The Lexus RX is one of the safest used luxury SUV bets in Boca Raton, but each generation has a short list to check. On 2010-2013 cars, watch the A/C amplifier. On 2017-2020 V6 models, confirm the fuel pump recall. On 2020-2021 cars, confirm the passenger airbag sensor recall. The 2023 and later turbo four-cylinder RX is too new to have a long track record.
The RX has been the default midsize luxury crossover in South Florida for more than two decades, so the used market here is deep. RepairPal rates the RX 350 at 4.0 out of 5, third of 14 luxury midsize SUVs, with an average yearly repair and maintenance bill near $550. The RX 450h hybrid scores the same 4.0 and ranks first in the class, at about $540 a year.
The big dividing line is 2023. Every RX from 2010 through 2022 sold here used a 3.5-liter V6, either alone or as part of the RX 450h hybrid system. The fifth generation dropped the V6 entirely and moved to four-cylinder engines: a 2.4-liter turbo in the RX 350, a 2.5-liter hybrid in the RX 350h, and a turbo hybrid in the RX 500h. That changes which repairs you are likely to face, and it changes the used-car math.
The V6 cars have no single famous weak point. Their problems are smaller items, such as A/C electronics, brake actuators and fuel pumps, and many were handled by recall. That makes a VIN recall check the most valuable thing you can do before buying any RX.
Lexus RX generations
Fifth generation (ALA10/ALH10)
2023-presentGA-K platform, five seats only; the three-row RX L was replaced by the Lexus TX. The RX 350h is the efficiency pick at an EPA 36 mpg combined.
Fourth generation (AL20)
2016-2022Refreshed for 2020 with a 12.3-inch screen as standard and Lexus Safety System+ 2.0. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto arrived for 2021. Because the V6 also has port injection, it avoids the intake carbon problem of older direct-injection Lexus engines.
Third generation (AL10)
2010-2015Introduced Remote Touch and electric power steering. Refreshed for 2013 with new lights and the first F Sport. J.D. Power named the RX the most dependable U.S. vehicle in 2013.
Known Lexus RX problems by year
A/C amplifier failure
The A/C amplifier is the control module for the climate system. When it fails, the A/C light flashes, an error message appears, or the system stops cooling even with a full refrigerant charge. RepairPal owner reports put the average failure near 83,000 miles. A revised part exists, so the fix is a new module, not a recharge.
Guide: Why is my car A/C blowing warm air?Brake actuator faults and stability warning lights
The brake actuator controls pressure at each wheel for ABS, traction and stability control. On 2012-2013 cars, an electrical part inside it could develop high resistance and trigger several warning lights at once. On some 2016 cars, a damaged o-ring could upset pressure control during ABS or stability control events. Both were free dealer repairs. On any RX, a cluster of ABS, VSC and brake lights together points to the actuator or its wiring before pads or sensors.
Guide: ABS light on: is it safe to drive, and what causes it?Low-pressure fuel pump that can quit
The Denso pump inside the tank can fail, which shows up as rough running, a check engine light, hesitation, or a stall that may not restart. Toyota recalled millions of vehicles across both brands in several waves, and a smaller 2025 campaign caught additional 2019 RX 350L builds. If an RX from these years has ever stalled, check the VIN before paying for any fuel diagnosis.
Guide: Check engine light on but the car drives fine: what does it mean?Front passenger airbag occupant sensor
The occupant classification sensor in the passenger seat tells the airbag whether an adult is sitting there. A short circuit in it can keep the passenger airbag from deploying. The giveaway is a passenger airbag off indicator lit with an adult in the seat. The remedy is a free sensor replacement at a dealer, and it applies across many Toyota and Lexus models from the same years.
Airbag sensor and knee airbag defects on early fourth-generation cars
Two separate 2016 problems. Some cars built from mid-November to late December 2015 had a poorly welded driver knee airbag inflator that could leak. A larger group had sensors that might not trigger the front, side or curtain airbags in a crash. Both fixes are free, and any 2016 RX should have both on its record.
Early fifth-generation software and wiring recalls
The new generation has had no major engine recall so far, but it has a string of electrical ones: a weak weld in the steering column spiral cable that can disconnect the driver airbag, a rearview camera that may not display, and on 2025 cars an instrument panel that may not show speed or warning lights at startup. All are dealer fixes, most of them software.
Notable recalls
- 23V-865 (2020-2021 RX 350 and RX 450h): Occupant classification sensor in the front passenger seat can short circuit and prevent the passenger airbag from deploying. Sensor replaced free.
- 20V-682 (2017 and 2019-2020 RX 350, 2018-2020 RX 350L): Expansion of the low-pressure fuel pump recall. The in-tank pump can fail and stall the engine. Pump replaced free.
- 18V-085 (2016 RX 350 and RX 450h): Airbag pressure or acceleration sensors may fail, so front, side or curtain airbags may not deploy in a crash.
- 14V-054 (2012-2013 RX 350): An electrical component inside the brake actuator can develop increased resistance, lighting multiple warning lamps and affecting brake control functions.
