Genesis Owner's Guide: Problems, Costs and Repair in Boca Raton

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

Genesis cars are generally solid, but the turbo engines have had several fuel pump, turbo oil line and fuel pipe recalls, and the electric models share Hyundai's ICCU charging recall. Run every VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup before you pay for a repair, because a surprising number of Genesis faults are fixed free under a campaign.

Genesis became a separate luxury brand for the 2017 model year, when the Hyundai Genesis sedan was renamed the G80 and the G90 flagship arrived. The G70 sport sedan followed for 2019, then the GV80 SUV for 2021, the GV70 for 2022 and the electric GV60 for 2023. Around Boca Raton you mostly see GV70 and GV80 SUVs, with G80 and G70 sedans close behind.

Mechanically, Genesis shares a lot with Hyundai and Kia: the 2.0T, 2.5T, 3.3T and 3.5T engines, the 8-speed automatic, and the E-GMP electric platform. That shared hardware is good news for parts availability and for independent shops, because the diagnostic procedures and scan-tool coverage are well established.

New Genesis buyers get a 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and, on 2017 and newer models, complimentary scheduled maintenance for 3 years or 36,000 miles with valet pickup through the retailer. Under Hyundai-group terms the long powertrain coverage is aimed at the original owner, so a used-car buyer should read the warranty booklet before assuming the engine is still covered.

Popular Genesis models in South Florida

  • GV80 (2021-present): The best-selling large Genesis SUV locally. Early cars use the 2.5T four-cylinder or 3.5T V6. Covered by the 2021-2023 fuel pump recalls and the 2020-2023 seat belt pretensioner recall, so check both before buying used.
  • GV70 (2022-present): Compact SUV with 2.5T or 3.5T engines and an Electrified GV70 from 2023. The gas versions are in the 2022-2023 fuel pump recall; the electric version is in the ICCU charging recall.
  • G80 (2017-2020, 2021-present): The 2017-2020 car is the older rear-drive sedan with a 3.8L V6, 3.3T or 5.0L V8. The 2021 redesign moved to 2.5T and 3.5T engines. ABS module and starter solenoid fire recalls cover the older generation.
  • G70 (2019-present): Sport sedan with a 2.0T or 2.5T four-cylinder or the 3.3T V6. Watch the 2019-2021 ABS module recall, the 3.3T turbo oil feed pipe recall and the 2019-2023 fuel pump recall.
  • G90 (2017-present): Flagship sedan, less common on the road but popular with older Boca owners. Earlier cars share the 3.3T turbo oil pipe recall; 2023 and later cars use the 3.5T with a mild hybrid system on some trims.
  • GV60 (2023-present): Small electric crossover on the same platform as the Ioniq 5. Charging-unit (ICCU) and rear driveshaft recalls apply to many early cars.

Known Genesis problems to watch for

High-pressure and low-pressure fuel pump failures

2021-2023 G80, GV80, GV70 and 2022-2023 G90 (NHTSA 23V-630 and 24V-282); 2019-2023 G70 (24V-528)

A failing pump can cause hesitation, a check engine light and, in the worst case, a sudden loss of drive power at speed. The recalls replace the pump or update software free of charge. If your car stumbles under load or will not restart after a hot stop, do not wait for a letter: run the VIN and call the retailer.

Guide: Check engine light on but the car drives fine: what does it mean?

3.3T left turbo oil feed pipe leak

2018-2020 G80, 2017-2022 G90 and 2019-2022 G70 with the 3.3L twin-turbo V6 (NHTSA 24V-191, replacing 19V-538)

The feed pipe to the left turbocharger can deteriorate and drip oil onto hot exhaust parts, which is a fire risk. Signs are a burning oil smell after a drive, light smoke from under the hood, or oil spots under the front of the car. The recall replaces the pipe for free.

ABS module short circuit

2017-2020 G80 and 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis (NHTSA 21V-160); 2019-2021 G70 (21V-161)

An internal short in the anti-lock brake module can start an engine bay fire even with the car parked. NHTSA's notice told owners to park outside and away from buildings until the fix, which is a replacement ABS fuse, was done. An ABS light that comes on and stays on is worth a recall check before any brake work.

