Toyota Tacoma: Problems by Year, Recalls and Repair Costs

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

A Tacoma will usually outlast its owner's patience, but each generation has a weak spot. 2005-2010 trucks can have rotted frames, 2016-2017 trucks drew shifting complaints and a rear differential leak recall, and 2022-2025 trucks have axle shaft and shock absorber recalls. Look underneath before you look at the price.

The Tacoma has a reputation for being nearly unbreakable, and resale values reflect it. RepairPal's numbers are more modest: 3.5 out of 5 and seventh of seven midsize trucks, with about $478 a year in unscheduled repairs and a 17 percent chance of a severe repair in any year, against 13 percent for the class. Trucks get worked harder and parked outside, and the bills show it.

In Boca the Tacoma is as likely to be a landscaper's work truck on Yamato Road as a weekend boat hauler at a public ramp on the Intracoastal. Both uses are hard on brakes, wheel bearings, the rear axle and the frame, and boat ramps add salt water to the mix. That is where most of the problems below come from.

Toyota Tacoma generations

Fourth generation (N400)

2024-present
2.4-liter T24A-FTS turbo four (228-278 hp) with 8-speed automatic or 6-speed manual; i-Force Max 2.4-liter turbo hybrid (326 hp, 465 lb-ft)

No V6 any more. Tows up to 6,500 pounds. Early trucks already have recalls for rear brake hoses on 4WD models and corroding shock absorber flanges.

Third generation

2016-2023
2.7-liter 2TR-FE four (159 hp) with 6-speed automatic, or 5-speed manual in 2016-2017; 3.5-liter 2GR-FKS V6 (278 hp) with 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual

Tows up to 6,800 pounds with the tow package. Facelifted for 2020. The 2016-2017 trucks carry most of the complaints and the differential recall.

Second generation

2005-2015
2.7-liter 2TR-FE four (164 hp); 4.0-liter 1GR-FE V6 (245 hp); 4- and 5-speed automatics, 5- and 6-speed manuals

The 4.0-liter V6 is one of Toyota's toughest engines. 2005-2010 frames are the big concern. Production moved to San Antonio, Texas in 2010.

Known Toyota Tacoma problems by year

Frames that rust through

2005-2010

A federal class action, Warner v. Toyota, ended in a settlement of up to $3.4 billion covering 2005-2010 Tacomas plus some Tundras and Sequoias whose frames could rust through. Toyota inspected frames and replaced the ones that failed its rust perforation standard, and reimbursed owners who had paid for a frame. That program is old news now, but the trucks are still around. Tap the frame rails behind the cab and near the rear leaf spring mounts with a screwdriver handle; flaking scale or soft spots mean walk away.

Peeling paint

2005 and 2017

CarComplaints names body and paint the worst Tacoma category overall, with paint peeling on 2005 trucks and paint coming off 2017 trucks among the top three problems, averaging $3,300-$3,600 to repaint. Darker colors left out in full sun lose clear coat first on the hood, roof and tailgate. Once the clear coat lifts, waxing will not save it.

Guide: Why is the clear coat peeling on my car, and can it be fixed without a full repaint?

Shifting complaints on the six-speed automatic

2016-2017

The 2016 Tacoma has more transmission complaints than any other category on CarComplaints, led by delayed engagement of Drive when cold and hesitation or hard shifts, both typically reported in the first 4,000-6,000 miles. Not shifting properly is also a top problem for 2017. A test drive that includes a cold start and a long gentle climb will tell you most of what you need to know.

Guide: Why does my car shift hard or late?

Rear differential oil leak

2016-2017

Recall 17V-285 addressed rear differentials that could leak oil, which can let the differential seize and lock the rear wheels. Look for wet, dark oil on the differential housing and on the inside of the rear tires. A whine or howl from the rear on deceleration is another warning.

Wiring chewed by rodents

2016

The top 2016 complaint on CarComplaints is engine wiring damaged by rodents, at an average of about $2,800 to repair. Owners blame soy-based wire insulation that seems to attract them. Trucks that sit outside overnight near canals, palms or construction sites are the usual victims. A check engine light or a no-start right after the truck sat for days is the typical symptom.

