Mazdas are among the cheapest mainstream cars to keep running, and most Skyactiv models since 2014 have few serious problems. The big exception is the 2007-2015 CX-9 V6, whose internal water pump can ruin the engine. Newer owners should check recalls for false automatic braking, fuel pumps and the many first-year CX-90 campaigns.
Mazda earns its good reputation with numbers. RepairPal rates the brand 4.0 out of 5 and fifth of 32, with average annual repair and maintenance spending around $462 against $652 for all brands, and only 10 percent of repairs rated severe. Factory coverage is 3 years or 36,000 miles bumper to bumper and 5 years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain.
Much of that comes from Mazda's conservative engineering. Since about 2014 most models use Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engines with a conventional six-speed automatic, Skyactiv-Drive, rather than a CVT. There is no timing belt to replace and no CVT to baby. The 2.5-liter turbo arrived in the 2016 CX-9 and later spread to the CX-5, Mazda3, CX-30 and CX-50, and the 2024 CX-90 introduced a new 3.3-liter turbo inline-six and a plug-in hybrid.
Mazda's weak spots are specific and well documented, which makes them easy to plan around. The first-generation CX-9 used a Ford-derived V6 with a water pump buried behind the timing chain. Recent models have had software and parts recalls rather than design failures, and the CX-90 had an unusually long recall list in its launch year.
Popular Mazda models in South Florida
- CX-5 (2013-2016, 2017+): Mazda's best seller and a common sight around Boca. Generally durable. 2018-2019 cars had an engine stall software recall and a low-pressure fuel pump recall; 2014-2016 cars a fuel filler pipe recall.
- Mazda3 (2014-2018, 2019+): Sedan and hatchback. 2014-2016 cars had a rear parking brake caliper corrosion recall, 2014-2018 cars a flickering backup camera recall, and 2019-2020 cars a false automatic braking recall.
- CX-30 (2020+): Small crossover built on the Mazda3. 2022-2023 cars were recalled for a damaged ABS hydraulic unit that can reduce braking.
- CX-50 (2023+): Rugged-styled compact SUV built in Alabama. Few problems so far beyond an ABS unit recall shared with the CX-30 and an accessory hitch harness recall.
- CX-9 (2007-2015, 2016-2023): The first generation's 3.7 V6 has the water pump weakness and front ball joint corrosion recall. The second generation's 2.5 turbo is a different, better engine.
- CX-90 (2024+): The three-row replacement for the CX-9, with mild hybrid and plug-in versions. 2024 models had about a dozen recalls; check every one by VIN.
- MX-5 Miata (2016+): Simple, light and robust. 2018-2019 cars are in the low-pressure fuel pump recall. Soft tops need UV care in Florida sun.
Known Mazda problems to watch for
CX-9 V6 internal water pump failure
The water pump is driven by the timing chain and sits inside the engine. When its seal fails, coolant can leak into the oil, which turns it milky and destroys bearings. Watch for coolant that keeps going down with no visible leak, a sweet smell, or overheating. Many owners replace it preventively, along with the timing chain parts, once the car is past about 100,000 miles. RepairPal's year-by-year data puts the job around $2,000-$3,100 for these years.
Guide: Sweet smell from my car, like maple syrup: is it a coolant leak?False automatic emergency braking
The forward collision system could misread the road ahead and brake hard for nothing, which risks a rear-end crash. Both recalls are fixed with free software updates. If your car brakes on its own before the update, keep a bigger gap and report it to the dealer.
CX-90 launch-year recalls
Campaigns include steering and suspension bolts that may be missing or loose (23V-429), a steering worm gear that can cause sudden loss of assist (24V-022), plug-in hybrid software that can shut the engine and motor down (23V-719), an i-stop restart failure (24V-816), and camera displays that may not appear (23V-718). Each has a free fix, but it is easy to miss one; ask the dealer for the full open-campaign list.
Low-pressure fuel pump impeller
The plastic impeller inside the in-tank pump can crack and swell until it binds, cutting fuel flow. Symptoms are hesitation, a check engine light, or a stall that will not restart. Dealers replace the pump for free.
Guide: Check engine light on but the car drives fine: what does it mean?Takata passenger airbag inflators
Some cars had their inflators replaced under an early recall with parts of the same design, so Mazda issued 19V-782 to replace them again. If an older CX-9 or Mazda6 shows a completed airbag recall, run the VIN anyway to make sure the second round is done.