Guide: ABS light on: is it safe to drive, and what causes it?

Starter solenoid water intrusion

2017-2019 G80, G90 and 2019 G70, plus 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis (NHTSA 24V-107)

Water can get into the starter solenoid and short it, again with a fire risk while parked. Dealers add a relay kit in the engine junction box. A slow or intermittent crank after heavy rain is a reason to check this campaign first.

Front seat belt pretensioner can rupture

2020-2023 GV80, 2021-2023 G80, 2022-2023 GV70 and 2023 GV60 (NHTSA 23V-094)

In a crash the pretensioner can explode and throw metal fragments into the cabin. Nothing warns you ahead of time, so this one is purely a VIN check. The repair is free and takes about an hour at the retailer.

ICCU failure on electric models

2023-2025 GV60, 2023-2025 Electrified GV70 and 2023-2024 Electrified G80 (NHTSA 24V-868, replacing 24V-204)

The integrated charging control unit converts high-voltage battery power to keep the 12-volt battery charged. When it fails, you may see a warning, lose the ability to charge, and eventually lose drive power. The current remedy inspects and replaces the ICCU and its fuse as needed, even on cars that got the earlier software fix.

Carbon buildup on direct-injection turbo engines

2.0T, 2.5T, 3.3T and 3.5T engines, mostly past 60,000 miles

Direct injection sprays fuel straight into the cylinder, so nothing washes the intake valves and carbon slowly builds up. Symptoms are a rough cold idle, misfire codes and lost power. Top Tier fuel helps, and the owner's manual calls for a fuel additive if Top Tier gas is not available. Walnut blasting the valves is the real fix when it gets bad.

Maintenance schedule highlights

Every 7,500-8,000 miles or 12 monthsFull synthetic oil and filter (recent manuals list 8,000 miles; older cars 7,500), tire rotation and tread check, brake inspection, fuel additive if you do not use Top Tier gas. In Florida heat with short trips, follow the manual's severe-use oil schedule instead.
Every 12 monthsCabin air filter, A/C performance check and a look at the condenser in front of the radiator for leaves and road debris. The cabin filter clogs fast here because of pollen and mildew.
24,000 miles or 36 monthsReplace the engine air filter, per the 2.5T schedule. Inspect it at every oil change if you drive on sandy beach access roads.
48,000 miles or 48 monthsReplace brake fluid. Inspect drive belts from 48,000 miles or 72 months. Two spark plug replacements fall within the first roughly 100,000 miles on the 2.5T table, so check your exact engine's schedule.
120,000 miles or 120 monthsFirst engine coolant replacement on recent turbo models, then every 24,000 miles or 24 months. Use the Genesis-specified coolant only.
Automatic transmissionThe 2.5T manual lists no routine fluid service under normal use. Towing, heavy stop-and-go and sustained heat count as harder use, so a fluid inspection around 60,000 miles is a reasonable precaution in South Florida.

Always confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact model and year.

Typical Genesis repair costs

JobTypical cost
Synthetic oil change after the free period$110-$180
Front brake pads and rotors$450-$800 independent, $650-$1,100 dealer

Intake valve carbon cleaning (walnut blast)$600-$1,000
Wheel alignment$140-$220
Diagnostic scan and inspection$120-$220

Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.

Dealer or independent shop?

While you are inside the 3-year/36,000-mile complimentary maintenance window, the retailer is the obvious choice: oil changes, tire rotations and filters cost you nothing, and the valet pickup saves a trip down Glades Road. Recall work and warranty repairs must go to an authorized Genesis retailer regardless.

After that window, an independent shop that works on Hyundai and Kia products can handle almost everything on a gas Genesis. The engines and transmission are shared, and parts are widely available. Expect independent labor in Palm Beach County to run noticeably lower than the retailer's rate, often by $50 to $80 an hour.

Keep receipts that show the oil grade and interval. If you ever need to claim the 10-year powertrain warranty, Genesis can ask for proof of maintenance, and an independent shop's itemized invoice counts. Electric models are the exception: ICCU, battery and charging faults are best left to the retailer, which has the factory tools and the recall parts.