- 23V-480 (2023 RX 350, RX 350h and RX 500h): An insufficiently welded connection in the steering column spiral cable can separate and deactivate the driver airbag.
- 26V-162 (2023-2026 RX 350): The rearview camera image may not appear when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. Dealers update the camera software or replace the camera.
Recall repairs are free at any franchised Lexus dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since this list is not complete.
Maintenance that matters
| Every 5,000 miles | Rotate tires. RX models on 20-inch wheels wear their front shoulders fast if rotations slip, and the tires are expensive. |
| Every 10,000 miles or 12 months | Synthetic oil and filter in the viscosity printed under the hood. On a turbo RX 350 from 2023 on, do not stretch this interval; turbo bearings depend on clean oil. |
| Every 30,000 miles | Engine air filter and brake fluid inspection. On the RX 450h and RX 350h, check the hybrid battery cooling intake in the cabin and clear any lint or debris. |
| Around 60,000 miles | Ask for a transmission fluid condition check on V6 cars driven mostly in traffic, and an inspection of the drive belt, hoses and water pump weep area. |
| Around 120,000 miles | Spark plugs on the 3.5-liter V6. The rear bank sits under the intake, so this is a long labor job worth bundling with other work. |
Confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact year and engine.
Typical Lexus RX repair costs
| Job | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Synthetic oil and filter service | $95-$160 | Dealer visits with an inspection and car wash run toward the top. |
| A/C amplifier replacement, 2010-2013 RX 350 | $350-$750 | Includes diagnosis; RepairPal lists A/C diagnosis alone at roughly $150-$225. |
| Water pump, 3.5-liter V6 | $950-$1,450 | RepairPal's national estimate is about $1,020-$1,340 before tax. |
| Front pads and rotors | $450-$800 | |
| Spark plugs, V6 | $400-$700 | |
| A/C compressor | $1,500-$2,600 | |
| Hybrid battery, RX 450h | $3,500-$6,500 | New genuine packs at the top; reconditioned packs well below, with shorter warranties. |
Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.
Buying a used Lexus RX
- Best value: a 2013-2015 RX 350 with service records. It has the refreshed styling, the proven 2GR-FE V6, and fewer open campaigns than the 2010-2012 cars. Test the A/C at full cold for at least ten minutes and watch for a flashing A/C button.
- Best overall used RX: 2020-2022, with the refreshed cabin, the larger screen and, from 2021, smartphone mirroring. Confirm the 23V-865 occupant sensor recall on 2020-2021 cars and the fuel pump recall on any 2017-2020 RX 350 or RX 350L.
- Approach 2016 cars with a recall checklist in hand: knee airbag, airbag sensors and, on some RX 350s, the ABS actuator o-ring. A 2016 with all three closed is a good car; one with any open is a dealer visit before purchase.
- The 2023 and later RX is a different vehicle underneath. It is efficient and comfortable, but the turbo four and the RX 500h powertrain have years less real-world history than the V6. If you buy one, keep it inside the 4-year or 50,000-mile basic warranty window and use the dealer for all recall work.
The Florida factor
The RX's big glass area and the optional panoramic roof turn the cabin into an oven in an open lot along Glades Road. That load falls on the A/C, and on 2010-2013 cars the amplifier is the part that tends to give out. Pre-cooling with the windows cracked for a minute, and parking nose away from the afternoon sun, takes measurable strain off the system.
The RX 450h and RX 350h keep their gasoline engines off at stoplights and in slow traffic, which is a real advantage on Federal Highway at rush hour or in an I-95 evacuation backup: the A/C keeps running from the hybrid battery while the engine rests. Keep the battery cooling vent clear, because a hybrid pack that cannot shed heat in August will lose capacity faster.
Many RXs in Boca are second cars for seasonal residents and sit for months. Before you leave, fill the tank, connect a battery maintainer and add a few psi to the tires. When you return, run the VIN for recalls issued while the car sat; Lexus releases campaigns several times a year.

Lexus RX FAQ
Which Lexus RX years are the most reliable?
The 2013-2015 and 2020-2022 RX 350 are the strongest used picks, with the V6 well proven and most recalls long since done. The RX 450h hybrid from the same years is equally durable and ranks first in its class on RepairPal.
Does the 2023 RX still have a V6?
No. From 2023 the RX 350 uses a 2.4-liter turbo four, the RX 350h a 2.5-liter hybrid, and the RX 500h a turbo hybrid. If you want the V6, shop 2022 or earlier.
Is the RX 450h worth it over the RX 350?
For mostly local driving, usually yes. The EPA rates the 2016-2022 RX 450h at about 30 mpg combined against about 22 for the RX 350, and its brakes last longer. The trade-off is a possible hybrid battery replacement on high-mileage cars.
My RX's A/C button is flashing. Is that low refrigerant?
On 2010-2013 RX 350s, a flashing A/C indicator is more often a failed A/C amplifier than low refrigerant. Ask the shop to scan the climate control codes before recharging anything.
