Buicks are among the more dependable American cars, and most problems cluster in two places: timing chains and the six-speed automatic on 2008-2017 Enclaves, and coolant and oil leaks on the 1.4 turbo Encore. Neither is mysterious, any GM-experienced shop can fix them, and catching the early signs keeps the bill in the hundreds rather than the thousands.
Buick sits in an unusual spot. It is GM's near-luxury brand, it scores well in reliability surveys, RepairPal places it 13th of 32 brands with average unscheduled repair spending of $608 a year, and its buyers tend to keep cars a long time. In Boca Raton that means a lot of well-kept Enclaves and Encores with modest miles, plus older LaCrosses, Lucernes and LeSabres that have been garaged by the same owner for years.
Nearly every Buick sold here in the last fifteen years is built on a Chevrolet or GMC platform. The first-generation Enclave is the twin of the GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse. The Encore shares its engine with the Chevrolet Trax and Cruze. That matters when something breaks, because parts are made in huge volumes and there is a deep base of repair knowledge for each known failure.
New Buicks carry a 4-year or 50,000-mile basic warranty and 6 years or 70,000 miles on the powertrain. That longer powertrain term covers many of the expensive engine and transmission failures listed below, so check the in-service date before paying out of pocket.
Popular Buick models in South Florida
- Enclave (2008-2017): Three-row crossover with the 3.6 V6 and a six-speed automatic. Roomy and quiet, but the best-documented trouble spots of any recent Buick: timing chain stretch, transmission wave plate failure and side airbag connector warnings.
- Enclave (2018-2024): Second generation with a revised 3.6 V6, engine stop-start and a nine-speed automatic. Generally more trouble-free than the first generation. Shift quality complaints are usually addressed with software.
- Encore (2013-2022): Small crossover with a 1.4 turbo four. Cheap to run, but coolant leaks from the plastic water outlet and turbo lines, plus oil leaks from the valve cover, are common past 60,000 miles.
- Encore GX (2020-present): Larger than the Encore despite the name, with a 1.2 or 1.3 three-cylinder turbo. 2021 models were recalled for an electronic brake boost sensor connection that could lose brake assist.
- Envision (2016-present): Compact crossover built in China. Early years offered a 2.5 four or a 2.0 turbo, and later ones the 2.0 turbo only. Some body and trim parts can take longer to arrive than for US-built Buicks.
- LaCrosse (2010-2019) and Lucerne (2006-2011): Full-size sedans still common with long-time local owners. The LaCrosse's 3.6 V6 shares the Enclave's timing chain concerns on early years.
Known Buick problems to watch for
Timing chain stretch on the first-generation Enclave
The chains on this direct-injected V6 can elongate, which throws off cam timing. You usually see a check engine light with codes P0008, P0009, P0016 or P0017, sometimes with a rattle on cold start and rough running. Oil that is low or overdue makes it much more likely. Replacing the chains with new guides and tensioners is a long job on a transverse V6 and typically costs $2,000-$3,500 at an independent shop. Ignoring the codes risks a chain jumping and bending valves.
Guide: Check engine light on but the car drives fine: what does it mean?Six-speed automatic loses 3rd, 5th and reverse
A wave plate inside the 3-5-reverse clutch pack can break apart. The transmission then skips from 2nd to 4th, refuses to engage reverse or goes into a limp mode, and a code such as P0776 may appear. The broken pieces contaminate the fluid, so the repair is a rebuild with the revised part, typically $2,800-$4,500, or a remanufactured unit for a similar price. A van that suddenly has no reverse should be towed, not driven.
Guide: Why is my transmission slipping?Service Side Airbag message
A warning to service the side airbag system often traces to the wiring connectors under the front seats, where higher resistance can stop side airbags and pretensioners from firing. NHTSA campaign 14V118 covers affected vehicles and the fix is free. If the recall is already done and the light returns, a shop can repair or replace the connector for roughly $150-$350. Never probe airbag connectors with a test light or unplug them with the battery connected.
Encore 1.4 turbo coolant leaks
The plastic water outlet and thermostat housing, the coolant lines to the turbocharger, and the water pump are all known leak points. Signs are a sweet smell after driving, a low coolant warning, or pink crust around hose joints. A leaking outlet or thermostat housing typically costs $250-$500 to replace and a water pump $500-$850. Do not open the coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot.
