BMW X5: Problems by Year, Recalls and Repair Costs

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

The six-cylinder X5 is the one to buy: an xDrive35i (2011-2018, N55) or a 2019-and-newer xDrive40i (B58). The V8 xDrive50i from 2011-2018 is the costly one, and any 2007-2013 E70 must have its Takata passenger airbag recall done before it is driven at all.

The X5 has been BMW's best-selling large SUV for two decades, and in Boca it fills the valet lines at Town Center and the lots of every private school west of I-95. It is also a very common used purchase, often a second car bought from a neighbor or off a lease return in Delray or Pompano.

What separates a good used X5 from a money pit is mostly the engine. The inline-six cars, with the N52, N55 and now B58, are the mainstream choice and the easiest for independent shops to keep running. The twin-turbo V8s, the N63 in the xDrive50i and M50i and the S63 in the X5 M, carry far higher bills, especially the 2011-2018 versions.

RepairPal rates the X5 2.0 out of 5, 13th of 19 luxury full-size SUVs, at about $1,166 a year against $1,127 for the class. Owners average 0.8 unscheduled visits a year, and 17 percent of repairs are severe, slightly below the class average of 19 percent.

BMW X5 generations

Fourth generation, G05

2019-present (G05)
sDrive40i and xDrive40i: 3.0L turbo B58 six. xDrive50i (2019-2020) and M50i (2020-2023): 4.4L twin-turbo N63 V8. xDrive45e (2021-2023) and xDrive50e (2024 on): B58 plug-in hybrids. X5 M (2020-2023): S63 V8; X5 M Competition from 2024: S68 V8 with 48-volt mild hybrid. M60i from 2024.

Production began in August 2018; the facelift entered production in March 2023 as a 2024 model. EPA rates a 2021 xDrive40i at 23 mpg combined. Many 2019-2020 build recalls.

Third generation, F15

2014-2018 (F15)
sDrive35i and xDrive35i: 3.0L turbo N55 six. xDrive50i: 4.4L N63 V8 in its first updated form (N63TU). xDrive35d: 3.0L N57 diesel six. xDrive40e (2016-2018): 2.0L turbo N20 four with an electric motor. X5 M (F85, 2015-2018): S63 V8.

Built April 2013 to July 2018. EPA rates a 2016 xDrive35i at 20 mpg combined. The 35i is the common used buy; the 40e plug-in is rare and inherits the N20's water pump recall.

Second generation, E70

2007-2013 (E70)
3.0si (2007-2008) and xDrive30i (2009-2010): 3.0L N52 six. xDrive35i (2011-2013): N55 turbo six. 4.8i and xDrive48i (2007-2010): 4.8L N62 V8. xDrive50i (2011-2013): original N63 V8. xDrive35d (2009-2013): twin-turbo diesel six. X5 M (2010-2013): S63 V8.

Facelifted as a 2011 model, which is when the turbo engines arrived. Every E70 sold or registered in Florida is in the Takata passenger inflator recalls.

Known BMW X5 problems by year

N63 V8 oil use, timing chains and heat damage

2011-2013 E70 xDrive50i; 2014-2018 F15 xDrive50i

The N63 mounts its turbos inside the V of the engine, which cooks valve stem seals, vacuum lines, coolant pipes and wiring. Expect oil consumption, blue smoke at startup after sitting, and timing chain stretch. BMW's December 2014 Customer Care Package addressed chains and other items, but not every car got every part. A pre-purchase inspection should include an oil consumption history.

Takata passenger airbag inflators, do not drive

2007-2013 E70 X5 including xDrive35d and X5 M (Florida is in Zone A)

Recall 16V-364 and its expansion 18V-030 cover the passenger frontal inflator, which can rupture after long exposure to heat and humidity. Florida-registered cars are in the highest-risk zone, and NHTSA's record tells owners not to drive until the repair is done. It is free, and dealers can arrange towing.

Electric water pump failure

2009-2018 six-cylinder X5 (N52 and N55); 2016-2018 xDrive40e (recall 24V-608)

Like the rest of BMW's sixes of this era, the X5 uses an electric coolant pump that fails abruptly. RepairPal's national estimate is about $1,093-$1,318. The 40e's N20 pump also has a wiring connector that can take on water, covered by recall.