Guide: Check engine light on but the car drives fine: what does it mean?

Rear axle shaft that can separate

2022-2023

Recall 24V-152 covers rear axles where debris left during assembly can keep fasteners from holding torque, so an axle shaft can work loose and separate from the housing, which can cost you control of the truck. Any clunk from the rear at low speed, or grease slung on the inside of a rear wheel, on a 2022-2023 Tacoma needs the recall checked first.

Notable recalls

  • 14V-604 (2005-2011): PreRunner and 4x4 trucks built September 2009 to October 2010. A rear leaf spring can fracture and puncture the fuel tank, creating a fire risk.
  • 17V-285 (2016-2017): Oil may leak from the rear differential, which can lead to the differential seizing and a loss of control.
  • 17V-356 (2016-2017): V6 trucks. A faulty crankshaft position sensor can cause the engine to stall.
  • 20V-682 (2017-2020): In-tank low-pressure fuel pump may fail and stall the engine. Expansion of recall 20V-012.
  • 24V-152 (2022-2023): Debris can leave axle fasteners loose, so the rear axle shaft may separate from the axle housing.
  • 26V-514 (2024-2025): Includes the hybrid. Corrosion of the metal flange on front and rear shock absorbers can let the external oil reservoir detach.

Recall repairs are free at any franchised Toyota dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since this list is not complete.

Maintenance that matters

Every 5,000 milesRotate tires and look underneath: frame, leaf springs, differential, brake lines. On trucks used at boat ramps, rinse the underside the same day.
Every 10,000 miles or 12 monthsSynthetic oil change at the grade on the filler cap; towing or idling with a trailer means every 5,000. Grease any driveshaft fittings on 4x4 trucks.
Every 15,000-30,000 milesCabin and engine air filters. Work trucks that see dirt lots and job sites clog filters twice as fast.
Every 30,000 milesRear differential fluid if you tow or launch a boat; front differential and transfer case on 4x4s. Water in differential oil looks milky.
Every 60,000 milesAutomatic transmission drain-and-fill, brake fluid flush, inspect wheel bearings and front suspension bushings.
Every 120,000 milesSpark plugs. The V6 plugs are harder to reach than on the four, so ask for both quotes if you are shopping trucks.

Confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact year and engine.

Typical Toyota Tacoma repair costs

JobTypical cost
Synthetic oil change$80-$130
Front brake pads$280-$400
Spark plugs$300-$450
Water pump$750-$1,050
A/C compressor$950-$1,400
Rear differential fluid service$120-$200
Automatic transmission fluid service$320-$450
Hood and roof repaint for peeling clear coat$1,200-$3,600

Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.

Buying a used Toyota Tacoma

  • Avoid any 2005-2010 Tacoma whose frame has not been inspected or replaced. A truck with a documented frame replacement under the settlement can be a good buy, since the replacement frame is newer than the rest of the truck. Ask for the paperwork.
  • The 2011-2015 trucks with the 4.0-liter V6 are many buyers' favorite older Tacoma: simple, strong, and past the frame issue. Check the leaf springs on early 2011 trucks for recall 14V-604 and look closely at rust on the bed supports and spare tire carrier.
  • For a third-generation truck, a 2018-2023 is the safer pick over 2016-2017, which have the most shifting complaints and the differential and crank sensor recalls. Confirm the 2017-2020 fuel pump recall and, on 2022-2023, the rear axle recall 24V-152.
  • The 2024 and newer trucks are still early in their record. Buy with warranty, and make sure the shock absorber and rear brake hose recalls are done, especially on a truck that already has mud or salt on the chassis.

The Florida factor

Boat owners are the Tacoma's best customers here and its hardest users. Backing a trailer down a ramp off the Intracoastal or at an inlet puts the rear hubs, brake drums and leaf spring hangers into salt water every weekend. Flush the underside with fresh water the same day, and pull the rear drums once a year, because salt destroys brake hardware long before the shoes wear out. The recall for corroding shock flanges on 2024-2025 trucks shows how fast salt finds metal.

