Infiniti Owner's Guide: Problems, Costs and Repair in Boca Raton

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

Infinitis are Nissans underneath, so most parts are shared and an independent shop that knows Nissan V6s can handle the bulk of the work. The models to watch are CVT-equipped 2013-2020 QX60s and JX35s, 2011-2013 QX56s with timing chain wear, and 2019-2022 QX50s in the VC-Turbo engine bearing recall.

Infiniti is a middle-of-the-road luxury brand for reliability. RepairPal rates it 3.5 out of 5 and 16th of 32 brands, with average yearly costs of about $638, close to the $652 all-brand figure. The catch is frequency: owners make about 0.7 unscheduled repair visits a year, compared with 0.4 for the average car, even though only about 10 percent of repairs are severe. Infiniti's warranty runs 4 years or 60,000 miles basic and 6 years or 70,000 miles on the powertrain.

Most Infiniti engines are proven Nissan designs. The 3.5 and 3.7-liter VQ V6 powered the G35, G37, FX, QX60 and early Q50, the 5.6-liter V8 the QX56 and QX80, and the 3.0-liter twin-turbo VR30 the Q50 and Q60 from 2016. The QX60 shares its platform and, through 2020, its CVT with the Nissan Pathfinder; the QX80 is a close cousin of the Armada. That sharing keeps many parts reasonably priced.

The lineup has shrunk. The Q60 coupe ended after 2022 and the Q50 sedan after 2024, while the second-generation QX60 from 2022 switched to a conventional 9-speed automatic and the redesigned 2025 QX80 replaced the V8 with a twin-turbo V6. Because so many Infinitis on Palm Beach County roads are now out of warranty, knowing the specific weak points by model matters more than brand averages.

Popular Infiniti models in South Florida

  • QX60 (2014-2020) and JX35 (2013): Three-row SUV with a 3.5 V6 and CVT. The CVT is the main long-term risk, especially on the early years. Several airbag sensor and brake recalls also apply.
  • QX60 (2022+): Redesigned with a 9-speed automatic instead of the CVT. Early cars had a second-row seat bolt recall and a headlight aiming recall on 2022-2024 models.
  • Q50 (2014-2024): The sport sedan. 2014-2016 cars with steer-by-wire Direct Adaptive Steering had software recalls, and 2014-2018 rear-wheel-drive cars are in a driveshaft recall. 2016 and later 3.0t models need careful oil service.
  • QX50 (2019+) and QX55 (2022+): Use the 2.0-liter variable compression turbo, VC-Turbo, with a CVT. 2019-2022 QX50 and 2022 QX55 are in an engine bearing recall.
  • QX80 (2014-2024) and QX56 (2011-2013): Full-size V8 SUVs popular with large families and boat owners. 2011-2013 QX56s are known for timing chain wear. The 2025 redesign uses a twin-turbo V6.
  • G35 and G37 (2003-2013), Q60 (2017-2022): Rear-drive sedans and coupes still common on the used market. Older G cars are known for cracked dashboards in the sun; the Q60 shares the Q50's VR30 engine.

Known Infiniti problems to watch for

QX60 and JX35 CVT judder and failure

2013 JX35 and 2014-2020 QX60, with most complaints on 2013-2016 models

Owners describe a shudder when accelerating gently from 20 to 40 mph, a whine that builds with speed, hesitation, and at worst a loss of drive. Powertrain issues make up about half of all NHTSA complaints for the 2014 QX60. Dealers addressed many cases with software and valve body or full transmission replacement. Fresh fluid of the correct Nissan type can reduce judder, but a unit that already slips usually needs replacing.

VC-Turbo engine bearing defect

Recall 25V-437: 2019-2022 QX50 and 2022 QX55 with the 2.0-liter VC-Turbo

Infiniti says bearings in this engine may have manufacturing defects that can lead to failure, and a breached block can release hot oil and start a fire. The recall remedy is an engine computer reprogram, with owner letters mailed in April 2026. Knocking, a sudden oil warning or a check engine light on one of these is a reason to stop and call the dealer.

Guide: What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?