Auxiliary water pump fire risk on V8s

2010-2011 turbocharged V8 X5 (recall 11V-521); 2011-2012 xDrive50i and X5 M (recall 18V-248)

The small electric pump that cools the turbos after shutdown can overheat its circuit board. Two campaigns replaced it. A burning electrical smell after parking a V8 X5 is a reason to check both on the VIN.

Guide: Why does my car smell like something is burning?

Front driveshaft universal joint wear

2011-2013 E70 xDrive35i, xDrive50i, X5 M and xDrive35d

Water and grit can get into the front driveshaft joint and wear it out, leaving the car without front drive and risking damage to nearby parts. Recall 17V-138 replaces the shaft. A clunk on takeoff or a vibration that changes with speed are the signs.

Oil filter housing, valve cover and oil pan leaks

2009-2018 N52 and N55 X5; 2019 and newer B58 cars at higher mileage

Six-cylinder X5s leak from the same gaskets as the 3 Series, but the heavier, taller engine bay hides drips until there is smoke at a light. An oil pan gasket on xDrive models is a big job because the front axle sits in the way.

Starter overheating on early G05

2019-2020 X5

If the starter fails, repeated cranking can overheat it and start an engine bay fire. BMW first issued a software fix under 24V-576, then a full starter replacement under 25V-644, which includes cars already updated. If the engine does not turn over on a G05, stop trying after a couple of attempts.

Notable recalls

  • 18V-030 (2007-2013 X5 xDrive30i, 35i, 48i, 50i and X5 M; 2009-2010 xDrive35d (Florida registration)): Takata passenger airbag inflators may explode due to propellant breakdown from humidity and temperature cycling. Owners are told not to drive until the module is replaced. Expands the earlier 16V-364.
  • 25V-644 (2019-2020 X5 (with 2020 X6, X7 and others)): After repeated start attempts the starter can overheat from electrical overload and ignite nearby material. Dealers replace the starter, including on cars already repaired under 24V-576. Owner letters were mailed in February 2026.
  • 17V-138 (2011-2013 X5 xDrive35i, xDrive50i, X5 M and xDrive35d): Water and debris can wear the front driveshaft universal joint until it fails, removing front-wheel drive. Dealers replace the front driveshaft. About 122,000 vehicles including X6.
  • 18V-248 (2011-2012 X5 xDrive50i and X5 M): The electric auxiliary water pump can fail and overheat its circuit board, creating a fire risk. Dealers replace the pump.
  • 24V-608 (2016-2018 X5 xDrive40e): A poorly sealed connector on the electric water pump can let water in and short circuit. Dealers inspect, replace as needed and add a shield.

Recall repairs are free at any franchised BMW dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since this list is not complete.

Maintenance that matters

Every 5,000-7,500 miles (sixes), 5,000 miles (V8s)Synthetic oil to BMW Longlife spec. On an N63, check the oil level display at every fuel fill, since older cars commonly need top-ups between changes.
Every 2 yearsBrake fluid and cabin microfilter. Inspect the tires carefully: X5s are heavy and often run staggered 20- or 21-inch tires that cannot be rotated front to rear.
40,000-60,000 milesSpark plugs and engine air filters, plus front and rear differential and transfer case fluid, which many specialists change even though BMW does not list it.
60,000-80,000 milesZF 8-speed fluid and pan, coolant, and on V8 cars a full inspection of coolant lines, vacuum lines and turbo oil feeds in the hot vee.

Confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact year and engine.

Typical BMW X5 repair costs

JobTypical cost
Synthetic oil service$150-$250
Electric water pump and thermostat$1,100-$1,600
Front brake pads only$570-$700
Oil filter housing gasket$450-$850
N63 valve stem seals$5,500-$8,000
Front driveshaft (out of recall)$900-$1,500
Set of four 20-inch run-flat tires$1,400-$2,200

Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.

Buying a used BMW X5

  • Seek a 2016-2018 xDrive35i or a 2021-and-newer xDrive40i. The N55 and B58 sixes are well understood, parts are cheap by BMW standards, and the later G05s have most of their launch recalls built in.
  • Avoid a 2011-2018 xDrive50i unless the price reflects the V8's repair list, you have records of the Customer Care Package work, and a specialist has checked oil consumption. The 2019-2020 xDrive50i and 2020-2023 M50i use a later N63 revision, but it is still a hot-running V8.
  • Do not buy any 2007-2013 E70 until the VIN shows the Takata passenger airbag recall complete. A seller who has not done it in eight years has probably skipped other maintenance too.
  • A 2019-2020 G05 is fine if the starter recall 25V-644 is closed; ask for the dealer invoice since it was only recently released.

