Hyundai Owner's Guide: Problems, Costs and Repair in Boca Raton

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

Hyundais are cheap to keep on the road, but if yours is a 2010-2021 model, check two things by VIN before anything else. Engine recalls and the free knock sensor software decide whether the extended engine warranty applies, and turn-key 2011-2022 cars should have the free anti-theft upgrade.

On repair cost, Hyundai is one of the better brands to own. RepairPal rates it 4.0 out of 5 and fourth of 32 brands, with average annual repair and maintenance spending of about $468 against $652 for all brands and a 10 percent chance that a given repair is severe. The original buyer gets a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, but a second owner gets far less.

The big asterisk is the engine family Hyundai used from about 2010 to 2021. The 2.0-liter turbo and 2.4-liter Theta II direct-injection engines had machining debris left in the crankshaft area, which starved the connecting rod bearings of oil. The result was knocking, seizure and in some cases fire. Hyundai recalled 2011-2012 Sonatas under 15V-568 and 2013-2014 Sonatas and Santa Fe Sports under 17V-226. In November 2020 NHTSA signed a consent order with Hyundai carrying a $140 million civil penalty over how slowly and inaccurately those recalls were handled.

Two class-action settlements followed. The first gave covered Theta II GDI engines a lifetime short-block warranty. The second, often called Engine II, gave the 2.4 MPI, the 2.0 Nu GDI and the 1.6 Gamma GDI a 15-year or 150,000-mile extension. Both depend on the Knock Sensor Detection System, a free software update that listens for bearing knock and puts the engine into a protective mode.

Popular Hyundai models in South Florida

  • Sonata (2011-2014, 2015-2019, 2020+): The center of the Theta II story. 2011-2019 cars with the 2.4 or 2.0T are in the lifetime short-block program once the knock sensor software is done. 2021-2022 cars with the 2.5 turbo had a high-pressure fuel pipe leak recall, 21V-524.
  • Elantra (2011-2016, 2017-2020, 2021+): Huge numbers on local roads. 2014-2016 sedans with the 2.0 Nu GDI fall under the Engine II extension, and 2011-2015 cars are in ABS fuse recall 23V-651.
  • Tucson (2010-2015, 2016-2021, 2022+): 2010-2013 with the 2.4 MPI and 2014-2021 with the 2.0 Nu GDI are Engine II vehicles. 2016-2021 models are in ABS unit fire recall 20V-543.
  • Santa Fe Sport (2013-2018) and Santa Fe (2019+): The two-row Santa Fe Sport used the 2.4 GDI and 2.0T, recalled for 2013-2014 and covered by the lifetime warranty through 2018. 2021-2022 2.5T models had fuel pipe and transmission recalls.
  • Palisade (2020+): Three-row family SUV with a 3.8-liter V6, outside the engine settlements. Recalls cover tow hitch harness shorts, seat belt buckles and third-row curtain airbags on 2020-2025 models.
  • Kona (2018+): Small crossover popular for city driving. Turn-key 2018-2022 versions are eligible for the anti-theft software.
  • Ioniq 5 (2022+): The most common Hyundai EV here. 2022-2024 cars are in charging control unit recalls, and certain 2023-2024 cars were added to a 2026 battery cell fire recall.

Known Hyundai problems to watch for

Theta II GDI connecting rod bearing failure

2011-2019 Sonata, 2013-2018 Santa Fe Sport, 2019 Santa Fe, and 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019 Tucson with the 2.0T or 2.4 GDI. Recalls 15V-568 and 17V-226 cover the earliest years

Expect a light knock at idle that turns into rhythmic hammering under load, then oil pressure warnings and a stall. The settlement covers the short block, meaning block, crankshaft, rods and pistons, for original and later owners when the failure traces to rod bearings and the knock sensor software was installed. The fix is a replacement engine. Do not drive on a knock; a thrown rod can breach the block and spray oil onto the exhaust.

Guide: What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?

Engine II settlement: 2.4 MPI, 2.0 Nu GDI and 1.6 Gamma GDI

2011-2019 Sonata Hybrid and Plug-In, 2010-2012 Santa Fe, 2010-2013 and 2014-2021 Tucson, 2014 Elantra Coupe, 2014-2016 Elantra, 2014-2020 Elantra GT, 2012-2017 Veloster

Hyundai's dealer bulletin extends coverage for damage from rod bearing wear to 15 years or 150,000 miles from first delivery, for original and later owners. Typical signs are code P1326, abnormal engine noise or a no-crank. The knock sensor campaign, 966 or 982, is generally required, and salvage-title and dealer-owned cars are excluded.

