Engine failure is the Sorento's defining problem, worst on 2014-2016 models with the 2.4L four. 2012-2019 Sorentos with the 2.4L or 2.0L turbo direct-injection engines get lifetime short-block coverage once the knock sensor software is installed, and 2011-2013 cars with the 2.4L port-injected engine have their own settlement. Key-ignition 2011-2022 models qualify for the free theft update.
The Sorento is Kia's midsize SUV, and in Boca it is everywhere: three-row family haulers in Parkland school lines, second cars at Boca West, and plenty of high-mileage examples on used lots along Federal Highway. Three generations matter: the XM for 2011-2015, the UM for 2016-2020 and the MQ4 from 2021.
RepairPal gives the Sorento 4.0 out of 5, with average repair spending of about $533 a year, close to its class average and below the $652 figure for all vehicles, and an 11 percent chance that a given repair is severe. Those averages hide a very uneven picture. Most Sorentos are cheap to keep, and a minority suffer engine failure that costs as much as the car is worth.
That is why the engine under the hood, and its paperwork, matters more than trim or mileage. Two Sorentos of the same year can have different engines and different coverage. A Kia dealer can pull up every engine program and recall tied to a VIN in a few minutes.
Kia Sorento generations
Fourth generation (MQ4)
2021-presentNo V6 any more. The non-turbo 2.5 uses an eight-speed automatic, and turbo models use an eight-speed dual-clutch. Facelifted for 2024. Not part of the older engine settlements, and push-button cars have immobilizers.
Third generation (UM)
2016-2020Six-speed automatic at launch. For 2019 the 2.0 turbo was dropped. 2016-2019 four-cylinder cars sit inside the lifetime direct-injection engine program.
Second generation (XM)
2011-2015Refreshed for 2014. Look at the engine cover or ask a dealer to decode the VIN to tell the 2.4 MPI from the 2.4 GDI, because the two fall under different engine settlements.
Known Kia Sorento problems by year
2.4L and 2.0L turbo GDI connecting rod bearing failure
Machining debris can starve the rod bearings of oil. CarComplaints' top Sorento complaints are all engine failures: 2016 at about $7,300 and 94,000 miles, 2015 at $6,800 and 86,000 miles, 2014 at $8,900 and 75,000 miles. The lifetime warranty from the class settlement covers short-block repairs for original and later owners, but only once the Knock Sensor Detection System software is on the car.
Guide: What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?2.4L MPI engine settlement
These earlier engines are not in the lifetime program but are listed in the later Kia engine class settlement, which extends warranty coverage for the same type of failure. If Kia turns down a claim, BBB National Programs runs a free arbitration process for class members.
Guide: Check engine light flashing: should I stop driving?Engine compartment fires
Three separate fire campaigns touch the Sorento. The first covers engines that may leak oil or fuel onto hot parts. The second covers the anti-lock brake control unit, which can short even with the SUV parked. The third covers the trailer hitch wiring module, where moisture and debris can short the circuit board. The last two came with advice to park outside until repaired.
Guide: Why does my car smell like something is burning?Fuel pipe leaks after an engine replacement
Recall 18V-907 exists because the high-pressure fuel pipe can be damaged, misaligned or under-torqued when a technician swaps the engine. A fuel smell under the hood after engine work is a warning sign. If you are buying a Sorento that already had a new engine, make sure this inspection was done too.
3.3L V6 crankshaft heat treatment
Recall 17V-586 covers V6 engines whose crankshafts may not have been heat-treated correctly and could fail, stalling the engine. Dealers inspect and replace the engine sub-assembly where needed. It is a separate problem from the four-cylinder bearing issue and has its own campaign.
Guide: What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?Theft of key-ignition models
Sorentos started with a key, rather than a push button, lack an engine immobilizer and became targets of a widely shared theft method. Kia's free software update stops the engine from starting after the SUV is locked with the fob, and the theft class settlement pays for certain losses and anti-theft devices on cars that cannot take the update.
Notable recalls
- 17V-224 (2012-2014 Sorento): Machining errors in engine production can cause premature bearing wear and seizure. Dealers inspect and replace the engine as needed.