QX56 timing chain wear

2011-2013 QX56 and M56 with the 5.6-liter V8

Worn chains and guides set codes such as P0011 and P0021, cause rough running and power loss, and can rattle on cold starts. Infiniti ran a voluntary service campaign, P6305, in 2016 to replace the chains on eligible vehicles, but it has expired. Owners now pay for the job, which is large because the front of the engine comes apart.

Q50 Direct Adaptive Steering software

Recalls 13V-588 and 16V-430: 2014-2016 Q50 and Q50 Hybrid with Direct Adaptive Steering

This steer-by-wire system uses electronic signals between wheel and rack with a mechanical backup. A start-up error could change steering response and turning radius, and dealers reprogram the steering control unit free. If your Q50's steering ever feels different right after starting, shut it off and restart before driving, and get the recall checked.

Rear driveshaft that can break

Recall 24V-470: 2014-2018 Q50, 2014-2019 Q70, 2015-2019 Q70L, 2011-2013 M56 and some hybrids, rear-wheel drive only

The driveshaft can fatigue and snap, causing a loss of power while driving or letting the car roll if it is in Park without the parking brake. Dealers replace the driveshaft free. Until then, use the parking brake every time you park.

Cracked and sticky dashboards

G35 and G37 sedans and coupes, especially 2007-2013

Many owners report the dashboard surface bubbling, shrinking, cracking and turning sticky after years of sun, sometimes near the passenger airbag seam. These cars also draw passenger occupant sensor complaints that light the airbag warning. A replacement dash panel is expensive because the airbag must be removed; a fitted dash cover is the budget option.

Takata airbag inflators on older Infinitis

2001-2004 I30 and I35, 2002-2003 QX4, 2003-2008 FX35 and FX45, 2006-2010 M35 and M45

Florida's heat and humidity make these inflators more likely to rupture in a crash. Nissan has run several Infiniti campaigns on them. Anyone driving an older Infiniti bought secondhand should run the VIN and get the free replacement before anything else.

Maintenance schedule highlights

Every 5,000 miles or 6 monthsSynthetic oil and filter under Infiniti's premium schedule, which fits short trips and long idling, plus tire rotation. Turbo VR30 and VC-Turbo engines benefit most from short intervals.
Every 15,000 milesIn-cabin microfilter, brake inspection, and a check of steering and suspension parts.
Every 30,000 miles or 2 yearsBrake fluid, engine air filter, and differential and transfer case oil on AWD models under severe use.
30,000-60,000 milesCVT fluid on QX60, JX35 and QX50 under the premium schedule, using the exact Nissan CVT fluid specified. Drain-and-fill only; the 7-speed and 9-speed automatics have their own intervals in the manual.
Around 105,000 miles or 7 yearsIridium spark plugs on VQ and VK engines, and the first change of long-life coolant. On VQ V6s the rear plugs sit under the intake plenum, so labor is significant.

Always confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact model and year.

Typical Infiniti repair costs

JobTypical cost
Synthetic oil change$85-$140
QX60 CVT replacement$4,000-$7,500
CVT fluid drain-and-fill$220-$380
QX56 or QX80 timing chain job$3,000-$5,500
Dashboard panel replacement on G35 or G37$1,500-$3,000
Front brake pads and rotors$350-$650 per axle
V6 spark plugs$350-$600
A/C compressor$1,200-$1,900
12-volt battery$200-$320

Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.

Dealer or independent shop?

Because Infiniti engines, transmissions and many chassis parts come from Nissan, a strong Nissan-savvy independent can do nearly everything an Infiniti dealer does, often with the same parts. Independent shops around Boca generally bill about $135-$185 an hour versus roughly $185-$250 at a luxury dealer, and that gap adds up on a timing chain or CVT job.

Use the dealer for recall repairs, steering and engine software, and anything under the 6-year or 70,000-mile powertrain warranty. Infiniti's CONSULT scan tool is also needed for some CVT and steering procedures, so ask an independent whether it has an equivalent before booking CVT work.

When an older Infiniti needs a big repair, ask for two quotes: one with new genuine parts and one with remanufactured or quality used units. On a 12-year-old QX56 or QX60, the cheaper route is often the sensible one.

