Tesla Model Y: Problems by Year, Recalls and Repair Costs

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

The Model Y's real-world problems are early build quality, suspension fasteners and the electronic doors, not the battery or motors. The 2020-2022 cars had the most suspension and fastener recalls, 2021 cars are under an NHTSA review of doors that would not open with low voltage, and 2023-2025 cars had camera and computer software recalls. Learn the manual door releases before anything else.

The Model Y became the world's best-selling vehicle in 2023, and in Boca it has largely replaced the minivan for young families and the second car for retirees. It shares about three quarters of its parts with the Model 3, but it is taller, heavier and carries more people, which shifts the wear toward tires, suspension and the rear hatch.

It was Tesla's first car with a heat pump from day one, and its single-piece castings simplified the body. The trade-off in the first years was a series of recalls for fasteners and parts that were not properly secured at the factory. Production in Texas from late 2021 also added versions with the newer 4680 battery cells.

A refreshed Model Y, internally called Juniper, went on sale in the U.S. in March 2025 with full-width lights and a rear-seat screen. Like other Teslas, many of its recalls are software updates sent over the air, and those count in NHTSA's records just like a service visit would.

Tesla Model Y generations

Juniper refresh

2025-present
Long Range AWD dual motor (sold as Premium from October 2025, EPA about 327 miles for 2026), Long Range RWD (about 357 miles), Performance AWD (about 306 miles), and from October 2025 the lower-priced Model Y Standard in RWD and AWD (about 294-321 miles).

Full-width light bars and a rear touchscreen. Unlike the refreshed Model 3, it keeps a turn signal stalk. The six-seat, long-wheelbase Model Y L launched in the U.S. in July 2026.

Original Model Y

2020-2024
Long Range AWD (about 316-330 miles), Performance AWD (about 279-315 miles), a short-lived 2021 Standard Range RWD (244 miles), a Texas-built AWD with 4680 cells (2022-2023, 279 miles), and a single-motor RWD (2023-2024, 260 miles). A Long Range RWD arrived in 2024.

Heat pump and octovalve standard. Optional third-row seating from January 2021. Radar dropped from May 2021 builds and ultrasonic parking sensors from October 2022.

Known Tesla Model Y problems by year

Doors that will not open when the low-voltage supply sags

2021 Model Y (NHTSA preliminary evaluation, September 2025)

NHTSA opened a review of about 174,000 2021 Model Ys after nine reports of parents unable to reopen a door to reach a child in the back seat, four of them ending with a broken window. The agency's early view was that the electronic locks were not getting enough voltage, and owners said there was no prior low-voltage warning. Replace an aging low-voltage battery before it fails, and know where the mechanical releases are. Not every Model Y has a manual release in the rear doors.

Suspension knuckles and arm bolts from the factory

2020-2022 Model Y (recall 21V-912); 2020 Model Y (recall 20V-709); 2020-2021 and 2023 Model Y (recalls 21V-835 and 22V-895)

A run of chassis recalls hit early production: knuckles that could fracture, front upper control arm bolts that may not have been torqued, and front lateral link fasteners that could loosen. Each could let a suspension part separate. On a used early Model Y, a loud clunk, a sudden pull or an off-center wheel needs a Tesla visit right away, recall or not.

Guide: What's that clunking noise when I go over bumps?

Phantom braking on camera-only cars

2021-2022 Model Y

The Model Y was part of the February 2022 NHTSA investigation into unneeded hard braking with Autopilot or adaptive cruise. The probe closed in June 2026 without a recall. For families, the practical advice is to keep following distance generous on I-95, so a sudden slowdown does not invite a rear-end hit from the car behind.

Fasteners and seats that were not fully secured

2022-2023 Model Y (recalls 23V-130 and 23V-385); 2024 Model Y (recall 24V-886)

Separate small campaigns covered second-row seat back bolts that may not have been tightened, a loose steering wheel fastener that could let the wheel separate from the column, and a front seat recliner weld that could fail. They affected small batches, but each is safety-critical. A VIN check takes a minute and clears all three.

Camera, steering and computer software faults

2023 Model Y (recalls 23V-489, 24V-035, 25V-092); 2023-2025 Model Y (recall 25V-002)

The 2023 cars had a forward camera that could be misaligned and silently disable automatic emergency braking, a software release that blanked the rearview camera, and a power steering board that could lose assist after a stop. Later, a computer short on 2023-2025 cars could kill the rearview image. Most were fixed by software, but cars with already damaged computers needed hardware under warranty.

Defrost and taillight software

2020-2022 Model Y (recall 22V-050); 2020-2023 Model Y (recall 22V-844)

A heat pump software error could trap refrigerant and weaken windshield defrosting, which shows up in Florida as slow defogging in a downpour. Another update fixed taillights that could intermittently fail to light. Both were software, so they matter mainly when a car has been offline for a long time.

Notable recalls

  • 21V-912 (2020-2022 Model Y): Front and rear suspension knuckles may fracture, letting suspension links separate. Service visit.
  • 20V-709 (2020 Model Y): Bolts joining the front upper control arm and steering knuckle may not have been tightened properly.
  • 22V-050 (2020-2022 Model Y): Heat pump valve software could reduce windshield defrost performance. Software update.
  • 22V-844 (2020-2023 Model Y): One or both taillights may intermittently fail to illuminate. Software update.
  • 23V-385 (2022-2023 Model Y): Steering wheel fastener may be loose, and the wheel could separate from the steering column.
  • 25V-002 (2023-2025 Model Y): Computer circuit board may short and stop the rearview camera image. Software update, with computer replacement if damaged.