- 20V-750 (2012-2013 Sorento): Engine compartment fire risk. Dealers check for fuel and oil leaks, test the engine, replace it if needed and install the knock sensor software.
- 23V-652 (2011-2014 Sorento): The ABS hydraulic electronic control unit can short and catch fire, parked or driving. Dealers fit a new fuse; park outside until done.
- 22V-703 (2016-2022 Sorento, 2021-2022 Sorento Hybrid, 2022-2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid): The tow hitch harness module can short from moisture and debris and start a fire. Dealers replace the fuse or module.
- 22V-760 (2021-2022 Sorento): A transmission oil pump fault can defeat the limp-home mode and cause a loss of drive power. Dealers inspect, update software and replace the transmission if needed.
- 25V-649 (2021-2023 Sorento): The HVAC blower motor wiring harness may be undersized and can overheat. Dealers replace the harness and blower motor resistor.
Recall repairs are free at any franchised Kia dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since this list is not complete.
Maintenance that matters
| Every 3,750-5,000 miles or 6 months for Boca driving | Oil and filter. Short trips and A/C idling count as severe service. Keep every receipt with date, mileage and oil grade, because engine claims can ask for them. |
| Every oil change | Check the oil level on the dipstick. A GDI four that suddenly needs a quart between changes deserves a dealer visit while it is still covered. |
| Every 15,000 miles | Cabin air filter, and a look at the tow hitch wiring if the SUV has a factory trailer harness. |
| Every 30,000 miles | Engine air filter, brake fluid test, and drive belt inspection. On 2021 and later models, ask the dealer to check for open campaigns and software updates at each visit. |
| About 60,000 miles | Automatic transmission fluid change if the SUV does mostly city driving, and spark plugs at the interval your owner's manual gives for your engine. |
Confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact year and engine.

Buying a used Kia Sorento
- The most worry-free used Sorentos are 2021 and later models, which use newer engines outside the old settlements. Run the VIN anyway for the transmission oil pump, blower harness and tow hitch campaigns.
- If you shop 2012-2019, focus on paperwork. You want proof the knock sensor update was installed, any engine recall was done, and that oil changes were on time. A car with a dealer-replaced engine and the 18V-907 inspection closed can be a good buy.
- Approach 2014-2016 four-cylinder Sorentos with the most caution; they lead CarComplaints for engine failure. A 2016-2020 V6 avoids the four-cylinder bearing issue, though 2017 V6s need 17V-586 closed.
- On a 2011-2022 key-start car, ask if the theft software was installed and whether the steering column has ever been repaired. Insurance premiums for these models can be higher, so get a quote before buying.
The Florida factor
Sorento engines fail on bearings, and bearings depend on oil that is clean and the right thickness. Twenty minutes of idling in a Parkland pickup line with the A/C on high, repeated every weekday, is exactly the severe service Kia's schedule describes. Use the shorter interval and keep the oil changes documented.
Two of the Sorento's fire recalls tell owners to park outside until repaired, which is hard to follow in June through November when you want the SUV in the garage for a storm. If your VIN has an open ABS or tow hitch campaign, schedule it during the dry season so it is closed before hurricane warnings start.
Seasonal residents who leave a turn-key Sorento in a Deerfield or Boynton condo lot for months leave an easy theft target with a slowly dying battery. Get the theft update and a steering wheel lock, and connect a battery maintainer if there is an outlet.

Kia Sorento FAQ
Does my Sorento have the lifetime engine warranty?
It applies to 2012-2019 Sorentos with the 2.0L or 2.4L gasoline direct-injection engine, for original and later owners, once the knock sensor software is installed. A Kia dealer can confirm it from the VIN.
What are the warning signs of Sorento engine failure?
A light tick that grows into a deep knock, the oil light flickering at idle, a flashing check engine light or the engine going into reduced power. Stop driving and call a Kia dealer before an independent shop opens the engine.
Is the V6 Sorento more reliable?
The 3.3L V6 is a different engine family and is not part of the four-cylinder bearing programs, but 2017 V6s have their own crankshaft recall. Expect a couple of miles per gallon less than the four.
Which Sorentos need the theft software?
Key-ignition 2011-2022 Sorentos. Push-button start models already have an immobilizer and do not need it.
