A Kia built since about 2020 is one of the least expensive cars to maintain in Boca Raton. Older Optima, Sorento, Sportage, Forte and Soul models need a VIN check first, since engine recalls, the knock sensor software and theft protection all decide what Kia will pay for.
Kia scores well on running costs. RepairPal ranks the brand third of 32 with a 4.0 out of 5 rating, average yearly repair and maintenance spending near $474 compared with $652 across the industry, and about 0.2 unscheduled repair visits per year. New-car coverage is 5 years or 60,000 miles bumper to bumper and 10 years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain for the first owner. Buy one used and the powertrain term shrinks to the 5-year or 60,000-mile limit.
Most Kia trouble from the last 15 years traces to the engines it shared with Hyundai. In March 2017 Kia recalled 2011-2014 Optima, 2012-2014 Sorento and 2011-2013 Sportage under 17V-224, saying machining errors at the factory could cause early bearing wear. In November 2020 NHTSA and Kia signed a consent order with a $70 million civil penalty tied to the timing and accuracy of Kia's engine recalls. Settlement programs later extended engine coverage across much of the lineup, and each one hinges on Kia's Knock Sensor Detection System software, a free update that watches for the vibration of a failing bearing and limits engine power when it hears it.
Since 2020, the main stories are different: theft of turn-key cars, a power seat fire recall on the Telluride, and piston ring recalls on the small 2.0-liter engine in the Soul and Seltos.
Popular Kia models in South Florida
- Telluride (2020+): The most sought-after Kia in the area, with a 3.8-liter V6 and an 8-speed automatic. 2020-2024 models are in a front power seat motor fire recall that was reissued in 2026, plus a driveshaft roll-away recall.
- Sorento (2011-2015, 2016-2020, 2021+): 2012-2019 versions with the 2.4 GDI or 2.0 turbo sit inside the lifetime engine program. 2011-2013 cars with the 2.4 MPI belong to the second engine settlement. 2021 and later use newer Smartstream engines.
- Sportage (2011-2016, 2017-2022, 2023+): Turn-key versions through 2022 are theft targets. 2011-2019 GDI and turbo engines carry lifetime short-block coverage once the knock software is done.
- Optima (2011-2020) and K5 (2021+): The Optima was Kia's Theta II sedan; 2011-2019 GDI cars have lifetime coverage and the hybrids sit in the second settlement. The K5 replaced it, and turn-key 2021-2022 K5s qualify for the theft software.
- Forte (2010-2013, 2014-2018, 2019+): A common first car and rideshare car. 2014-2018 Fortes with the 2.0 Nu GDI and 2010-2013 cars with the 2.4 are in the Engine II program; 2012-2015 cars were in a fire inspection recall.
- Soul (2010-2013, 2014-2019, 2020+): Boxy and practical. 2012-2016 1.6 GDI cars had a catalytic converter overheating recall that could wreck pistons, and 2020-2023 2.0 cars had piston oil ring recalls.
- Carnival (2022+) and Sedona (through 2021): The minivans. Turn-key Sedonas through 2021 are in the theft program. Carnivals use a 3.5-liter V6 and have a cleaner record so far.
Known Kia problems to watch for
Theta II GDI bearing wear and lifetime short-block coverage
Debris from machining could block oil flow to the connecting rod bearings. Owners hear a ticking that becomes a deep knock, then the engine stalls or locks up. Under the 2019 settlement Kia covers the short block for life, for first and later owners, provided the knock sensor software is installed. A replacement engine is the normal remedy, and a car that already had one should have the 18V-907 fuel pipe recall checked too.
Guide: What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?Second engine settlement: 2.4 MPI, 2.0 Nu GDI and 1.6 Gamma GDI
These engines can suffer the same rod bearing failure. Kia's version of the Engine II settlement extends warranty coverage for that failure on listed vehicles, with the knock sensor update as a condition. Warning signs include a check engine light, a new knocking sound and a sudden loss of power. If Kia denies a claim under the settlement, BBB National Programs runs free arbitration for class members.
Guide: Check engine light flashing: should I stop driving?Soul catalytic converter overheating and piston damage
On the older Soul, very hot exhaust could melt the converter, which caused abnormal combustion and broken pistons or rods. Dealers update the engine computer, replace a damaged converter and replace the engine if needed, all free. On the newer 2.0 cars, piston oil rings may have been made or heat-treated wrong, leading to oil burning and engine damage.
Guide: Blue smoke from the exhaust: is my car burning oil?Engine bay fire recalls
The first recall has dealers inspect for fuel and oil leaks, test the engine, install the knock software and replace the engine if needed. The second covers the anti-lock brake hydraulic unit, which can short and burn while parked; Kia tells owners to park outdoors away from buildings until a new fuse is fitted.