Recall repairs are free at any franchised Tesla dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since this list is not complete.

Maintenance that matters

Every monthCheck tire pressure cold and look over the tread. The heavier Model Y is harder on its tires than the sedan, especially on 20- and 21-inch wheels.
Every 6,250 milesTire rotation, or sooner if front-to-rear tread depth drifts apart by 2/32 inch. Ask for an alignment check at the same visit if wear is uneven.
Every 2 yearsCabin air filter. Families with kids and beach gear in the car may want it yearly.
Every 4 yearsBrake fluid test, replaced if contaminated. Hot, humid climates can call for earlier checks.
Every 3-4 yearsHave the low-voltage battery's health checked, even before a warning. On 2021 cars in particular, a weak low-voltage supply is tied to the door lock complaints.
Every few monthsLubricate and inspect the rear hatch and door seals, and clear sand from the hatch and frunk gutters so water drains instead of pooling.

Confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact year and engine.

Buying a used Tesla Model Y

  • Best value: a 2023-2024 Long Range AWD. It is past most of the early chassis and fastener recalls and sells well below a refreshed car. Confirm the 2023 camera and steering software recalls are complete.
  • Best overall: a 2025 or later Juniper car, which has the newest hardware and the most warranty left. The Model Y Standard from late 2025 is the cheaper choice if you can give up some range and features.
  • Be careful with 2020-2021 builds. Check every chassis recall by VIN, inspect panel fit and seals, and on a 2021 replace the low-voltage battery if its age is unknown. These cars can be very good once sorted, but they were the least consistent from the factory.
  • Seven-seat versions from 2021 on are useful for small children only; adults find the third row tight. Check that all seat belts and seat latches work before you buy.

The Florida factor

In a Boca summer, a child left in a closed car is in danger within minutes. That is why the 2021 door complaint matters so much here. Show every regular passenger the mechanical release in the front doors, find out whether your rear doors have one, and keep the low-voltage battery young. Cabin Overheat Protection and Dog Mode reduce cabin heat but are not a substitute for getting a child out.

The Model Y sits higher than the Model 3, but its battery is still the floor of the car, and salt-water flooding is the one situation that can turn an EV dangerous days later. Before a storm, move it to a garage or higher ground away from the coast. If water ever reaches the floor, keep it out of your garage and call Tesla before charging.

Beach days at Red Reef or Spanish River leave sand in the hatch seals and frunk drains. Sand-clogged drains hold water in the hatch area, which humid weather turns into a musty smell. A quick vacuum and a damp wipe of the seals after the beach keeps it dry.

Tesla Model Y FAQ

How do I open a Model Y door if the power fails?

In the front doors, the mechanical release sits near the window switches; pull it up. Rear-door releases differ by build, and some Model Ys have none, so check your owner's manual. If the car will not wake at all, the low-voltage battery is the likely cause.

Which Model Y years are best to buy used?

The 2023-2024 Long Range AWD is the best value, and the 2025 or later refresh is the most refined. The 2020-2021 cars had the most factory recalls and need a careful VIN check.

Do over-the-air recalls need a service visit?

Usually not. The car downloads and installs the fix itself over Wi-Fi or its cellular connection. Hardware recalls such as the suspension knuckles still need Tesla service.

How long do Model Y tires last?

Often 25,000-35,000 miles on regular trims and less on 21-inch Performance wheels. Regular rotations and correct pressure make the biggest difference.

Guides for Tesla Model Y owners

Why does my car battery keep dying? Finding the real cause
A battery that keeps going flat has one of three problems: it is worn out and cannot hold a charge, something is drawing power while the car is off, or the alternator is not refilling it while you drive. A free battery and charging test rules out the first and third, and a parasitic draw test with a meter finds the second.
What's that clunking noise when I go over bumps?
A clunk or knock over bumps usually comes from worn sway bar end links, a tired strut mount, or worn control arm bushings, all of which let metal parts tap together. Before you book anything, empty the trunk and check that the spare and jack are tied down, because loose cargo makes the same sound. A clunk paired with loose or wandering steering can be a ball joint and needs prompt attention.
Does Florida heat hurt an EV battery?
Yes, but less than many owners fear. Fleet data from Geotab shows EVs in hot climates lose battery capacity about 0.4 percentage points faster per year than those in mild climates, on top of an average of about 2.3 percent a year. Heat also cuts day-to-day range when the A/C runs hard. Charging habits and where you park matter more than the climate itself.
Uneven tire wear: what each wear pattern is telling you
The shape of the wear tells you the cause. Both outer edges worn means the tires ran underinflated, a worn center means too much air, one edge worn means camber is off, a sawtooth feel across the tread means toe is off, and scalloped dips mean worn shocks or struts. Fix the cause before buying tires, or the new set will wear the same way.
How do I prepare my car for a hurricane in Florida?
Keep at least half a tank of fuel (or 50-80% charge on an EV) all season, photograph the car and its documents, confirm you carry comprehensive coverage, and park on the highest ground you can reach away from trees. Do the mechanical checks, like tires, wipers and battery, before a cone appears on the map, because shops and parts stores fill up fast.
Why does my car A/C smell musty, like mildew or old socks?
A musty, sour or dirty-sock smell from the vents almost always comes from mold and bacteria growing on the damp evaporator core behind the dash, often helped along by a clogged cabin air filter or a slow drain. Start with a new cabin filter, then have the evaporator cleaned with a foaming treatment if the smell stays. It is unpleasant but rarely a mechanical failure.
