Mercedes-Benz GLE: Problems by Year, Recalls and Repair Costs

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

The GLE is generally sturdy, but the 2020 and newer W167 has had a long run of recalls, including A/C drain hoses that dump water into the cabin and 48-volt ground cables that can overheat under the passenger seat. The 2016-2019 W166 is simpler and well understood, with air suspension and A/C odor as its main costs. Older ML-Class SUVs it replaced carry a serious brake booster recall.

The GLE is the midsize Mercedes SUV, built in Alabama and sold under that name since the 2016 model year. Before that the same vehicle line was the M-Class, badged ML350, and the 2016-2019 GLE is a renamed and refreshed version of the 2012-2015 ML. In Boca Raton the GLE fills school pickup lines and country club lots, and it racks up more A/C hours than almost any other vehicle the brand sells.

RepairPal rates its predecessor, the ML350, 3.0 out of 5 with average yearly repair costs near $1,020, about $200 more than the luxury midsize SUV average. Expect the GLE to sit in a similar range once out of warranty, with suspension and electrical work driving the bigger bills.

The two generations covered here are very different under the skin. The W166 runs a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 and a 7-speed automatic in GLE350 form, while the W167 moved to a 2.0-liter turbo four or a 3.0-liter inline-six with a 48-volt electrical system and a 9-speed.

Mercedes-Benz GLE generations

Fourth generation (W167)

2020-present
GLE350: 2.0-liter turbo four (M264), 9-speed automatic. GLE450: 3.0-liter turbo inline-six (M256) with 48-volt EQ Boost. GLE580: 4.0-liter biturbo V8 with EQ Boost. AMG GLE53 and GLE63 variants. Plug-in GLE450e added with the 2024 facelift.

Optional Airmatic air suspension and, on the GLE450, an Active Body Control system without mechanical anti-roll bars. A third-row seat became available. Facelifted for 2024 and again for 2027. Most recalls cluster on 2020-2022 models.

Third generation (W166)

2016-2019 as GLE (2012-2015 as ML-Class)
GLE350: 3.5-liter V6 (M276), 7-speed automatic, 2016-2018. GLE400 4MATIC: 3.0-liter biturbo V6, 2016-2019. GLE550e plug-in hybrid, 2016-2018. GLE300d diesel for 2016 only.

For 2019 the W166 was sold mainly as the GLE400 4MATIC and AMG versions while the W167 launched. 2016-2019 GLEs and 2012-2015 MLs are in the HVAC odor settlement.

Known Mercedes-Benz GLE problems by year

Water leaking into the cabin from A/C drain hoses

2020-2021 GLE350 and GLE450

Three recalls, 19V-587, 21V-288 and 23V-177, address A/C condensate drain hoses that were installed incorrectly, so water from the evaporator drains into the passenger compartment instead of under the SUV. Wet carpet can damage electronics mounted under the seats. If the front footwells of a 2020-2021 GLE feel damp after a hot day, check the VIN before paying for a water leak diagnosis.

48-volt ground cable overheating under the passenger seat

2020-2022 GLE450 (22V-231) and 2023-2024 GLE350, 2020-2024 GLE450 (24V-207)

The 48-volt mild-hybrid system grounds through a bolted cable under the front passenger seat, and on many SUVs that bolt was not secured properly. A loose ground can overheat and is a fire risk. Dealers inspect and tighten it. A burning electrical smell from the right front seat area means stop and call the dealer.

Engine stalls when the transmission does not downshift

2020-2023 GLE450

Recall 24V-118 updates transmission control software because the 9-speed may not fully downshift in certain conditions, causing the engine to stall. Rolling to a stop at a light on Yamato Road is exactly the moment it bites. The software update is free.

Air suspension leaks and compressor wear

2012-2019 W166 and 2020-present W167 with Airmatic

Air springs and struts dry and crack with age, and a leak keeps the compressor running until it overheats. Signs are a low corner after parking, a long whir from under the SUV, or a suspension warning. A front air strut costs $1,300-$2,400 installed, a rear air spring $500-$900, and a compressor $900-$1,600.

Musty smell from the A/C

2012-2015 ML-Class and 2016-2019 GLE

These years are in the Mercedes HVAC odor settlement approved in September 2020. A large SUV cabin with rear climate zones has more ductwork for mold to colonize. Evaporator cleaning and cabin filters run $180-$350, and evaporator replacement is a dash-out job above $2,000.

A/C compressor failure

2012-2018 ML350 and GLE350 with the 3.5 V6, usually past 60,000 miles

Heavy year-round use wears the compressor, and failure often sends debris through the system, which then needs a flush, new expansion valve and drier. RepairPal's national estimate for a ML350 compressor is $1,376-$1,863; with the extra parts after a debris failure, South Florida bills of $2,000-$2,800 are common.

Notable recalls

  • 24V-207 (2023-2024 GLE350, 2020-2024 GLE450, 2021-2024 AMG GLE53): A 48-volt ground connection under the passenger seat may not be secured and can overheat, a fire risk. Dealers inspect and tighten it.
  • 24V-118 (2020-2023 GLE450): The transmission may not fully downshift in certain conditions, stalling the engine. Dealers update the transmission control software.
  • 21V-288 (2020 GLE350, GLE450 and GLE580, 2021 AMG GLE53): A/C drain hoses may be installed incorrectly, draining water into the cabin. Related campaigns 19V-587 and 23V-177 cover other 2020-2021 builds.
  • 23V-880 (2021-2024 GLE): The fuel pump may shut down and cause a loss of drive power. Dealers replace the pump.
  • 18V-539 (2018 GLE350 and GLE350 4MATIC): Rear brake caliper pistons may not have been coated correctly, letting gas into the rear brake circuit and reducing braking performance.
  • 22V-315 (2006-2012 ML-Class (the GLE's predecessor), plus GL and R-Class): Moisture can corrode the brake booster housing and reduce braking or cause brake failure. Owners were told not to drive until the dealer inspected the booster.