Owning a Infiniti in South Florida

The cracked-dash problem on G35s and G37s is a Florida story. Sun through the windshield in a Mizner Park or Town Center lot pushes dash temperatures far past 150 degrees, and years of that bakes the surface. A reflective sunshade every time you park is the single best prevention, and tinting to the legal limit helps too.

Three-row QX60s spend a lot of time at idle in school pickup lines and crawling down Yamato Road with the A/C on, which is exactly when CVT fluid runs hottest. Following the premium schedule for fluid changes is cheap compared with a transmission, and a judder that only shows up in summer heat is still worth reporting.

Many QX80 owners here tow boats to the ramps along the Intracoastal. Towing counts as severe service, so change differential and transfer case oil on the severe schedule, rinse the hitch and the underside after any saltwater launch, and check that the trailer wiring connector is not corroded before each trip.

Infiniti FAQ

Are Infinitis expensive to fix?

Less than most luxury brands, because so many parts are shared with Nissan. RepairPal puts average yearly costs near $638. The bigger issue is frequency, about 0.7 unplanned visits a year, so budget for more small repairs than on a Lexus or Acura.

Can a regular Nissan shop work on my Infiniti?

In most cases, yes. The VQ V6, VK V8 and CVTs are Nissan units, and parts are often identical. For steering software, recalls and some CVT procedures, a dealer or a shop with Nissan's factory scan tool is needed.

Is a used QX60 a good buy?

The 2022 and later QX60 with the 9-speed automatic is the safer choice. On a 2014-2020 model, look for CVT fluid service records, drive it warm to check for judder, and price in the chance of a transmission replacement.

How do I check whether my Infiniti has open recalls?

Enter the 17-digit VIN from the windshield corner or door jamb on NHTSA's recall lookup or Infiniti's owner site. Run it again every few months, because new recalls such as the VC-Turbo and driveshaft campaigns were added years after these cars were sold.

Guides for Infiniti owners

Why does my CVT shudder or whine?
A CVT that shudders when pulling away or whines louder as you speed up usually has worn fluid, outdated control software, or wear on the belt, pulleys or bearings inside. Get the fluid and software checked first, and look up your VIN for extended CVT warranties, because several automakers have paid for these repairs well past the normal warranty.
How do I keep the Florida sun from cracking or melting my dashboard?
The cheapest protection is a fitted windshield sunshade every time you park, plus a water-based UV protectant on the dash every few weeks. A dashboard in a sunny parked car can average over 150 degrees within an hour, and that heat dries out the plastic until it cracks or makes some dashes go soft and sticky. Once a dash is cracked, a molded cover is the affordable fix, because full replacement often runs $800-$2,500 with airbag work.
What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?
It depends on the sound. A light metallic pinging when you accelerate uphill is usually fuel detonation, often from the wrong octane. A fast tick that follows engine speed is usually the valvetrain. A deep, heavy knock from low in the engine that gets louder with RPM is often a worn connecting rod bearing, and that one means you should shut the engine off and have it towed.
Why does my engine idle rough or shake at a stop?
A rough, shaky idle almost always means one or more cylinders are not firing cleanly. The three usual suspects are worn spark plugs, a failing ignition coil and an air leak in a vacuum hose, and together they account for most cases. If the check engine light is flashing, the misfire is severe enough to overheat the catalytic converter, so ease off and get it checked the same day.
Should I take my car to the dealer or an independent shop?
Use the dealer for anything the factory pays for, meaning warranty repairs and safety recalls, and for some software or programming jobs. For routine maintenance and most out-of-warranty repairs, a good independent shop usually charges noticeably less per hour, and federal law says using one does not void your warranty.
What should a pre-purchase inspection check on a used car?
A proper pre-purchase inspection puts the car on a lift and checks the engine, transmission, brakes, tires, suspension, frame, A/C and electronics, plus a scan for stored and recently cleared trouble codes. Expect to pay about $100-$250 at an independent shop and more for European or exotic models, which is small next to the repair bills it can expose.