Turn-key models easy to steal

Key-ignition versions of 2011-2022 Elantra and Tucson, 2013-2022 Santa Fe, 2013-2018 Santa Fe Sport, 2011-2019 Sonata, 2018-2022 Accent and Kona, 2020-2021 Palisade and Venue, and 2012-2017 and 2019-2021 Veloster

Cars without an engine immobilizer can be started with a USB plug once the column cover is broken. From February 2023 Hyundai offered free software that doubles the alarm from 30 to 60 seconds and blocks starting after the car is locked with the fob, so always lock with the fob. Cars that cannot take it get a free steering wheel lock, and a class settlement approved in 2024 reimburses certain theft losses.

ABS module that can short and catch fire

Recall 23V-651: 2011-2015 Elantra and Sonata Hybrid, 2012-2015 Accent, Azera and Veloster, 2013-2015 Santa Fe, 2010-2013 Tucson, 2013 Santa Fe Sport and others. Recall 20V-543: 2016-2021 Tucson

Brake fluid can leak inside the anti-lock brake module and short its circuit board, starting an engine bay fire while driving or parked. Hyundai advises parking outside and away from buildings until the free repair, a new ABS fuse on 23V-651, is done.

Fuel leaks on GDI and turbo engines

2013-2014 Sonata low-pressure hose (20V-121, 22V-312); 2011-2014 Sonata and 2013-2014 Santa Fe Sport after an engine replacement (18V-934); 2021-2022 Santa Fe and Sonata 2.5T (21V-524)

Engine heat can crack the rubber hose feeding the direct-injection pump, some replacement engines went in with a misaligned high-pressure fuel pipe, and on the 2.5 turbo the pump-to-rail joint could leak. A raw fuel smell under the hood means stop and inspect. All are free recall repairs.

Ioniq 5 charging unit and battery recalls

2022-2024 Ioniq 5 (24V-204, expanded by 24V-868); certain 2023-2024 Ioniq 5 (26V-432)

The integrated charging control unit can fail and stop charging the 12-volt battery, which can end in a loss of drive power. The remedy is a software update and a new unit if it is damaged. The 2026 recall covers high-voltage cells with misaligned electrodes that can cause a fire.

Maintenance schedule highlights

Every 3,750-5,000 miles or 6 months (severe), 7,500 miles or 12 months (normal)Engine oil and filter. Short trips, stop-and-go and long idles with the A/C on put most Boca drivers on the severe side. On any 2010-2021 GDI engine, keep every receipt with date, mileage and oil spec, because engine claims can be reviewed for neglect.
Every 7,500 milesTire rotation, brake check, battery test, and a look at belts and hoses for heat cracking.
Every 15,000 miles or yearlyCabin air filter. In humid months a damp, musty filter is the usual source of A/C odor.
Every 30,000 milesEngine air filter, brake fluid check, and an automatic transmission fluid drain-and-fill under severe use. Hyundai lists no routine change on the normal schedule.
45,000-105,000 milesSpark plugs. Turbo engines at the short end, naturally aspirated engines at the long end; your manual has the figure.
About 10 years or 120,000 milesFirst change of Hyundai long-life coolant, then on the shorter repeat interval in the manual. On the Ioniq 5, battery coolant and reduction gear oil follow their own schedule.

Always confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact model and year.

Dealer or independent shop?

Anything engine-related on a 2010-2021 Hyundai should start at a dealer. Recalls, the knock sensor software and the settlement warranties are only paid through Hyundai's warranty system, and Hyundai's own dealer guidance says to submit a prior approval request on every eligible engine within the extended period. If you take a knocking car to an independent shop first and it tears the engine down, you can make your claim harder to prove.

Routine work is a different story. Federal law lets you service the car anywhere without voiding the warranty, as long as the work is done to spec and documented. If Hyundai suspects neglect it must tell you and give you up to 10 business days to produce oil change records, so a folder of independent-shop receipts is as good as dealer receipts. Palm Beach County independents usually bill about $130-$180 an hour against roughly $180-$240 at dealers.

For brakes, A/C, suspension, batteries and tires, an independent is usually the better value. On newer models, ask whether the shop runs Hyundai's GDS software for module resets.

Owning a Hyundai in South Florida

Direct-injection engines and Florida idling are a poor mix. A Sonata or Tucson crawling along Glades Road and Federal Highway with the A/C running piles hours onto the oil without many miles, so change oil by the calendar as well as the odometer. If the knock sensor software drops the engine into reduced power with the check engine light on, have it towed to a dealer.

