GMC Owner's Guide: Problems, Costs and Repair in Boca Raton

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

GMC builds only trucks and SUVs, and the most expensive problems sit in the V8 and diesel drivetrains: the 6.2L engine recall on 2021-2024 Yukon and Sierra 1500, lifter failures on cylinder-deactivation V8s, and a 10-speed valve recall on 2020-2022 Duramax trucks. Run your VIN before paying for engine or transmission work.

GMC is General Motors' truck and SUV brand. There are no GMC sedans, so every owner in Boca Raton drives something big: a Sierra pickup, a Yukon, an Acadia, a Terrain, a Canyon or a Hummer EV. Denali and AT4 trims are especially popular here, and those trims are more likely to have the 6.2L V8, the Duramax diesel, adaptive suspension and other costly hardware.

RepairPal gives GMC a 3.0 out of 5 reliability rating, ranked 22nd of 32 brands, with about $744 a year in average repair costs versus $652 for all brands. GMC owners visit a shop for unplanned repairs about 0.3 times a year, but 17 percent of repairs rate as severe, which is notably higher than the 12 percent average and reflects the heavier drivetrains.

Because GMC vehicles share platforms with Chevrolet, many recalls cover both brands. That does not mean the advice is the same. A Yukon Denali owner and a Terrain owner face very different risks, and the sections below are organized around what a GMC owner is actually likely to have parked in the driveway.

Popular GMC models in South Florida

  • Yukon and Yukon XL (2015-2020, 2021-present): Denali trims have used the 6.2L V8 for years. On 2021-2024 models with that engine, confirm the L87 recall inspection was done. The 2021 and later generation also offers the 3.0L Duramax diesel.
  • Sierra 1500 (2014-2018, 2019-present): The 5.3L and 6.2L V8s use cylinder deactivation, and lifter complaints are frequent. The 3.0L Duramax from 2020 is in the 10-speed valve recall.
  • Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD (2020-present): Heavy-duty trucks with the 6.6L gas V8 or 6.6L Duramax diesel. 2020-2022 diesel HD trucks are part of the transmission valve recall.
  • Acadia (2017-2023, 2024-present): The 2017-2023 generation is smaller than the original and widely seen around Boca. The best-known complaint is a Shift to Park message that will not clear. The 2024 redesign uses a 2.5L turbo.
  • Terrain (2010-2017, 2018-2024): First-generation Terrains with the 2.4L four-cylinder can burn oil. The 2018 and later 1.5L turbo version is more trouble-free.
  • Canyon (2015-present): Midsize pickup. The 2023 redesign moved to a 2.7L turbo four. Earlier trucks offered a 3.6L V6 and a 2.8L Duramax.
  • Hummer EV (2022-present): Very heavy electric pickup and SUV. Tire and brake costs are high, and repairs are dealer-centric.

Known GMC problems to watch for

6.2L V8 engine recall on Denali-trim trucks and SUVs

Certain 2021-2024 Yukon, Yukon XL and Sierra 1500 with the 6.2L V8 (NHTSA 25V-274, GM N252494000)

Some 6.2L engines left the factory with flawed connecting rods or crankshafts. Failure can be sudden, with knocking, loss of power and a dead engine. GMC dealers inspect each engine and replace it if needed; engines that pass get a higher-viscosity oil, a new oil filter, a revised oil cap and an owner's manual update. If you bought a used Denali from this range, ask for proof the inspection was completed.

Collapsed lifters on 5.3L and 6.2L V8s

Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL with Active or Dynamic Fuel Management, roughly 2014 and later

Cylinder deactivation relies on special lifters that switch off oil pressure to some valves. When one sticks, the first clue is usually a ticking sound at idle, then rough running and a misfire code. Driving on it risks camshaft damage. Repairs range from one bank of lifters to a full top-end with a new cam.

Guide: Why does my engine idle rough or shake at a stop?

10-speed transmission control valve on Duramax diesels

2020-2022 Sierra 1500, 2500HD and 3500HD with diesel engines, 2021 Yukon and Yukon XL diesels (NHTSA 24V-797, follow-up 26V-083)

A faulty control valve in the transmission can lock the rear wheels while driving, which is dangerous at highway speed. The recall installs software that detects the defect, and GM's special coverage pays for the transmission repair when the software flags it. A second campaign rechecks trucks that may have been repaired incorrectly the first time.