Guide: Sweet smell from my car, like maple syrup: is it a coolant leak?Encore valve cover and PCV leak
The crankcase ventilation valve on this engine is built into the plastic valve cover. When its diaphragm tears, the engine can whistle at idle, burn oil, run lean and leak oil at the cover gasket. The repair is a new valve cover with the integrated valve, typically $300-$550 installed.
Guide: Oil leaking under my car: where is it coming from?Encore power steering and airbag recalls
Campaign 15V146 covers an electric power steering circuit board that could wear against the column housing and suddenly lose assist, which makes the car hard to steer at parking lot speeds. Campaigns 16V651 and 17V437 fixed airbag module software that could stop the front airbags from deploying. All three are free at a Buick dealer.
Maintenance schedule highlights
| At the oil life monitor's change prompt, at least yearly | dexos-approved full synthetic oil and filter. The turbo Encore and Encore GX are especially sensitive to oil quality, so do not stretch the change past what the monitor asks. |
| Every 7,500 miles | Rotate tires, check pressures with the tires cold, inspect brakes and look for coolant crust around the Encore's water outlet. |
| Every 22,500 miles | Cabin air filter, or sooner if the A/C airflow drops or smells damp. |
| Every 45,000 miles | Engine air filter. Change the automatic transmission fluid at this point if the car spends most of its time in hot stop-and-go traffic, which GM lists as severe service. |
| 97,500 miles | Spark plugs, and transmission fluid if you follow the normal schedule. Inspect the accessory belt. |
| 5 years or 150,000 miles | Drain and refill the long-life coolant, whichever arrives first. |
Always confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact model and year.

Dealer or independent shop?
If your Buick is inside 6 years or 70,000 miles, take any engine or transmission fault to a Buick dealer first, because timing chains and transmission internals fall under powertrain coverage. The same goes for every open recall. Dealers can also apply GM transmission software updates and program modules with factory tools.
Once a Buick is out of coverage, a capable independent shop is a very good fit. These cars use mainstream GM parts, and timing chains, wave plate rebuilds, Encore coolant work and suspension jobs are routine for shops that see Chevrolet and GMC vehicles every day. Expect independent labor around $130-$175 an hour in Palm Beach County versus roughly $180-$240 at a dealer.
For transmission work, ask whether the shop rebuilds in house or installs a remanufactured unit, and what the warranty is. A remanufactured transmission with a nationwide 3-year warranty can be worth a slightly higher price if you travel or split the year between Florida and up north.
Owning a Buick in South Florida
A Buick that spends its summers parked while the owner is up north faces a particular set of risks. Batteries go flat, tires flat-spot, and moisture builds up in fuel and oil. If an Encore or Enclave sits from May to November, have someone drive it 20 minutes every couple of weeks, or at minimum connect a battery maintainer and add fuel stabilizer before leaving.
Encore cooling system plastics are the components that suffer most in Boca Raton heat. Engine bay temperatures in a stalled line on Glades Road or Military Trail push the water outlet and hoses through hard heat cycles, and a small seep can become a sudden leak. Glance at the coolant reservoir monthly with the engine cold.
First-generation Enclaves carry a lot of glass and a large dark dashboard. In the June-to-September sun, run the A/C on fresh air for the first minute to push out superheated cabin air, then switch to recirculation. Rear A/C performance on these crossovers is a good test drive check for a used purchase, since a weak rear system can mean a leak in the long lines to the back of the vehicle.

Buick FAQ
Are Buicks expensive to repair?
Not compared with most luxury brands. Parts are shared with Chevrolet and GMC, so they are widely available and reasonably priced, and RepairPal puts Buick's average yearly repair spending below the industry average.
How do I know if my Enclave's timing chain is stretched?
A check engine light with cam and crank correlation codes, often P0008 or P0017, is the main sign. A shop can read the cam timing data with a scan tool to confirm before quoting the job.
Is a used first-generation Enclave a good buy?
It can be, with documentation. Look for receipts showing the timing chain or transmission was already done, confirm all recalls are closed, and test reverse and every gear on a warm engine.
What oil does a Buick need?
A full synthetic approved to GM's dexos specification, in the viscosity printed on the oil cap or in the manual. The turbo engines in particular need the correct spec to prevent low-speed pre-ignition and timing chain wear.