Guide: ABS light on: is it safe to drive, and what causes it?Turn-key Kias and the theft software
Without an immobilizer, these cars can be started with a USB connector after the steering column is cracked open. Kia began a free software rollout in 2023 that keeps the engine from starting once the car is locked with the remote, and lengthens the alarm. A class settlement given final approval in 2024 pays for certain theft losses and up to $300 toward anti-theft devices for cars that cannot take the update.
Telluride seat motor fire and roll-away recalls
A stuck power seat slide knob can keep the seat motor running until it overheats and starts a fire. The first fix did not always work, so in 2026 Kia replaced it with a new recall that adds an electronic fuse, and cars already repaired need the new remedy. Until then Kia says to park outside. Separately, the right front driveshaft may not be fully engaged, which can let the SUV roll in Park.
Maintenance schedule highlights
| Every 7,500 miles or 12 months, or about half that under severe use | Oil and filter with the grade on the cap. Kia's severe list covers short trips, heavy traffic and idling, which is daily life in Boca. Keep receipts: engine claims under the settlements can be reviewed for missed changes. |
| Every 7,500 miles | Rotate tires and inspect brakes, suspension, exhaust and the 12-volt battery. |
| Every 15,000 miles | Cabin air filter. Kia A/C systems run almost year-round here, and a clogged filter cuts airflow and holds moisture. |
| Every 30,000 miles | Engine air filter, brake fluid inspection, and drive belt check. Replace brake fluid when it tests wet; in humid air that is often every two to three years. |
| Around 60,000 miles | A transmission fluid drain-and-fill on automatics and IVT units if the car sees heavy stop-and-go, even where the normal schedule says inspect only. Use Kia's specified fluid. |
| 45,000-105,000 miles | Spark plugs, with turbo engines on the shorter end. Long-life coolant first change is around 10 years or 120,000 miles. |
Always confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact model and year.

Dealer or independent shop?
For any knock, oil light or loss of power on a pre-2022 Kia, start with a dealer. Only Kia dealers can perform recall work, install the knock sensor software and submit claims under the settlement coverage, and an independent teardown before Kia inspects the engine can complicate that claim. Ask the service advisor to print the VIN's open campaigns while you wait.
Outside of engine and recall work, local independents are usually the better deal for brakes, A/C, steering and suspension. Typical Palm Beach County rates are around $130-$180 an hour at independents and about $180-$240 at dealer service departments. Using an independent for oil changes does not void coverage, but you must be able to prove each service with dated receipts showing mileage and oil type.
Newer Kias need factory-level scan tools for some battery, brake and driver-assist calibrations. Before an independent replaces a windshield or does a brake job on a 2020 or later model, confirm it can handle the camera and electronic parking brake procedures.
Owning a Kia in South Florida
Engines with rod bearing worries do not like a Florida summer. Long idles in school pickup lines in Parkland or Coconut Creek, with the A/C on full and the cooling fans cycling, age the oil by hours rather than by miles. Change it at six months even if the odometer says you have more left, and listen on cold mornings for any new ticking.
Several Kia recalls, including the brake unit fire and the Telluride seat fire, tell owners to park outside until repaired. That clashes with hurricane season, when people move cars into garages or parking structures. If your car has one of these open, book the repair in spring, before storms start lining up in the Atlantic.
A Sportage or Soul that sits for months while its owner is up north drains its battery and, if it is a turn-key model, sits as an easy target. Have the theft software installed before leaving, use a battery maintainer, and leave a steering wheel lock on.

Kia FAQ
How do I know if my Kia engine is covered?
Run your VIN through Kia's owner site or ask any Kia dealer, who can see every engine program tied to the car. Coverage depends on the exact engine, so two Sorentos of the same year can differ. The knock sensor software must be on the car for most of the coverage.
Does the Kia theft update make my car safe?
It stops the specific USB-cable method once the car is locked with the remote, and the alarm runs longer. It does not stop a smashed window or a damaged column, so a steering wheel lock is still worth using in busy lots.
My Telluride already had the seat recall. Do I need to go back?
Yes. The 2026 recall replaced the earlier one because some repairs were not effective, and Kia says cars fixed under the first recall need the new electronic fuse too. Park it outside until that is done.
Is a used Kia Optima or Sorento a good buy?
It can be, with proof that the knock sensor software and any engine recall are complete. Get a pre-purchase inspection, and remember that a second owner's powertrain warranty is only 5 years or 60,000 miles from the original sale.