Guide: Why is my transmission slipping?

Acadia Shift to Park message

2017-2023 Acadia, also seen on other GM crossovers with the same shifter

The dash says Shift to Park even though the car is in Park, and the vehicle may not shut off fully, which can drain the battery overnight. The cause is usually a worn switch or wiring in the shifter assembly. GM has issued bulletins for the repair. Jiggling the shifter is a temporary workaround, not a fix.

Guide: Why does my car battery keep dying? Finding the real cause

Terrain 2.4L burning oil

2010-2017 Terrain with the 2.4L four-cylinder, mainly 2010-2013

Piston ring problems let the engine consume oil, and many Terrain owners only find out when the oil light flickers in a turn. Low oil also wears the timing chain, which then rattles at startup. GM extended piston ring coverage on many early cars, and lawsuits followed. Check the dipstick at every second fill-up.

Sierra 1500 driveshaft weld and battery cable recalls

2019-2020 Sierra 1500 (NHTSA 20V-650 driveshaft, 19V-888 battery cable)

A poorly welded driveshaft joint can separate while driving, and a battery positive cable with excess glue can cause intermittent power loss or no-start. Both are free recall repairs. A vibration that builds with speed or random electrical cutouts on a 2019-2020 Sierra are reasons to check these first.

Maintenance schedule highlights

When the Oil Life System reaches 0 percent, at least yearlyDexos-certified synthetic oil and filter. For recalled 6.2L engines that passed inspection, use only the heavier grade printed on the new oil cap. Duramax diesels use a diesel-rated oil, not the gas engine spec.
Every 7,500 milesRotate the tires and inspect brakes. Yukon and Sierra Denali 22-inch tires are expensive, so regular rotation pays for itself.
Every 22,500 milesPassenger compartment air filter, and on Duramax diesels, the fuel filter at the interval the manual lists. Change the cabin filter yearly in Florida regardless of miles.
Every 45,000 milesEngine air filter. Automatic transmission fluid and filter on trucks that tow, carry heavy loads or spend long hours in traffic, which is GM's severe-service definition.
Every 97,500 milesSpark plugs on gas V8s and the Terrain and Acadia engines. Inspect plug boots, which harden in hot engine bays.
150,000 miles or 5 yearsDrain and refill the Dex-Cool coolant, whichever comes first. Diesel trucks also need regular DEF top-offs.

Always confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact model and year.

Typical GMC repair costs

JobTypical cost
Synthetic oil change, V8 Sierra or Yukon$80-$130
Lifter and camshaft repair, 6.2L Denali$3,500-$6,000
Shifter assembly repair for Shift to Park message, Acadia$300-$700
Front brake pads and rotors, Yukon or Sierra$400-$700 independent, $550-$950 dealer
Magnetic Ride or adaptive shock, per corner, Denali$700-$1,300
A/C compressor, Yukon or Sierra$1,200-$2,000
Terrain 2.4L timing chain replacement$1,400-$2,200
Duramax fuel filter replacement$120-$220
Diagnostic scan and inspection$100-$190

Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.

Dealer or independent shop?

Recall and special coverage work on a GMC must be done at a GMC or Buick-GMC dealer. For the 6.2L engine inspection and the diesel 10-speed campaign, that is the only route to a free repair, so do not let anyone tear into an engine or transmission until the VIN has been checked.

For routine service, brakes and most repairs on a Sierra, Yukon or Acadia, a capable independent shop is usually cheaper, and parts are widely shared with Chevrolet so there is no shortage. Denali-specific hardware such as Magnetic Ride shocks, air suspension on some Yukon trims and adaptive cruise sensors can need dealer-level programming, so ask the shop up front whether it can complete that step.

Diesel work is a specialty of its own. Choose a shop that has a current GM scan tool and can perform DEF and regeneration procedures, or use the dealer.

Owning a GMC in South Florida

A Yukon Denali parked in the open at a Boca Town Center lot on a July afternoon can see cabin temperatures past 140 degrees. The A/C then runs at full load for the drive home on Glades Road, which strains the compressor and the electric cooling fans. A sunshade and cracking the windows for the first minute help more than people expect.

Sierra pickups that launch boats at local ramps or live east of the Intracoastal see salt on the frame, brake lines and the exposed steel of the trailer hitch. Rinse the underside after salt exposure and ask for a brake line inspection once a year, especially on trucks older than five years.

