A Tahoe's biggest risks are in its V8. The 5.3L and 6.2L engines from 2015 on use cylinder deactivation lifters that can fail, and 2021-2024 Tahoes with the 6.2L are in engine recall 25V-274. The 2021 redesign also had several first-year recalls, including rear driveshafts, a fuel tank and power steering software. Check the VIN, then listen to the engine at a cold idle.
In Boca Raton, the Tahoe is a family car first: carpools to Saint Andrew's and Pine Crest, trips to the Keys, and towing a jet ski on weekends. It is built on the same full-size GM truck platform as the Silverado, so it shares most of its engines and transmissions. Its rear suspension, interior electronics and some recalls are its own.
RepairPal lists the Tahoe at 3.5 out of 5, 21st of 26 midsize SUVs in its rankings. The average owner spends about $744 a year on repairs, above the $573 midsize average, with 0.3 unscheduled visits a year. RepairPal notes that Tahoe repairs happen less often than average but are more often severe, 16 percent against 13 percent.
That severity comes from the parts that are expensive on any big SUV: V8 valvetrain work, the 10-speed transmission and, on newer models, air suspension and electronics. Routine work like brakes and oil changes is reasonably priced, because most independent shops in the area service GM trucks every day.
Chevrolet Tahoe generations
Fifth generation (T1XX)
2021-presentIndependent multilink rear suspension in place of the old solid axle, a much bigger third row and cargo area, push-button gear selector and available Air Ride Adaptive Suspension. Facelifted for 2025.
Fourth generation (K2XX)
2015-2020Solid rear axle. Active Fuel Management on both V8s.
Third generation (GMT900)
2007-2014Active Fuel Management was added to the 5.3L in this generation. The Tahoe Hybrid was dropped after 2013. Now mostly a budget used buy.
Known Chevrolet Tahoe problems by year
Lifter failure on AFM and DFM V8s
These engines turn cylinders off to save fuel using special lifters, and those lifters are the subject of a class action covering GM full-size trucks and SUVs. A failing lifter usually starts as a light tick at idle, then becomes a misfire and rough running under load. Caught early, the repair may only need lifters. If it is ignored, the camshaft and pushrods are often damaged too.
Guide: Why does my engine idle rough or shake at a stop?6.2L engine defect recall
GM's 25V-274 covers Tahoes whose crankshaft or connecting rods may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine failure. The dealer inspection determines whether the engine stays, with a heavier oil and new cap, or is repaired or replaced. If you hear a new rumble or knock from low in the engine, stop driving and get it towed to a dealer.
Guide: What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?Engine oil cooler line connector not fully seated
Before the first 2021 Tahoes reached customers, GM sent dealers a service bulletin to check that the engine oil cooler lines were fully seated at the quick connector on the radiator. If a line pops off, the engine can lose its oil quickly and fail. On any 2021 model, look for oil residue around the radiator connections and ask for the dealer inspection record.
Guide: Oil pressure light came on while driving: what to do right nowReduced brake assist from the vacuum pump
The engine-driven pump that supplies vacuum to the brake booster can weaken with age, so the pedal takes more effort and the Tahoe stops less quickly. GM's 19V-645 adds brake control module software, and 20V-603 covers some 2018 5.3L and 6.2L models. A loaded Tahoe with a heavy-feeling pedal is not something to put off.
Guide: Why does my brake pedal feel soft or spongy?10-speed transmission control valve and rear wheel lockup
A failed control valve inside the 10-speed can lock the rear wheels. GM's 24V-797 covers 2021 diesel models and 26V-085 covers some 2022 models with electronic range select. The fix is updated transmission software, and on diesels GM added special coverage for transmissions the software flags as defective.
Guide: Why does my car shift hard or late?Rear half shafts and suspension bolts on the new rear suspension
The 2021 move to independent rear suspension added two rear driveshafts. On some 2021 models, internal parts were not heat treated properly and can fail, cutting drive power (22V-036). On some 2023 models, the rear outer control arm bolts were not heat treated properly and can break, which throws the rear wheel out of alignment (23V-642). A clunk or a sudden pull from the rear should be checked.
Guide: What's that clunking noise when I go over bumps?Notable recalls
- 25V-274 (2021-2024 (6.2L V8)): Connecting rod or crankshaft defects can cause engine failure. Engines are inspected and either kept with an oil specification change or repaired or replaced.
- 22V-036 (2021): Rear wheel driveshaft assemblies may have internal parts that were not heat treated properly and can fail. Dealers replace the left and/or right rear driveshaft.
- 21V-064 (2021): Fuel tanks may be missing adhesive between the two layers of the tank shell, which can lead to a fuel leak. Dealers replace the tank.
- 26V-085 (2022 (10-speed with electronic range select)): The transmission control valve can fail and lock up the rear wheels. Dealers install new transmission control software.
- 23V-642 (2023): Rear suspension outer control arm bolts may not have been heat treated properly and can break. Dealers replace both bolts.
- 19V-645 (2015-2018): Brake booster vacuum can drop over time, reducing power assist. Dealers reprogram the electronic brake control module.

