Subaru Outback: Problems by Year, Recalls and Repair Costs

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

The Outback's weak spots are tied to specific years. The 2010-2012 2.5i has the old EJ25 head gasket engine, 2013-2014 cars had an oil consumption program, early CVTs got a 10-year warranty extension that has now run out, and 2015-2020 cars were part of a battery drain settlement. A 2016-2019 2.5i or 3.6R with records, or a 2021-2025 car with recalls closed, is the safer buy.

The Outback is a tall wagon rather than a true SUV, and that shape suits South Florida better than its outdoorsy marketing suggests. Recent generations have 8.7 inches of ground clearance, 9.5 on the Wilderness, and every one sold here has all-wheel drive. RepairPal rates it 3.5 out of 5, tenth of 26 midsize SUVs, with average yearly repair and maintenance costs around $607.

The engine story has three chapters. Through 2012 the 2.5i used the EJ25. From 2013 it switched to the FB25, which had early oil-use complaints, and a 3.6-liter flat-six (the 3.6R) was offered through 2019. From 2020 the choice became a direct-injected 2.5-liter or the 2.4-liter turbo in XT models, and the 2026 redesign kept both.

The transmission story is simpler. Almost every Outback since 2010 has a Lineartronic CVT, and the 3.6R joined it in 2015 after using a 5-speed automatic before that. Subaru extended the warranty on many early CVTs, and later cars have had software recalls, so CVT history is the first thing to ask about on any used Outback.

Subaru Outback generations

Seventh generation (BU)

2026-present
2.5-liter flat-four, about 180 hp. XT and Wilderness: 2.4-liter turbo flat-four, 260 hp. CVT and AWD on all.

Revealed in April 2025 and on sale in North America that August. Too new for a reliability record.

Sixth generation (BT)

2020-2025
2.5-liter direct-injected FB25, about 182 hp, EPA 28-29 mpg combined. XT: 2.4-liter turbo FA24, 260 hp, about 25-26 mpg. CVT on all.

Wilderness trim added for 2022. Refreshed for 2023 with a new front end and updated infotainment. Covered by several transmission control and airbag sensor recalls.

Fifth generation (BS)

2015-2019
2.5-liter FB25, EPA 28 mpg combined. 3.6R: 3.6-liter EZ36 flat-six, 256 hp, EPA 22 mpg. CVT on both.

Larger and more crossover-like than before. The 3.6R is the smooth, quiet choice and avoids the four-cylinder's oil-use history.

Fourth generation (BR)

2010-2014
2.5i: EJ25 for 2010-2012, FB25 for 2013-2014, with CVT or 6-speed manual. 3.6R: 3.6-liter flat-six with a 5-speed automatic.

First Outback with a CVT. Refreshed for 2013. The cheapest Outbacks on the market, and the ones with the most documented engine and transmission history.

Known Subaru Outback problems by year

EJ25 head gasket seepage on the last old-design engine

2010-2012 Outback 2.5i

These were the final Outbacks with the EJ25, the engine behind Subaru's head gasket reputation. RepairPal lists cooling system problems causing head gasket failure among the Outback's top complaints. A slow coolant drop with no visible puddle, a sweet smell after parking, or oily crust on the lower edges of the cylinder heads are the clues. A shop can run a combustion leak test for about the cost of an oil change, which is cheap protection before buying one.

Excess oil consumption on the first FB25 cars

2013-2014 Outback 2.5i

Subaru bulletin 02-157-14R extended powertrain coverage for excessive oil consumption on 2013-2014 Outbacks with the 2.5-liter FB engine to 8 years or 100,000 miles, after an inspection and oil consumption test. That coverage has expired on nearly all of them. A car that was repaired under the program is often the better buy; ask for the paperwork.

Early Lineartronic CVT failures

2010-2015 Outback 2.5i, 2015 Outback 3.6R

Subaru bulletin 16-107-17R doubled the CVT powertrain coverage on these cars to 10 years or 100,000 miles. Judder pulling away from a stop, whine and hesitation are the complaints shops hear most on these units. With the extension now over, an out-of-warranty CVT is a $5,000-plus job, so test-drive slowly from a stop several times and on a gentle incline.

