy knock from low in the engine that gets louder with RPM is often a worn connecting rod bearing, and that one means you should shut the engine off and have it towed.
Why does my engine idle rough or shake at a stop?
A rough, shaky idle almost always means one or more cylinders are not firing cleanly. The three usual suspects are worn spark plugs, a failing ignition coil and an air leak in a vacuum hose, and together they account for most cases. If the check engine light is flashing, the misfire is severe enough to overheat the catalytic converter, so ease off and get it checked the same day.
Oil leaking under my car: where is it coming from?
Dark brown or black drips under the front half of the car are almost always engine oil, and the most common sources are a loose drain plug or filter, a hardened valve cover gasket, or a leaking oil pan gasket. A few drops a day is a slow seep you can plan around, while a puddle the size of a dinner plate overnight needs attention this week. The key is to keep the dipstick above the low mark while you get it fixed.
Signs your alternator is failing, and how to confirm it before you pay
The clearest signs of a failing alternator are a battery or charging light while driving, lights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev, and a battery that keeps going flat even when it tests good. A meter on the battery with the engine running should read roughly 13.5 to 14.7 volts. Much lower, or above about 15, means the charging system needs attention.
How long does a car battery last in Florida heat?
In South Florida, plan on about two to four years from a typical car battery, compared with five or more in northern states. Heat speeds up the chemical corrosion inside the battery and boils off its water, so the damage builds all summer and often shows up as a sudden no-start in the fall. Testing it every year after year two is the cheapest protection.
Should I take my car to the dealer or an independent shop?
Use the dealer for anything the factory pays for, meaning warranty repairs and safety recalls, and for some software or programming jobs. For routine maintenance and most out-of-warranty repairs, a good independent shop usually charges noticeably less per hour, and federal law says using one does not void your warranty.