Recall repairs are free at any franchised Mercedes-Benz dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since this list is not complete.

Maintenance that matters

Every 10,000 miles or yearlyService A or B. On a W167, include a check of the 48-volt system status and any software campaigns; many recalls here are software updates that get done at a routine visit.
Every 20,000 milesCabin and, where fitted, charcoal filters. SUVs that carry beach gear and dogs clog these faster, and a clogged filter makes the blower and evaporator work harder.
Every 40,000-60,000 miles7-speed or 9-speed transmission fluid and filter, transfer case fluid on 4MATIC models, and an air suspension leak test.
Twice a yearClear the cowl and sunroof drains below the windshield and around the panoramic roof. Debris in these drains is a separate cause of interior water from the A/C drain recall.

Transfer case fluid service, 4MATIC$150-$250

Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.

Buying a used Mercedes-Benz GLE

  • A 2017-2018 GLE350 is the low-risk used pick: a proven naturally aspirated V6, no 48-volt hardware, and repair costs any good independent can quote. Check the 2018 rear brake caliper recall and look for steel springs if you want to avoid air suspension bills.
  • For a W167, a 2023 or newer GLE avoids most of the early-build recalls, including the A/C drain hose campaigns. If you buy a 2020-2021, ask the dealer to print the VIN's recall history and confirm the drain hose, 48-volt ground and fuel pump work is done.
  • The 2020-2023 GLE450 is smoother and quicker than the GLE350, but confirm the 24V-118 transmission software update before buying, since the stalling it fixes happens at low speed in traffic.
  • If you are tempted by a cheap 2006-2012 ML350, confirm the brake booster recall 22V-315 was performed, with paperwork. That recall came with a do-not-drive warning.

The Florida factor

The A/C drain hose recalls hit Florida owners hardest because an evaporator here produces a remarkable amount of water: on a humid 92-degree afternoon a big SUV system sheds a steady stream of condensate for the whole drive. If that water is routed into the cabin instead of under the vehicle, carpets in a GLE parked at a Delray Beach condo will be soaked within a week and start to smell.

Sea air near A1A and the Intracoastal speeds corrosion on suspension hardware and ground connections. That matters on a W167, where so many of the recalls are electrical grounds and wiring connections. A quick look under the passenger seat for green or white corrosion at the ground terminals is worth doing when you vacuum the car.

Large SUVs with dark paint and big glass areas cook in summer. Using a windshield shade and leaving the panoramic roof shade closed while parked keeps cabin temperatures down, which helps the A/C reach comfort sooner and reduces strain on the compressor.

Mercedes-Benz GLE FAQ

Is the GLE the same as the ML350?

The GLE replaced the M-Class name for the 2016 model year. A 2016-2019 GLE is a refreshed version of the 2012-2015 ML, while the 2020 and newer GLE is an all-new design.

Why is there water on the floor of my 2020 GLE?

Several 2020-2021 GLEs were recalled because A/C drain hoses were installed incorrectly and drain into the cabin. Check your VIN for recalls 19V-587, 21V-288 and 23V-177 before paying for a diagnosis.

Should I avoid a GLE with air suspension?

Not necessarily. Airmatic gives a better ride and adjustable height, but plan on strut or compressor work somewhere past eight to ten years. A pre-purchase inspection that checks ride height after an overnight park is the best protection.

Do I need to stop driving my older ML350?

If it is a 2006-2012 ML-Class and the brake booster recall 22V-315 has not been done, yes. Mercedes advised owners not to drive affected vehicles until the dealer inspected them, and offered towing.

Guides for Mercedes-Benz GLE owners

Water leaking inside the car on the passenger floor when the A/C is on
Clear water on the front passenger floor that appears when the A/C is running almost always means the evaporator drain tube is clogged or knocked loose, so condensation backs up and spills into the cabin. Clearing it is often a 15 minute job. If the water feels slick or smells sweet, it is coolant from the heater core instead, which is a different and more serious repair.
Why does my car A/C smell musty, like mildew or old socks?
A musty, sour or dirty-sock smell from the vents almost always comes from mold and bacteria growing on the damp evaporator core behind the dash, often helped along by a clogged cabin air filter or a slow drain. Start with a new cabin filter, then have the evaporator cleaned with a foaming treatment if the smell stays. It is unpleasant but rarely a mechanical failure.
What's that clunking noise when I go over bumps?
A clunk or knock over bumps usually comes from worn sway bar end links, a tired strut mount, or worn control arm bushings, all of which let metal parts tap together. Before you book anything, empty the trunk and check that the spare and jack are tied down, because loose cargo makes the same sound. A clunk paired with loose or wandering steering can be a ball joint and needs prompt attention.
Why does my brake pedal feel soft or spongy?
A soft or spongy brake pedal means the hydraulic system is not transmitting your foot pressure cleanly, usually because of air or moisture in the fluid, a leak, or a master cylinder that is bypassing internally. Treat it as a stop-driving problem: have it towed or driven a very short distance at low speed to a brake shop. A pedal that slowly sinks while you hold it at a light is the most urgent version.
What should a pre-purchase inspection check on a used car?
A proper pre-purchase inspection puts the car on a lift and checks the engine, transmission, brakes, tires, suspension, frame, A/C and electronics, plus a scan for stored and recently cleared trouble codes. Expect to pay about $100-$250 at an independent shop and more for European or exotic models, which is small next to the repair bills it can expose.