Florida sun is behind the paint complaints. A Tacoma parked at a job site from 7 to 5 bakes its hood and roof all day, and the clear coat eventually crazes and lifts. A garage, a car cover, or at least regular wax and a ceramic coating on a newer truck slows it. Bed liners and black plastic trim also fade to gray, which a UV protectant reverses for a while.

Rodent damage is not only a northern problem. Rats nest in palm trees and around canals in every Boca neighborhood, and a truck that sits outside for a week while the owner is away is an invitation. Peppermint deterrents help a little; checking under the hood regularly helps more.

Toyota Tacoma FAQ

Which Tacoma years should I avoid?

Be very careful with 2005-2010 trucks unless the frame was inspected or replaced. The 2016-2017 trucks are not bad, but they have the most transmission complaints and several recalls. Check recall status on any year by VIN.

Is the 2.7-liter four-cylinder Tacoma reliable?

Yes. The 2TR-FE is a simple, durable engine used in both the second and third generations. It is slow with a load, so if you tow a boat, the V6 or the newer turbo four is the better fit.

How do I check a used Tacoma frame for rust?

With the truck parked on level ground, look along both frame rails from behind the front wheels to the rear bumper, paying attention to the area above the rear axle and the spring hangers. Tap suspicious spots firmly with a screwdriver handle. Scale that falls off in sheets or any hole is a deal breaker. Never crawl under a truck supported only by a jack.

Should I worry about the 2024 Tacoma i-Force Max hybrid?

It is new, so long-term data is thin. Toyota's hybrid parts carry a separate warranty that runs longer than the basic one. Treat it as you would any first-year design and keep up with recall notices.

Guides for Toyota Tacoma owners

Does salt air near the beach rust your car, and how do you stop it?
Yes. Salt carried on ocean air settles on the car, absorbs moisture from Florida humidity and speeds up corrosion wherever bare metal is exposed. Regular fresh-water rinses including the underside, sealing stone chips quickly and keeping drain holes clear prevent most of it. Catching a rust bubble early costs a few hundred dollars, while letting it spread can mean $1,000 or more per panel.
Why is the clear coat peeling on my car, and can it be fixed without a full repaint?
Clear coat peels because years of UV exposure break down the clear layer until it loses its grip on the color coat beneath. Once it is actually flaking, no polish or wax will fix it: the panel has to be sanded and refinished, typically $400-$900 per panel in South Florida. If the clear is only dull or chalky and not yet lifting, a polish and sealant can buy a year or more.
Why does my car shift hard or late?
Hard or delayed shifts most often come from fluid that is low or past its service life, a transmission computer that needs a software update or relearn, or a worn engine or transmission mount that makes normal shifts feel like a bang. Start with the fluid and a code scan, because many shift complaints are fixed with software or service rather than parts.
Humming noise that gets louder with speed: is it a wheel bearing?
A hum or growl that rises and falls with road speed, not engine speed, is most often a worn wheel bearing or uneven tire wear. A bearing usually changes pitch when you swerve gently left and right, getting louder when weight shifts onto the bad side. Get it diagnosed within a few weeks; a bearing that keeps deteriorating can eventually develop play, affect the ABS sensor, and in extreme cases let the wheel wobble.
What should a pre-purchase inspection check on a used car?
A proper pre-purchase inspection puts the car on a lift and checks the engine, transmission, brakes, tires, suspension, frame, A/C and electronics, plus a scan for stored and recently cleared trouble codes. Expect to pay about $100-$250 at an independent shop and more for European or exotic models, which is small next to the repair bills it can expose.
Check engine light on but the car drives fine: what does it mean?
A steady check engine light means the engine computer has stored a fault code, most often for a loose gas cap, an oxygen sensor, an evaporative emissions leak or worn spark plugs. If the car drives normally and no other red warning is lit, you can usually keep driving for a few days, but get the code read soon so a small problem does not grow into a catalytic converter bill.
