Mercedes-Benz GLC: Problems by Year, Recalls and Repair Costs

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

The two GLC complaints Boca Raton owners search most, an A/C that cannot keep up in summer and a shifter that will not leave Park, usually trace to a refrigerant or condenser problem and to a weak battery or transmission electronics, not to a failed engine. The 2016-2022 X253 GLC300 is a solid used buy once its recalls are closed; the 2023 and newer X254 adds a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that brings its own warnings.

The GLC replaced the GLK for the 2016 model year and quickly became one of the most common Mercedes SUVs in Palm Beach County. Most local examples are GLC300 4MATIC models that started life on a three-year lease, which means a steady supply of 30,000- to 45,000-mile used cars coming off warranty right when the first real repairs show up.

Mechanically it is a C-Class on stilts: the same 2.0-liter turbo four, the same 9-speed automatic, and many of the same electronic modules. That helps, because parts are plentiful and independent Mercedes shops know the platform well. RepairPal does not publish a GLC300 score because of limited data, but the luxury midsize SUV segment it belongs to averages about $807 a year in repairs.

What sets a GLC apart in South Florida is how hard its climate control works. A dark SUV with a panoramic roof sitting in a Boca Town Center lot at 3 p.m. in August is the toughest test any A/C system gets, and a borderline system that would feel fine in Atlanta feels weak here.

Mercedes-Benz GLC generations

Second generation (X254)

2023-present
GLC300: 2.0-liter turbo four with 48-volt starter-generator, 9-speed automatic. AMG GLC43: 2.0-liter turbo four with electric turbocharger. GLC350e plug-in hybrid from 2025.

Larger screens, more software, and a mild-hybrid system on every gasoline model. Owner complaints to NHTSA include 48-volt battery warnings that leave the SUV unable to restart or shift.

First generation (X253)

2016-2022
GLC300: 2.0-liter turbo four (M274 for 2016-2019, updated M264 for 2020-2022), 9-speed automatic. AMG GLC43: 3.0-liter biturbo V6. GLC350e plug-in hybrid for 2018-2020. AMG GLC63 V8 from 2018.

Refreshed for 2020 with MBUX infotainment and the revised engine. Coupe body offered from 2017. 2016-2019 models are in the HVAC odor settlement.

Predecessor: GLK-Class (X204)

2010-2015
GLK350: 3.5-liter V6 (port-injected M272 through 2012, direct-injected from 2013), 7-speed automatic. GLK250 BlueTEC diesel for 2013-2015.

Boxier and built on the W204 C-Class platform. Still common as an inexpensive used SUV here. 2014-2015 GLK350s registered in Florida are in Takata recall 19V-010.

Known Mercedes-Benz GLC problems by year

A/C struggles to cool in peak summer heat

2016-2024 GLC300, most often on cars past 50,000 miles

No recall or bulletin covers weak cooling, so treat it as a diagnosis, not a known defect. The usual causes are a slow refrigerant leak at a line seal or the condenser, a condenser packed with debris behind the front grille, or a compressor wearing out; RepairPal notes compressors often fail around 60,000-70,000 miles. A leak test and recharge with R-1234yf costs $200-$400, a condenser $900-$1,400, and a compressor about $1,700-$2,200 installed.

Shifter stuck in Park, or drops to Neutral when you select Drive

2016-2022 (X253) and 2023-2024 (X254)

NHTSA's complaint database holds a string of GLC reports of the column shifter refusing to engage Drive or Reverse, falling back to Neutral, or not locking into Park. The most common fixable cause is low 12-volt voltage, since the electronic shifter and parking pawl need full power to move. Other causes are a faulty brake light switch, which blocks the shift interlock, and on X253 models the 9-speed's control unit or valve body. On the X254, several owners report a 48-volt battery fault leaving the SUV unable to shift at all. Test the battery first ($0-$50), then budget $150-$250 for diagnosis; a transmission control or valve body repair runs $1,500-$3,000.