Battery that keeps going flat

2015-2020 Outback

A class settlement covering 2015-2020 Outbacks, along with other Subarus, centered on claims that the vehicle's control network did not fully go to sleep after shutoff, draining the 12-volt battery again and again. The settlement added battery coverage and reimbursements, with dealer testing deciding eligibility. If an Outback from these years kills batteries, have a dealer check for software updates and test for parasitic drain before buying another battery.

Transmission control software that can damage the CVT

2020 Outback (recall 21V-955); 2020-2021 Outback (recall 22V-485)

A programming error in the transmission control unit could let a clutch engage before the drive chain was fully clamped, so the chain could slip and break and the car would lose drive. Dealers reprogram the unit, read its data for signs of chain slip and inspect the chain guide. If they find slippage or damage, the transmission is replaced free.

Water in the inhibitor switch

2021-2023 Outback (recall 23V-755)

A poor weld can let water into the inhibitor switch, which tells the car which gear is selected. When it fails, the reverse lights and the rearview camera may stop working. Florida's afternoon downpours and car washes are exactly the conditions that find this weakness. The dealer replaces the switch free.

Takata passenger airbag inflators

2010-2014 Outback (recalls 19V-007, 20V-001 and others)

Several waves of Takata recalls cover Outbacks through 2014, with Florida in the first group. Recall 20V-001 is notable because it covers cars that already had their inflator replaced once with a part of the same design, so a car with one completed Takata repair may still need another.

Notable recalls

  • 20V-001 (2003-2014 Outback sold or registered in Florida and other Zone A states): Passenger inflators that were already replaced with the same design are replaced again with an alternate inflator.
  • 16V-292 (2016-2017 Outback built February 29 to May 6, 2016): Improperly machined steering column could disconnect steering. Owners were told not to drive until the column lot was inspected.
  • 21V-587 (2018-2020 Outback): Low-pressure fuel pump inside the tank may fail and stall the engine. Pump replaced free.
  • 22V-485 (2020-2021 Outback): Transmission control unit programming error could let a clutch engage before the drive chain is clamped. Software reprogram.
  • 23V-755 (2021-2023 Outback): Water entering the inhibitor switch can disable the reverse lights and rearview camera. Switch replaced free.
  • 24V-227 (2020-2022 Outback): A capacitor in the passenger occupant detection sensors may crack and short, so the front passenger airbag may not deploy.

Recall repairs are free at any franchised Subaru dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since this list is not complete.

Maintenance that matters

Every 6,000 miles or 6 monthsSynthetic oil and filter, tire rotation. On 2013-2014 cars, check the dipstick every few fill-ups between changes.
Every 30,000 milesBrake fluid, engine air filter, cabin filter, and a check of the front and rear differential oil.
Around 60,000 milesCVT fluid drain-and-fill using Subaru's fluid, and spark plugs on 2.5-liter engines. Turbo XT models have their own plug interval in the owner's manual.
Around 105,000 miles, 2010-2012 2.5i onlyTiming belt, water pump and idler pulleys on the EJ25. Later engines use a timing chain.
Each spring, before storm seasonCheck wiper blades and the battery, and clear leaves from the cowl area below the windshield so rainwater drains away instead of pooling.

Front wheel bearing and hub$350-$650
Combustion leak or cooling system pressure test$60-$150

Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.

Buying a used Subaru Outback

  • Best value: 2016-2019 Outback 3.6R. The flat-six avoids the four-cylinder's oil-use history and the head gasket design of the EJ25, and it shifts smoothly with the CVT. Confirm the 16V-292 steering column check on 2016-2017 builds and look for battery drain complaints.
  • Good everyday buy: 2015-2019 2.5i with documented CVT fluid service. It returns about 28 mpg and is the most common used Outback, so prices stay reasonable.
  • Shop 2010-2014 carefully. The 2010-2012 2.5i needs a head gasket and timing belt check, 2013-2014 cars need an oil-use history, and all of them should have proof of Takata repairs and some CVT history.
  • For a newer car, a 2022-2025 is better than a 2020-2021. The 2020-2021 cars carry the most transmission software and airbag sensor recalls; once those are done they are fine, but the later cars had more of those fixes built in.