Maintenance that matters
| Around 5,000 miles in summer, per Oil Life System otherwise | dexos synthetic oil and filter. An L87 that passed the recall needs the oil listed on its new cap. |
| Every 7,500 miles | Tire rotation and brake check. A loaded three-row SUV wears front pads quickly in stop-and-go driving. |
| Every 22,500 miles, or yearly in Florida | Cabin air filter. With rear A/C and a big cabin, a clogged filter is noticeable in summer. |
| Every 45,000 miles | Engine air filter, and 10-speed transmission fluid if you tow, idle in long pickup lines or drive mostly short trips. |
| Every 97,500 miles | Spark plugs and coil inspection. Front and rear differential and transfer case fluid on 4WD models should be checked in the same visit. |
| Yearly on 2021 and later with Air Ride | Inspect the air springs and lines for cracks and listen for the compressor running often. Sun and heat are hard on rubber. |

Buying a used Chevrolet Tahoe
- For a 2021 and later Tahoe, the 3.0L Duramax avoids the gas V8 lifter hardware entirely and usually returns better highway fuel economy. Confirm 24V-797 is done on a 2021 diesel and ask whether the transmission was flagged for replacement.
- On a 2021-2024 6.2L High Country, verify 25V-274 has been done. The 2021 first-year models also have the most open-recall risk, so look up the VIN before you test-drive it.
- A 2015-2020 Tahoe is a solid used buy if the 5.3L idles smoothly with no tick when cold and has a history of regular oil changes. Ask whether any lifters or the camshaft have been replaced.
- 2007-2014 Tahoes are cheap, but at this age, look for rust on the frame and brake lines, A/C problems and transmission wear before you think about model-specific issues.
The Florida factor
Tahoes do a lot of idling here. Sitting in a car line with the engine running and both A/C systems on keeps the V8 in deactivation mode for long stretches with hot oil, which is hard on the lifters. Turning the engine off when you will be stopped more than a few minutes and changing oil a little early helps.
On 2021 and later models with Air Ride, the rubber air springs and plastic lines sit right where they get road heat and spray from summer storms. Cracking from heat and age shows up as a corner that sits low in the morning in your driveway. Catching one early avoids overworking the compressor.
Big SUVs often get used as hurricane evacuation vehicles, loaded to the roof and driven for hours in traffic on the Turnpike. Before the season, check tire pressures with the vehicle loaded, top up coolant and make sure the brake recalls on your year are closed.

Chevrolet Tahoe FAQ
What is the most reliable Tahoe engine?
The 3.0L Duramax diesel in 2021 and later models avoids the V8 lifter issues. Among the gas engines, a 5.3L with good maintenance records is the common choice. The 6.2L is strongest but carries the 2021-2024 recall.
Why does my Tahoe tick at idle?
On a 2015 or later V8, a tick that stays after warm-up can be a failing lifter. Have a shop check for misfire codes and inspect the valvetrain before it gets worse. Exhaust manifold leaks can also tick, which is much cheaper to fix.
Is the Tahoe air suspension expensive to fix?
One air spring is a moderate repair. Costs climb if the compressor burns out from running constantly to make up for a leak, so fix leaks early.
Can I check Tahoe recalls myself?
Yes. Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or check the Chevrolet owner site. Open safety recalls are repaired free at any Chevrolet dealer.
