The VW Atlas has had an unusually long recall list for a family SUV. The ones that matter most are the connecting rod bearing campaigns that can lead to engine failure (22V-753 for 2022-2023 and 23V-593 for 2024 2.0T models), passenger air bag sensor and door wiring recalls, and a steering rack bolt that can corrode on 2018-2019 models. Out of warranty, the 2.0T's water pump and thermostat housing is the most common big repair.
The Atlas is Volkswagen's three-row SUV, built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and sized for American families. It is one of the most common Volkswagens in Palm Beach County, and many local examples are 2019-2022 models now leaving their original warranty and lease terms. The two-row Atlas Cross Sport shares nearly everything mechanical with it, and most recalls cover both.
Two engines powered the first generation for most of its run: a 2.0-liter turbo four and a 3.6-liter VR6, each with an 8-speed automatic. For 2024 the VR6 was dropped and a stronger 2.0-liter turbo became the only engine. The second-generation Atlas arrives as a 2027 model.
One note on the 2024 engine recall that many owners search for: NHTSA files campaign 23V-593 under engine and engine cooling, but the defect itself is damaged connecting rod bearings, not a coolant leak. The fix is an inspection and, if needed, a replacement engine at no cost.
Volkswagen Atlas generations
Second generation
2027-presentRevealed in March 2026 and still built in Chattanooga. A second-generation Atlas Cross Sport followed. Too new for any meaningful repair history.
First generation, 2024 refresh
2024-2026New front and rear styling, electronic shift-by-wire selector, 12-inch touchscreen and digital gauges. Certain 2024 models are in recall 23V-593 for connecting rod bearings.
First generation
2018-2023Refreshed for 2021 with a new nose based on the Cross Sport. The Atlas Cross Sport two-row version launched for 2020. 2022-2023 2.0T models are in recall 22V-753.
Known Volkswagen Atlas problems by year
Connecting rod bearing damage and engine failure
Both campaigns cover 2.0-liter turbo engines whose connecting rod bearings may be damaged, which can lead to engine failure, a stall in traffic and possibly an oil leak fire. The 2022 campaign also covered 2021-2023 Audi Q5s with the same engine family. Signs are a deep knock from the bottom of the engine, low oil pressure warnings or metal in the oil. The dealer inspects and replaces the engine if needed.
Guide: What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?Passenger air bag turns itself off with someone in the seat
Two recalls, 23V-215 and 24V-464, cover a wiring fault in the passenger occupant detection system that can deactivate the front passenger air bag even when an adult is sitting there. Watch the 'passenger air bag off' indicator with an adult in the seat. The remedy is a new sensor mat and wiring harness. Out of warranty, a PODS mat would cost $700-$1,200.
Guide: What should a pre-purchase inspection check on a used car?A/C drain tube soaks the air bag control module
Recall 18V-537 covers 2018 Atlases built with a twisted A/C drain tube that sends condensate onto the air bag control module, which can cause an unintended deployment. Dealers inspect the tube and replace it along with the module if needed. Any 2018 Atlas with a damp front floor or an air bag light needs this checked first.
Guide: Water leaking inside the car on the passenger floor when the A/C is onSteering knuckle and steering rack bolt failures
Recalls 20V-712 and 21V-026 address front steering knuckles that were damaged in production or could fracture near the strut mount. Recall 26V-590, filed in September 2026, replaces a right-side steering rack mounting bolt that can corrode and break. Clunks on turns or sudden steering play mean stop driving and arrange a tow.
Guide: What's that clunking noise when I go over bumps?Water pump and thermostat housing leaks on the 2.0T
On every EA888 engine the plastic thermostat housing and coolant pump sit under the intake manifold, and they are a well-known leak point. A sweet smell after parking, pink crust on the engine, or a coolant reservoir that slowly drops are the signs. RepairPal estimates $1,218-$1,453 for a water pump and $938-$1,018 for a thermostat on the Atlas nationally; South Florida independents land near those numbers, and doing both together saves labor.
Guide: Sweet smell from my car, like maple syrup: is it a coolant leak?Rear coil springs can fracture
Under recall 18V-904, rear coil springs may break prematurely, and a broken spring can cut into the rear tire. A sudden lean at one rear corner or a loud bang over a bump on an early Atlas is the sign. The remedy is free; out of warranty, a pair of rear springs costs $350-$600 installed.
Guide: What's that clunking noise when I go over bumps?Fuel tank and fuel delivery leaks on early builds
Three early recalls covered fuel leaks: 17V-766 for tanks with insufficient wall thickness, 18V-284 for a manufacturing error in the tank, and 19V-614 for a suction jet welded in the wrong position, which could also cause stalling. A gasoline smell around the rear of a 2018-2019 Atlas is worth a VIN check before anything else.

- 23V-593 (2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport): Engine connecting rod bearings may be damaged, which can cause engine failure, a stall and possible oil leak fire. NHTSA lists it under engine and engine cooling. Dealers inspect and replace the engine if necessary.
- 22V-753 (2022-2023 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport): The same connecting rod bearing defect on the earlier 2.0T, shared with 2021-2023 Audi Q5 models. Inspection and engine replacement as needed.