If a GMC is going to sit while you are away for the summer, Acadia owners in particular should have the Shift to Park problem fixed first. A vehicle that never fully powers down will drain its battery in a few days, and a dead battery in a closed garage during hurricane season can mean you cannot move the car when you need to.

GMC FAQ

Is my Yukon Denali part of the 6.2L engine recall?

Certain 2021-2024 Yukon, Yukon XL and Sierra 1500 models with the 6.2L V8 are included. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or call GMC at 1-800-462-8782. The inspection and any engine replacement are free.

What causes a ticking noise on my Sierra 5.3L?

A failing cylinder-deactivation lifter is the most common cause on these engines, though an exhaust manifold leak can sound similar. A shop can tell the two apart with a stethoscope and misfire data. Do not ignore a tick that gets louder or brings a check engine light.

How do I fix the Shift to Park message on my Acadia?

The lasting fix is repairing or replacing the shifter switch or its wiring. Ask the shop to check GM bulletins for your VIN, since the procedure and parts have been updated.

Are GMC and Chevrolet parts the same?

Mechanically, many are. The Sierra and Silverado, Yukon and Tahoe share engines, transmissions and many chassis parts. Trim, lighting and some Denali electronics are GMC-specific.

Does a diesel GMC need special maintenance in Florida?

Keep DEF topped up, change the fuel filter on schedule, and let the truck do highway runs so the particulate filter can regenerate. Short trips around town can clog it.

Guides for GMC owners

What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?
It depends on the sound. A light metallic pinging when you accelerate uphill is usually fuel detonation, often from the wrong octane. A fast tick that follows engine speed is usually the valvetrain. A deep, heavy knock from low in the engine that gets louder with RPM is often a worn connecting rod bearing, and that one means you should shut the engine off and have it towed.
Why does my engine idle rough or shake at a stop?
A rough, shaky idle almost always means one or more cylinders are not firing cleanly. The three usual suspects are worn spark plugs, a failing ignition coil and an air leak in a vacuum hose, and together they account for most cases. If the check engine light is flashing, the misfire is severe enough to overheat the catalytic converter, so ease off and get it checked the same day.
Why is my transmission slipping?
A slipping transmission is usually low or burnt fluid, worn internal clutches, or an electronic fault such as a bad shift solenoid. If the engine revs up but the car does not accelerate to match, check the fluid level and condition first, then get the trouble codes read before the slip wears the clutches further.
Why does my car battery keep dying? Finding the real cause
A battery that keeps going flat has one of three problems: it is worn out and cannot hold a charge, something is drawing power while the car is off, or the alternator is not refilling it while you drive. A free battery and charging test rules out the first and third, and a parasitic draw test with a meter finds the second.
Does salt air near the beach rust your car, and how do you stop it?
Yes. Salt carried on ocean air settles on the car, absorbs moisture from Florida humidity and speeds up corrosion wherever bare metal is exposed. Regular fresh-water rinses including the underside, sealing stone chips quickly and keeping drain holes clear prevent most of it. Catching a rust bubble early costs a few hundred dollars, while letting it spread can mean $1,000 or more per panel.
What maintenance does my car need at 30k, 60k and 100k miles?
Most modern cars need an oil and filter change every 5,000-10,000 miles, filters and brake fluid around 30,000, spark plugs and some fluids between 60,000 and 100,000, and a timing belt only if the engine has one. Your owner's manual is the authority, and in South Florida the severe-service column usually fits better than the normal one.
Check engine light flashing: should I stop driving?
Yes, a flashing check engine light means the engine is misfiring badly enough that raw fuel is reaching the exhaust, and you should ease off the throttle and get off the road as soon as it is safe. Keep driving and the catalytic converter can overheat within minutes, which turns a $200 coil or plug repair into a $1,500 or larger bill and, in rare cases, starts an underbody fire.
Why does my brake pedal feel soft or spongy?
A soft or spongy brake pedal means the hydraulic system is not transmitting your foot pressure cleanly, usually because of air or moisture in the fluid, a leak, or a master cylinder that is bypassing internally. Treat it as a stop-driving problem: have it towed or driven a very short distance at low speed to a brake shop. A pedal that slowly sinks while you hold it at a light is the most urgent version.