A/C control unit software sets a false check engine light

2016-2021 GLC (253 platform)

Mercedes bulletin NCU-2023060003 says the A/C control unit software may wrongly detect a stuck-open engine thermostat and turn on the check engine light. The dealer remedy is a software update under an emissions service campaign. If your GLC shows a thermostat code but the temperature gauge reads normal, ask about this bulletin before replacing the thermostat.

Musty smell from the vents

2016-2019 GLC

These years are named in the Mercedes HVAC odor settlement approved in September 2020. The fix is cleaning or, in stubborn cases, replacing the evaporator. Cleaning and a fresh cabin filter typically cost $150-$300, while evaporator replacement means pulling the dashboard and runs into four figures.

Oil leaking into camshaft solenoid connectors

2016-2019 GLC300 with the M274 engine

The camshaft adjuster solenoids at the front of the 2.0 turbo can let oil into their plugs, and from there it wicks along the wiring. Look for a camshaft position code and an oily film on the connectors during an oil change. Solenoids with a pigtail harness run $400-$850.

12-volt and 48-volt battery warnings, no-start

2023-2024 GLC300 (X254)

Owner complaints describe sudden shutdowns with '48V Battery Service Required' and 12-volt warnings, and some cars would not restart or go into Park. Recall 24V-115 also covers 80-amp fuses that may fail and cut drive power on 2023-2024 models. Check the VIN, and keep the SUV on a maintainer if it will sit.

Notable recalls

  • 17V-114 (2016 GLC300, 2016-2017 GLC300 4MATIC, 2017 GLC300 4MATIC Coupe): If the engine cannot turn over, repeated start attempts can overheat the starting current limiter and melt nearby parts. Dealers add a fuse to the starter circuit.
  • 21V-197 (2016-2020 GLC300): Adhesive holding the front roof panel can deteriorate and let the panel detach at speed. A related campaign, 23V-854, covers panels that were not bonded correctly during a prior repair.
  • 23V-445 (2021-2023 GLC, with a follow-up campaign 23V-880 for 2021-2024 models): The fuel pump may shut down while driving and cause a loss of drive power. Dealers replace the pump.
  • 25V-533 (2023-2026 GLC): The steering coupling bolt may not have been tightened properly, so the coupling can loosen from the steering rack and cause loss of steering control. Dealers tighten the bolts.
  • 26V-481 (2023-2024 GLC): A corroded micro-switch in the driver's door lock may fail to detect an open door, so the parking brake or Auto-Park may not engage automatically and the SUV can roll away. Dealers replace the door lock; the campaign is being phased in by model.

Maintenance that matters

Every 10,000 miles or 1 yearAlternating Service A and Service B with synthetic oil to Mercedes spec. Ask the shop to look at the oil-solenoid connectors on 2016-2019 cars each time.
Every 20,000 miles, or yearly in FloridaCabin filter. A GLC that parks under oaks or ficus hedges clogs this filter fast, and a blocked filter is the cheapest reason for weak airflow from the vents.
Each spring before the heatHave the A/C vent temperature measured and the condenser in front of the radiator rinsed from the engine side. A healthy GLC system should blow roughly 40-45 degrees at the center vents on recirculation.
About every 60,000 miles9-speed transmission fluid and filter service. Mercedes treats it as long-life, but heat and stop-and-go use are hard on the fluid; specialists here commonly do it at 60,000.
Every 3-4 years12-volt AGM battery with registration. Replace it on age, not only when it fails, because a weak battery causes shifting and warning-light complaints before it causes a no-start.

Typical Mercedes-Benz GLC repair costs

JobTypical cost
A/C performance check and leak test$120-$200
A/C compressor replacement$1,700-$2,200
A/C condenser replacement$900-$1,400
12-volt battery with registration$360-$520
Brake light switch$120-$250
9-speed fluid and filter service$450-$700
Camshaft solenoids with harness$400-$850

Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.