The Florida factor

An X5 waiting in the afternoon pickup line at a west Boca school, engine running for the A/C, is about as hard as an SUV ever works its cooling system. V8 cars suffer most, because the turbos sit in the engine valley and heat soaks the surrounding rubber after shutdown. Let a V8 idle for 30 seconds before switching off after a highway run on I-95 in August.

For E70 owners the Florida factor is not abstract. The Takata passenger inflator recalls name Florida in the highest-risk zone because heat and humidity degrade the propellant. If you have inherited or bought an older X5, check the recall today, and do not let a teenager drive it in the meantime.

X5s often spend June to November parked in snowbird garages. The xDrive40e and 45e hybrids need their high-voltage battery kept at a moderate charge rather than full, and every X5 benefits from a battery maintainer and a check of tire date codes, since big 20-inch tires age out in Florida sun long before they wear out.

BMW X5 FAQ

What is the most reliable BMW X5 engine?

For used buyers, the six-cylinders: the N55 in 2011-2018 xDrive35i models and the B58 in 2019-and-newer xDrive40i models. The V8s have far more expensive failure points.

Is it safe to drive a 2008 X5 with an open airbag recall?

No. NHTSA's recall record for 18V-030 advises owners not to drive until the passenger airbag module is replaced. The repair is free and BMW dealers can arrange transport.

Why does my X5 use oil between changes?

If it is a V8 xDrive50i, oil consumption is a known trait of the N63 caused by heat-hardened valve stem seals and other wear. On a six-cylinder, oil loss is usually an external leak from the oil filter housing or valve cover gasket.

Can an independent shop work on a G05 X5?

Yes for brakes, oil, tires, suspension and most repairs, if it has BMW-level diagnostic software. Recalls and software campaigns, like the starter fix, must go to a BMW dealer and are free.

Guides for BMW X5 owners

Blue smoke from the exhaust: is my car burning oil?
Yes. Blue or blue-gray smoke with a burnt, acrid smell means motor oil is getting into the combustion chambers and burning. When it appears tells you a lot: a puff right after startup usually points to valve stem seals, smoke under hard acceleration points to piston rings, and a sudden cloud on a turbocharged car can be a failing turbo seal.
Engine overheating: what to do right now, and what causes it
Pull over as soon as it is safe, turn the A/C off, and shut the engine down if the gauge stays in the red. Do not open the radiator cap while it is hot. Low coolant from a leak is the most common cause, followed by a stuck thermostat, a dead radiator fan or a failing water pump. Driving on an overheating engine can warp the cylinder head in minutes.
Oil leaking under my car: where is it coming from?
Dark brown or black drips under the front half of the car are almost always engine oil, and the most common sources are a loose drain plug or filter, a hardened valve cover gasket, or a leaking oil pan gasket. A few drops a day is a slow seep you can plan around, while a puddle the size of a dinner plate overnight needs attention this week. The key is to keep the dipstick above the low mark while you get it fixed.
Car won't start and just clicks: what the click is telling you
Rapid clicking almost always means the battery cannot deliver enough current, usually from low charge or a loose, corroded terminal. A single loud click with bright dash lights points more toward the starter motor, its solenoid, or the cable feeding it. A jump start is the fastest way to tell the two apart.
What should a pre-purchase inspection check on a used car?
A proper pre-purchase inspection puts the car on a lift and checks the engine, transmission, brakes, tires, suspension, frame, A/C and electronics, plus a scan for stored and recently cleared trouble codes. Expect to pay about $100-$250 at an independent shop and more for European or exotic models, which is small next to the repair bills it can expose.
How do I prepare my car for a hurricane in Florida?
Keep at least half a tank of fuel (or 50-80% charge on an EV) all season, photograph the car and its documents, confirm you carry comprehensive coverage, and park on the highest ground you can reach away from trees. Do the mechanical checks, like tires, wipers and battery, before a cone appears on the map, because shops and parts stores fill up fast.