Spider webs in the Mazda6 evaporative vent
Yellow sac spiders can spin webs in the fuel vapor vent hose, which creates negative pressure in the tank and can crack it, leaking fuel. The free fix adds a spring-loaded cover to the vent. A fuel smell near the rear of an older Mazda6 should be checked right away.
Corroded front ball joints and parking brake calipers
Water entering the CX-9's ball joint fittings can corrode them until the joint separates, which can cost steering control. On the Mazda3 and Mazda6, water in the rear caliper can corrode the parking brake actuator shaft so it binds. Clunks over bumps or a parking brake that will not release are both reasons for an inspection.
Guide: What's that clunking noise when I go over bumps?Maintenance schedule highlights
| Every 5,000 miles or 6 months (Schedule 2), 7,500 miles or 12 months (Schedule 1) | Oil and filter, usually 0W-20, and tire rotation. Mazda's Schedule 2 is for short trips, long idling and heavy stop-and-go, which describes most Boca driving. |
| Every 15,000 miles | Cabin air filter and brake inspection. Florida A/C use makes the cabin filter the item most often overdue. |
| Every 30,000 miles | Engine air filter on the severe schedule, drive belt check, and a look at the parking brake function on 2014-2016 Mazda3 and Mazda6. |
| Every 3 years | Brake fluid replacement. Mazda's schedule includes periodic brake fluid changes, and in humid air every 3 years is a sound rule because the fluid absorbs water. |
| Around 60,000 miles | Skyactiv-Drive automatic fluid drain-and-fill for hard-used cars. Mazda lists no routine change under normal use, but heat and stop-and-go are hard on fluid. |
| Around 75,000 miles, and coolant at 10 years or 120,000 miles | Spark plugs on Skyactiv four-cylinders, and the first change of Mazda's long-life FL22 coolant. |
Always confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact model and year.
Typical Mazda repair costs
| Job | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Synthetic oil change | $60-$100 | Dealer pricing nearby usually runs $75-$120. |

Dealer or independent shop?
Mazdas are straightforward for independent shops. There is no proprietary CVT procedure, most parts are reasonably priced, and the Skyactiv engines use conventional service items. For brakes, A/C, suspension and fluids, a capable independent in Palm Beach County at roughly $130-$175 an hour usually costs less than a dealer near $175-$230.
Use a dealer for recalls, software updates and anything that touches driver-assist sensors unless the independent has the factory scan tool. The false-braking and CX-90 fixes are software, and only Mazda dealers can install them.
On a first-generation CX-9 with high mileage, get quotes from both. Dealers often replace the water pump and timing set with all-new Mazda parts, while some independents offer quality aftermarket kits for less. Either way, ask that the oil be checked for coolant before the work starts.
Owning a Mazda in South Florida
Mazda paint, especially the deep reds and grays, looks great until years of Florida sun break down the clear coat on roofs and hoods. A car parked outside at a Boca condo every day benefits from a wax or ceramic coating twice a year and a windshield sunshade to protect the dash and the touchscreen. MX-5 soft tops need a UV protectant every few months.
The 2014-2016 Mazda3 parking brake recall is about water, and few places put more water on a car than a South Florida summer, with afternoon storms flooding parking lots on Federal Highway and Spanish River Boulevard. If your parking brake feels sticky after a rainy week, get the recall checked.
Snowbird Mazdas that sit for months drain their batteries, and i-stop cars are fussy about weak batteries, often disabling start-stop and throwing warnings. Use a maintainer on the specified battery type while you are away, and drive the car 20 minutes after you return before judging any warning lights.

Mazda FAQ
Is Mazda reliable compared with Toyota and Honda?
In recent years, yes, it is in the same league. RepairPal ranks Mazda fifth of 32 brands with low average repair costs, and most Skyactiv models since 2014 have few systemic problems. The exceptions are older CX-9s and launch-year models like the 2024 CX-90.
Should I buy a used 2007-2015 CX-9?
Only with proof the water pump was replaced or a price that leaves room for it. Check for coolant in the oil and for the ball joint recall. The 2016 and later CX-9 with the 2.5 turbo is a safer used buy.
Do Mazdas have CVT transmissions?
Mainstream Mazda models sold in the US use a six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic, and the CX-90 and CX-70 use an eight-speed. That is part of why Mazdas tend to age well.
Why does my Mazda's start-stop no longer work?
i-stop shuts itself off when the battery is weak, the cabin needs heavy cooling, or the engine is not fully warm. In Florida summer it often stays off just because the A/C is working hard. If it never activates, have the battery tested.