The Florida factor

The Outback's ground clearance is a real asset when afternoon storms flood the swales and low streets in west Boca, but it is not a license to drive through water. If water reaches the engine's air intake, the engine can hydrolock in an instant. After any deep-water drive, have the differential oil checked for a milky look, a sign that water got in.

Boca owners often use an Outback for beach and boat trips. Sand and salt get into the rear hatch seals, the wheel bearings and the brake calipers. Rinsing the wheels and underbody after a day at South Inlet Park or Spanish River costs nothing and slows the corrosion that sticks calipers and seizes brake hardware.

Battery drain gets worse in heat. A 12-volt battery that is already being nibbled by a module that will not sleep fails sooner in a 95-degree garage. If you leave for the summer, a battery maintainer is the simplest insurance on any 2015-2020 Outback.

Subaru Outback FAQ

What years of Subaru Outback should I avoid?

Be most cautious with 2010-2014. The 2010-2012 2.5i has the old EJ25 head gaskets, 2013-2014 cars had an oil consumption program, and their CVTs relied on a warranty extension that has expired. They can still be good cars with the right records.

Is the Subaru CVT warranty still active?

For almost every car, no. Bulletin 16-107-17R extended coverage to 10 years or 100,000 miles on 2010-2015 cars, so even a 2015 is now past the 10-year mark. Newer cars are covered by the normal 5-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Which is better, the 2.5 or the XT turbo?

For flat Boca roads, the 2.5-liter is plenty and gets better mileage. The 2.4-liter turbo in XT models makes 260 hp and is better for highway passing and towing, but it uses more fuel and wants on-time oil changes.

Why does my Outback battery keep dying?

On 2015-2020 Outbacks, a known cause is modules that keep drawing power after the car is off. Ask a Subaru dealer for a parasitic drain test and any pending software updates, and check whether settlement battery coverage still applies to your car.

Guides for Subaru Outback owners

Why does my CVT shudder or whine?
A CVT that shudders when pulling away or whines louder as you speed up usually has worn fluid, outdated control software, or wear on the belt, pulleys or bearings inside. Get the fluid and software checked first, and look up your VIN for extended CVT warranties, because several automakers have paid for these repairs well past the normal warranty.
Why does my car battery keep dying? Finding the real cause
A battery that keeps going flat has one of three problems: it is worn out and cannot hold a charge, something is drawing power while the car is off, or the alternator is not refilling it while you drive. A free battery and charging test rules out the first and third, and a parasitic draw test with a meter finds the second.
Blue smoke from the exhaust: is my car burning oil?
Yes. Blue or blue-gray smoke with a burnt, acrid smell means motor oil is getting into the combustion chambers and burning. When it appears tells you a lot: a puff right after startup usually points to valve stem seals, smoke under hard acceleration points to piston rings, and a sudden cloud on a turbocharged car can be a failing turbo seal.
Engine overheating: what to do right now, and what causes it
Pull over as soon as it is safe, turn the A/C off, and shut the engine down if the gauge stays in the red. Do not open the radiator cap while it is hot. Low coolant from a leak is the most common cause, followed by a stuck thermostat, a dead radiator fan or a failing water pump. Driving on an overheating engine can warp the cylinder head in minutes.
Does salt air near the beach rust your car, and how do you stop it?
Yes. Salt carried on ocean air settles on the car, absorbs moisture from Florida humidity and speeds up corrosion wherever bare metal is exposed. Regular fresh-water rinses including the underside, sealing stone chips quickly and keeping drain holes clear prevent most of it. Catching a rust bubble early costs a few hundred dollars, while letting it spread can mean $1,000 or more per panel.
How to tell if a car has flood damage, and what to do if yours got flooded
The surest signs of flood damage are in places sellers rarely clean: fine silt or a waterline under the seats, in the spare tire well and behind the dash, rust on seat rails and screws under the carpet, and a musty smell masked by heavy air freshener. Run the VIN through NMVTIS and the Florida title check, and never buy a used car in South Florida after a storm season without an independent inspection.