Owning a Genesis in South Florida

Genesis turbo engines run hot by design, and a GV80 idling in pickup lines and Glades Road traffic in August is working its cooling system hard. The 3.3T oil pipe recall is about oil reaching hot parts, so after any summer drive where you smell burning oil, look under the car in your driveway before the next trip.

Two of the Genesis fire recalls advise parking outside until repaired, and one involves water getting into the starter. After a flooded street in an afternoon storm, or during hurricane season from June 1 to November 30, a car that cranks slowly or shows electrical warnings should be checked before it sits in a closed garage overnight.

Electric Genesis models parked at a Boca condo for a summer while the owner is up north can come back with a flat 12-volt battery, especially if the ICCU recall is still open. Leave the car on a charger at a moderate state of charge, and have the recall done before you leave in spring.

Genesis FAQ

Is Genesis maintenance free?

For 2017 and newer models, scheduled maintenance is complimentary for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. It covers oil and filter, cabin filter and tire rotation, and the retailer can pick up and return the car. After that you pay like any other brand.

Can an independent shop service my Genesis without voiding the warranty?

Yes. Federal law lets you use any shop for routine maintenance. Keep itemized receipts showing the oil type and mileage. Warranty repairs and recalls still have to be done by a Genesis retailer.

Does a used Genesis still have the 10-year powertrain warranty?

Not always. The long powertrain term is aimed at the original owner under Hyundai-group terms, and later owners usually get less. Certified pre-owned cars carry their own coverage. Read the warranty booklet or call Genesis with the VIN.

How do I know if my Genesis has an open recall?

Enter the 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or in the Genesis app. Genesis has had multiple fuel pump, fire risk and charging recalls since 2021, so check even if you bought the car recently.

Why is my Genesis EV's 12-volt battery dying?

On the GV60, Electrified GV70 and Electrified G80, a failing ICCU stops charging the 12-volt battery. The 24V-868 recall covers inspection and replacement. If the car shows a charging warning, have it towed rather than driven far.

Guides for Genesis owners

Check engine light on but the car drives fine: what does it mean?
A steady check engine light means the engine computer has stored a fault code, most often for a loose gas cap, an oxygen sensor, an evaporative emissions leak or worn spark plugs. If the car drives normally and no other red warning is lit, you can usually keep driving for a few days, but get the code read soon so a small problem does not grow into a catalytic converter bill.
Why does my car battery keep dying? Finding the real cause
A battery that keeps going flat has one of three problems: it is worn out and cannot hold a charge, something is drawing power while the car is off, or the alternator is not refilling it while you drive. A free battery and charging test rules out the first and third, and a parasitic draw test with a meter finds the second.
Why is my car A/C blowing warm air?
Most often the system is low on refrigerant because of a slow leak, and the compressor has stopped engaging. The next most likely causes are a failed compressor clutch, a dead condenser fan, or a stuck blend door. Check whether the compressor clutch spins and the fans run before paying for a recharge, because a recharge without a leak repair usually wears off within weeks.
Should I take my car to the dealer or an independent shop?
Use the dealer for anything the factory pays for, meaning warranty repairs and safety recalls, and for some software or programming jobs. For routine maintenance and most out-of-warranty repairs, a good independent shop usually charges noticeably less per hour, and federal law says using one does not void your warranty.
How do I prepare my car for a hurricane in Florida?
Keep at least half a tank of fuel (or 50-80% charge on an EV) all season, photograph the car and its documents, confirm you carry comprehensive coverage, and park on the highest ground you can reach away from trees. Do the mechanical checks, like tires, wipers and battery, before a cone appears on the map, because shops and parts stores fill up fast.
How often should I change my oil in Florida?
For most cars built in the last 10 to 15 years, follow the owner's manual or the oil life monitor, which usually lands between 5,000 and 10,000 miles, and never go more than 12 months. Heat alone does not automatically put you on the severe schedule, but the way many people drive here, with lots of idling in traffic and short errands, often does. The old 3,000-mile rule is outdated for nearly every modern engine.
