Acura Owner's Guide: Problems, Costs and Repair in Boca Raton

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

Acura is one of the cheapest luxury brands to keep on the road in Boca Raton, but a few model years carry serious open recalls. Check the VIN first on any 2015-2020 TLX V6 or 2016-2020 MDX for the connecting rod bearing recall, and on older Acuras for Takata air bags. Beyond that, the big scheduled bill is the V6 timing belt, and most other repairs are ordinary wear.

Acura is Honda's premium line, and it shows in the data. RepairPal rates Acura second of 32 brands for reliability, with average unscheduled repairs around $501 a year and only an 8 percent chance in a given year that a repair is severe. Consumer Reports ranks it fifth for used-car reliability but only 18th for maintenance and repair cost, which reflects pricier parts, premium fuel recommendations and luxury-dealer labor.

Most Acuras in Boca Raton are SUVs. The MDX three-row is the family hauler you see at every school pickup line on Jog Road, and the RDX is the compact alternative. The TLX sedan and the newer Integra hatchback round it out. Under the skin, many of them share engines and transmissions with Honda models, which keeps independent repair costs reasonable once the warranty ends.

Acura also uses Honda's Maintenance Minder, so there is no fixed mileage chart in the glovebox. The car tracks oil life and shows codes, and the codes matter more on Acuras because several models pair a timing-belt V6 with complex 9- or 10-speed automatics and torque-vectoring all-wheel drive that need their own fluids.

Popular Acura models in South Florida

  • MDX (2014-2020): 3.5-liter V6 with timing belt and Variable Cylinder Management. 2016-2020 used a 9-speed automatic. Certain 2016-2020 models are in the connecting rod bearing recall, and 2014-2020 tailgate lights have had moisture recalls.
  • MDX (2022+): New platform with a 10-speed automatic. The Type S uses a 3.0-liter turbo V6 and has had a fuel injection software recall.
  • RDX (2013-2018): 3.5-liter V6 with VCM and a conventional 6-speed. Simple and durable; timing belt service is the major cost.
  • RDX (2019+): 2.0-liter turbo four with a timing chain and 10-speed automatic. Early cars drew complaints about infotainment glitches, mostly fixed with software.
  • TLX (2015-2020): The 2.4-liter four used an 8-speed dual-clutch with a torque converter; the V6 used a 9-speed that had several early recalls. Certain V6 models are in the bearing recall.
  • TLX (2021+) and Integra (2023+): TLX moved to a 2.0-liter turbo and a 3.0-liter turbo Type S. The Integra shares much of its hardware with the Civic Si and is cheap to maintain.
  • ILX (2013-2022): Civic-based compact sedan. Later years used a 2.4-liter with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission that can feel jerky at parking-lot speeds.

Known Acura problems to watch for

Connecting rod bearing failure on the 3.5-liter V6

Recall 23V-751: certain 2015-2020 TLX V6 and 2016-2020 MDX

A manufacturing error in the engine can let a connecting rod bearing wear until it seizes. Symptoms start as a knocking noise, rough running or a check engine light and can end with the engine locking up. Dealers inspect and repair or replace the engine at no charge. Do not keep driving an affected Acura that has started to knock.

Guide: What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?

Takata air bag inflators

Including 2002-2003 3.2TL, 2003 3.2CL, 2003-2006 MDX, 2005-2012 RL, 2007-2016 RDX, 2013-2016 ILX, 2004-2006 and 2009-2014 TL, 2010-2013 ZDX

Recall 19V-182 and related campaigns replace inflators that can rupture after years of heat and humidity exposure, which South Florida supplies in abundance. The 2002-2003 TL and 2003 CL carry some of the most dangerous inflators ever recalled. An affected car should not be driven until repaired; ask Acura for a tow.