Buying a used Mercedes-Benz GLC

  • Seek out a 2020-2022 GLC300. It has the updated engine and the refreshed cabin and fewer open campaigns than the first model years. Note that these years are not in the odor settlement, so evaporator work is on you.
  • A 2016-2017 GLC300 can be a bargain, but it carries the starter fuse recall and the roof panel campaign, and it is the generation most often reported for shifter complaints. Drive it hot, shift between Drive, Reverse and Park several times, and walk away if it hesitates.
  • For a 2023 or newer GLC, buy certified pre-owned or with a solid extended warranty. The 48-volt system is still young, and several recalls (fuses, steering coupling, door lock switch) are recent enough that parts may still be on backorder.
  • On any GLC, a pre-purchase inspection in summer should include a vent temperature reading. A system that only reaches 55 degrees on a 92-degree day is telling you about a repair.

The Florida factor

A/C is the system a Boca GLC lives or dies on. The condenser sits ahead of the radiator where it collects lovebugs every May and September, along with sand and leaf litter blown off the parking lot. A bug-caked condenser cannot shed heat, head pressure climbs, and the system feels weak exactly when it is 94 degrees on Glades Road. A gentle hose rinse through the grille at each oil change costs nothing.

Stop-and-go traffic is also hard on the 12-volt battery, because the auto start-stop and the electronic shifter draw heavily while the engine idles at long lights on Federal Highway. A battery that tests weak in June will often fail in August. If your shifter balks at Park, test the battery before you assume the transmission is failing.

Snowbirds who leave a GLC parked from May to November should use a battery maintainer, crack the windows slightly in a garage, and run the A/C for 15 minutes on return before booking a repair. Seals dry out when a system sits, and a short run often brings it back.

Mercedes-Benz GLC FAQ

Why does my GLC300 A/C blow cool but not cold on hot afternoons?

Most often the system is slightly low on refrigerant or the condenser is clogged, so it keeps up in the morning but falls behind in full sun. Have a shop measure vent temperature and pressures; recharging without finding the leak just repeats the visit next summer.

My GLC will not shift out of Park. What should I check first?

Press the brake firmly and watch whether the brake lights come on, then have the 12-volt battery tested. A failed brake light switch or low voltage is the usual cause. If both are fine and the SUV drops into Neutral or refuses gears, it needs a transmission scan.

Is it safe to drive a GLC that sometimes slips into Neutral?

Treat it as unsafe in traffic. Losing drive while pulling into a busy road is a crash risk. Have it scanned and check for open recalls before using it daily.

What fuel economy does a GLC300 get?

EPA rates the 2018-2020 GLC300 4MATIC at 24 mpg combined and the 2023 model at 26 mpg combined, both on premium fuel.

Guides for Mercedes-Benz GLC owners

Why is my car A/C blowing warm air?
Most often the system is low on refrigerant because of a slow leak, and the compressor has stopped engaging. The next most likely causes are a failed compressor clutch, a dead condenser fan, or a stuck blend door. Check whether the compressor clutch spins and the fans run before paying for a recharge, because a recharge without a leak repair usually wears off within weeks.
Car A/C blows cold, then turns warm after a while. What's wrong?
A/C that starts cold and fades during a drive usually has one of three problems: the evaporator is icing over and blocking airflow, the compressor clutch is slipping or dropping out once it gets hot, or the condenser fan cannot keep up in traffic. When it fades, and how it comes back, tells you which one you have.
Why does my car shift hard or late?
Hard or delayed shifts most often come from fluid that is low or past its service life, a transmission computer that needs a software update or relearn, or a worn engine or transmission mount that makes normal shifts feel like a bang. Start with the fluid and a code scan, because many shift complaints are fixed with software or service rather than parts.
Why does my car battery keep dying? Finding the real cause
A battery that keeps going flat has one of three problems: it is worn out and cannot hold a charge, something is drawing power while the car is off, or the alternator is not refilling it while you drive. A free battery and charging test rules out the first and third, and a parasitic draw test with a meter finds the second.
Why does my car A/C smell musty, like mildew or old socks?
A musty, sour or dirty-sock smell from the vents almost always comes from mold and bacteria growing on the damp evaporator core behind the dash, often helped along by a clogged cabin air filter or a slow drain. Start with a new cabin filter, then have the evaporator cleaned with a foaming treatment if the smell stays. It is unpleasant but rarely a mechanical failure.