The ABS fire recalls carry a park-outside warning, which is awkward when a hurricane watch has everyone tucking cars into condo garages. Check the recall status before June 1, and if the fix is still pending, ask the dealer to do it ahead of storm season. The same goes for snowbirds: a recalled car that will sit in a closed garage from April to November should have the fix done before you leave.

Turn-key Hyundais remain targets in large mall and beach lots. Lock with the fob every time so the upgraded alarm arms, and keep a steering wheel lock in the car. Ioniq 5 owners should park in shade when they can, since heat ages every battery in the car.

Hyundai FAQ

Is my Hyundai covered by the lifetime engine warranty?

It applies to certain 2011-2019 Sonata, 2013-2018 Santa Fe Sport, 2019 Santa Fe and some Tucson years with Theta II GDI engines, for original and later owners, once the knock sensor software is installed. Other engines may fall under the 15-year or 150,000-mile Engine II extension instead. Hyundai's settlement website and any dealer can check your exact VIN.

What does the Hyundai anti-theft update actually do?

It lengthens the alarm to a full minute and stops the car from starting by the USB-cable method once it has been locked with the key fob. It does not stop window smashing or column damage, so a visible steering wheel lock is still sensible. The update is free at any Hyundai dealer and takes under an hour.

Will an independent shop void my Hyundai warranty?

No. Routine maintenance can be done anywhere if it meets Hyundai's specs and you keep receipts showing date, mileage and the oil used. Warranty and recall repairs themselves must be done by a dealer, and they cost you nothing.

Should I buy a used 2011-2019 Sonata or Santa Fe Sport?

It can be a fair buy with the right paperwork. Ask for proof the knock sensor update and any engine recall were done, run the VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup, listen for a knock on a cold start, and get a pre-purchase inspection. The 10-year powertrain warranty does not transfer in full to a second owner.

Guides for Hyundai owners

What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?
It depends on the sound. A light metallic pinging when you accelerate uphill is usually fuel detonation, often from the wrong octane. A fast tick that follows engine speed is usually the valvetrain. A deep, heavy knock from low in the engine that gets louder with RPM is often a worn connecting rod bearing, and that one means you should shut the engine off and have it towed.
Check engine light flashing: should I stop driving?
Yes, a flashing check engine light means the engine is misfiring badly enough that raw fuel is reaching the exhaust, and you should ease off the throttle and get off the road as soon as it is safe. Keep driving and the catalytic converter can overheat within minutes, which turns a $200 coil or plug repair into a $1,500 or larger bill and, in rare cases, starts an underbody fire.
Oil pressure light came on while driving: what to do right now
Pull over and shut the engine off as soon as it is safe, because a red oil pressure light means the moving parts may no longer be getting enough oil and serious damage can happen in a few minutes. The most common cause is simply very low oil, which you can check on the dipstick after waiting 10 minutes, but if the level is full and the light stays on, have the car towed.
ABS light on: is it safe to drive, and what causes it?
An amber ABS light on its own usually means the anti-lock system has switched itself off after detecting a fault, while your normal brakes still work. The most common cause is a wheel speed sensor or its wiring, a repair that is often under $300. If the red BRAKE light comes on at the same time, or the pedal feels wrong, stop driving and have the car towed.
What should a pre-purchase inspection check on a used car?
A proper pre-purchase inspection puts the car on a lift and checks the engine, transmission, brakes, tires, suspension, frame, A/C and electronics, plus a scan for stored and recently cleared trouble codes. Expect to pay about $100-$250 at an independent shop and more for European or exotic models, which is small next to the repair bills it can expose.
Is an extended car warranty worth it?
For most reliable cars, no: Consumer Reports found 55% of buyers never used their contract, and those who did saved less on average than they paid. One can make sense on a complex luxury or European car you will keep long past the factory warranty, if it is backed by the manufacturer and bought at a negotiated price. In Florida you can cancel within 60 days for a refund of everything you paid, less claims and an admin fee of up to 5%.
Why does my car smell like something is burning?
The exact kind of burning smell tells you a lot: acrid oil usually means a leak dripping onto the hot exhaust, sharp melting plastic points to an electrical short or debris on the exhaust, a hot metallic smell at one wheel is a dragging brake, and burnt rubber is often a slipping belt. Any burning smell with smoke, or a plastic smell from the dash, means pull over and shut the car off now.
How much does a car diagnostic test cost in Boca Raton?
Expect to pay about $100-$200 for a standard one-hour diagnostic at an independent shop in the Boca Raton area, and roughly $160-$275 at a dealer, with European and electrical problems often running higher. A free code read at a parts store is not the same thing: it gives you a code number, while a paid diagnostic is a technician testing parts to find which one actually failed.