Fuel pump performance on V6 and newer models

Recall 19V-060: 2016-2018 MDX and 2015-2019 TLX V6; recalls 20V-314, 21V-215 and 23V-858 add many RDX, MDX, TLX and ILX years

Under 19V-060, fuel particulates can stick to the inside of the pump and reduce its output, leading to a lack of power or a no-start. Dealers update engine software and replace the pump as needed. The later Honda-wide recalls cover a different pump failure that can cause a stall while driving. Check both before paying for a fuel pump.

9-speed automatic recalls and shift quality

2015 TLX (recall 14V-779 on V6 models, recall 16V-640); shift complaints on 2016-2020 MDX

Early 2015 TLX V6 cars had a parking pawl issue that could prevent the transmission from holding in Park, and a later recall addressed weak harness crimps that could shift the car into neutral. Beyond the recalls, many owners reported hesitant or harsh shifts from the 9-speed, which Acura addressed with software updates. Ask the dealer to confirm the latest calibration before chasing mechanical repairs.

Guide: Why does my car shift hard or late?

VCM vibration, spark plug fouling and engine mounts

2013-2018 RDX V6 and 2014-2020 MDX

When cylinder deactivation switches off half the engine, oil control on the resting cylinders can suffer and the engine vibrates more. Over time owners see rear-bank plug fouling, misfires and worn active engine mounts, felt as a shudder at idle in Drive. Fixes are plugs, a mount, and sometimes Acura's software updates.

Guide: Why does my engine idle rough or shake at a stop?

Water in the tailgate lights

Recalls 19V-256 and 25V-259: 2014-2020 MDX (and 2017-2019 MDX Sport Hybrid in the first)

Moisture can seep into the tailgate lid light assemblies and wiring, and the lights can fail, including brake and turn lamps in the second recall. Afternoon downpours make this a real Florida concern. Look for fogged lenses or flickering lamps, then check whether your VIN has an open campaign.

Fuel injection software stall on Type S models

Recall 25V-031: 2022-2025 MDX Type S and 2021-2025 TLX Type S

A software error in the engine computer may cause a stall or loss of power. The remedy is a free software update at the dealer. It takes little time, so there is no reason to leave it open.

Maintenance schedule highlights

Minder A or B (15% oil life)A is oil only. B adds the filter and a full inspection of brakes, steering, suspension and fluids. Most Acuras use 0W-20; follow the cap.
Codes 1 and 21 is a tire rotation, important on SH-AWD models whose rear differential is sensitive to mismatched tire wear. 2 replaces the engine and cabin air filters and inspects the drive belt.
Code 3Transmission fluid, plus transfer case fluid on SH-AWD. 9- and 10-speed units use specific fluids, and the dual-clutch units use their own. This is not a generic flush.
Code 4Spark plugs and valve clearance check. On 3.5-liter V6 models this also means timing belt, tensioner and usually the water pump, typically near 100,000 miles.
Code 5Engine coolant, Honda Type 2.
Code 6Rear differential fluid on SH-AWD models. Skipping it can produce a groan or shudder in tight turns.
Code 7Brake fluid, roughly every three years.

Always confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact model and year.

Typical Acura repair costs

JobTypical cost
Synthetic oil service$80-$130
Timing belt, tensioner and water pump, V6$1,000-$1,700
Front pads and rotors, MDX$400-$700
Transmission fluid service, 9- or 10-speed$180-$320
SH-AWD rear differential fluid$120-$200
Rear active engine mount, MDX$500-$950
Spark plugs, V6$300-$500
A/C compressor, MDX$1,500-$2,500
12-volt battery, AGM on newer models$220-$380

Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.

Dealer or independent shop?

New Acuras carry a 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and a 6-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty, longer than Honda's. Use the dealer for warranty repairs and every recall on this page, all of which are free.

Out of warranty, a shop that does a lot of Honda and Acura work is usually the better value, especially for the V6 timing belt. Palm Beach County luxury dealers commonly charge $200-$260 an hour, while strong independents sit closer to $140-$185. Make sure the shop has software that can run SH-AWD and transmission relearn procedures after fluid service, and that it uses Acura or Honda fluids rather than universal ATF.