- 24V-464 (2021-2024 Atlas and 2020-2024 Atlas Cross Sport): A wiring fault in the passenger occupant detection system can turn off the front passenger air bag with the seat occupied. Dealers replace the sensor mat and harness. Recall 23V-215 covers 2018-2021 Atlas and 2020 Cross Sport.
- 22V-152 (2019-2023 Atlas and 2020-2023 Atlas Cross Sport): Corroding contacts in the front door wiring harness can delay side air bag deployment. Dealers secure or replace harnesses that show a fault code.
- 26V-590 (2018-2019 Atlas): A steering rack mounting bolt can corrode and break, which can crack the steering rack housing. Owner letters are scheduled for November 2026.
- 25V-081 (2025 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport): A small number of transmissions were manufactured incorrectly and can lose drive power. Dealers replace the transmission.
Recall repairs are free at any franchised Volkswagen dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since this list is not complete.
Maintenance that matters
| Every 10,000 miles or 1 year | Synthetic oil to the VW specification for your engine and a new filter, plus a tire rotation. On a 2022-2024 2.0T, listen at cold start for any bottom-end knock and check the oil level between services. |
| Every 20,000 miles | Cabin filter. Look under the passenger footwell carpet edge for dampness at the same time, a quick check for A/C drain problems. |
| Every 40,000 miles | Spark plugs on the 2.0T, engine air filter, and on 4MOTION models the all-wheel-drive coupling fluid and filter. |
| About every 60,000 miles | 8-speed automatic fluid service. Check the booklet; with towing, heat and stop-and-go use, many specialists change it around this mileage. |
| Brake fluid every 2-3 years | Time-based, per the booklet. The Atlas is heavy, and fresh fluid matters on repeated stops. |
Confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact year and engine.
Typical Volkswagen Atlas repair costs
| Job | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Water pump replacement, 2.0T | $1,200-$1,500 | RepairPal national estimate $1,218-$1,453; 2024 and newer models run lower. |
| Thermostat housing replacement | $950-$1,050 | RepairPal lists $938-$1,018 for 2018-2023 models. |
| Synthetic oil service | $110-$190 | Independent shop. |
| Front brake pads and rotors | $500-$800 | Heavier than most VWs, so brakes wear faster in stop-and-go use. |
| 4MOTION coupling fluid service | $150-$280 | Often missed on used examples. |
| Rear coil springs, pair | $350-$600 | Free on 2018-2019 models under recall 18V-904. |
| Diagnostic scan with VW software | $110-$190 | Air bag and module faults need a VW-capable tool. |
Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.
Buying a used Volkswagen Atlas
- Look for a 2021-2023 Atlas with the VR6 or a 2021 2.0T if you want to stay away from the connecting rod bearing campaigns, and confirm the passenger air bag sensor and door wiring recalls are complete. The 2021 refresh also brought 4MOTION to the 2.0T.
- A 2022-2024 2.0T Atlas is fine to buy if the dealer's VIN printout shows recall 22V-753 or 23V-593 completed. Ask whether the engine was inspected or replaced; a replaced engine with dealer paperwork is not a negative.
- Treat a 2018-2019 Atlas as a recall checklist: fuel tank, rear springs, A/C drain tube on 2018 models, passenger air bag sensor, door wiring and the 2026 steering rack bolt. Every one is free, but parts for the newest campaign may take time.
- For a 2025-2026 Atlas, confirm the transmission recall 25V-081 does not apply and that software updates for the rearview camera campaigns are done.
The Florida factor
Many of the Atlas recalls involve corrosion or water: door harness contacts, the steering rack bolt, a misrouted A/C drain on early cars. Those failures develop fastest in coastal air. Owners near the Intracoastal or A1A should rinse the underbody and wheel wells after beach trips and keep lawn sprinklers off the driveway where the SUV parks every night.
An Atlas in a Florida summer runs its big A/C system for hours a day, and the evaporator drains a lot of water. If the front carpet ever feels damp, do not wait. Wet floor modules and wiring are expensive, and on a 2018 model the drain tube recall exists precisely because that water reached the air bag computer.
Hurricane season matters for an SUV families use to evacuate. Before June 1, confirm open recalls are closed, especially the engine bearing and steering campaigns, and check the coolant level and battery. A breakdown on a crowded I-95 or Florida's Turnpike during an evacuation is the worst place to find a known defect.

Volkswagen Atlas FAQ
What is recall 23V-593 on the 2024 Atlas?
It covers certain 2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models whose engine connecting rod bearings may be damaged, which can cause engine failure. NHTSA lists it under engine and engine cooling, but it is a bearing problem, not a cooling problem. Dealers inspect the engine and replace it if needed, free.
Is the VR6 or the 2.0T more reliable in the Atlas?
The 3.6 VR6 in 2018-2023 models has avoided the connecting rod bearing recalls that hit 2022-2024 2.0T engines, though it uses more fuel. The 2.0T is more efficient, and once its recall work is done it is a reasonable choice.
Why does my Atlas say passenger air bag off with an adult in the seat?
That is the symptom of the occupant detection wiring fault covered by recalls 23V-215 and 24V-464. Check your VIN and schedule the free repair.
What gas mileage does an Atlas get?
EPA rates the 2023 Atlas 4MOTION at 22 mpg combined with the 2.0T and 20 mpg combined with the VR6, both on regular fuel.