Software is the dealer's strongest card. Shift complaints, infotainment freezes on 2019 and later RDX and MDX models, and some engine stalls are fixed by reflashing modules, which independents often cannot do.

Owning a Acura in South Florida

Most Acuras recommend premium fuel, and in a Boca summer the engine computer will pull timing quickly if you fill with regular, costing power and some mileage. On the turbo RDX, TLX and Type S models, premium matters most when the car is loaded up with passengers and the A/C on full during a hot climb onto I-95.

Acura SUVs with SH-AWD spend their lives in stop-and-go on Glades and Yamato roads, which is hard on the rear differential clutches and transmission fluid even though the AWD rarely needs to do any real work. Do the Minder's codes 3 and 6 when they appear, and do not mix tire brands or wear levels across the axles.

Acura's water-in-the-tailgate recalls point to a broader Florida issue: drains and seals. Clear the sunroof drains and the cowl area below the windshield of oak leaves and palm debris before rainy season starts in late May, and a soaked headliner or flooded footwell becomes much less likely.

Acura FAQ

Is an Acura more expensive to fix than a Honda?

A little. Many parts are shared, but Acura-specific trim, electronics and SH-AWD components cost more, and dealer labor is higher. RepairPal estimates about $501 a year in unscheduled repairs for Acura versus about $428 for Honda.

When does my MDX need a timing belt?

When the Maintenance Minder shows code 4, usually close to 100,000 miles. Low-mileage cars should have the belt inspected for cracking as it ages, since rubber degrades in heat. The V6 is an interference engine, so a snapped belt can bend valves and turn a $1,500 job into an engine replacement.

Can a Honda dealer or independent fix my Acura?

Yes for most work. The engines and many systems are shared. Acura-specific items like SH-AWD calibration and some module programming need the right scan tools, so ask before booking.

How do I check whether my Acura has open recalls?

Enter the VIN from the lower driver-side windshield at NHTSA's recall lookup or on Acura's owner site. With several large engine, fuel pump and air bag recalls, this five-minute check can save thousands.

Guides for Acura owners

What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?
It depends on the sound. A light metallic pinging when you accelerate uphill is usually fuel detonation, often from the wrong octane. A fast tick that follows engine speed is usually the valvetrain. A deep, heavy knock from low in the engine that gets louder with RPM is often a worn connecting rod bearing, and that one means you should shut the engine off and have it towed.
Why does my car shift hard or late?
Hard or delayed shifts most often come from fluid that is low or past its service life, a transmission computer that needs a software update or relearn, or a worn engine or transmission mount that makes normal shifts feel like a bang. Start with the fluid and a code scan, because many shift complaints are fixed with software or service rather than parts.
What maintenance does my car need at 30k, 60k and 100k miles?
Most modern cars need an oil and filter change every 5,000-10,000 miles, filters and brake fluid around 30,000, spark plugs and some fluids between 60,000 and 100,000, and a timing belt only if the engine has one. Your owner's manual is the authority, and in South Florida the severe-service column usually fits better than the normal one.
Check engine light on but the car drives fine: what does it mean?
A steady check engine light means the engine computer has stored a fault code, most often for a loose gas cap, an oxygen sensor, an evaporative emissions leak or worn spark plugs. If the car drives normally and no other red warning is lit, you can usually keep driving for a few days, but get the code read soon so a small problem does not grow into a catalytic converter bill.
Should I take my car to the dealer or an independent shop?
Use the dealer for anything the factory pays for, meaning warranty repairs and safety recalls, and for some software or programming jobs. For routine maintenance and most out-of-warranty repairs, a good independent shop usually charges noticeably less per hour, and federal law says using one does not void your warranty.
Why does my car battery keep dying? Finding the real cause
A battery that keeps going flat has one of three problems: it is worn out and cannot hold a charge, something is drawing power while the car is off, or the alternator is not refilling it while you drive. A free battery and charging test rules out the first and third, and a parasitic draw test with a meter finds the second.
