BMW 3 Series: Problems by Year, Recalls and Repair Costs

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

The best used 3 Series buys are 2017 and newer, when the 330i got the B46/B48 four and the 340i and M340i the B58 six. The riskiest are 2012-2015 328i and 320i sedans with the N20, whose timing chain guides and electric water pump both fail, and 2007-2010 335i cars with the N54 twin-turbo.

The 3 Series is the most common BMW in Boca Raton parking lots, and most of the ones for sale here are off-lease F30 and G20 sedans with 30,000 to 70,000 miles. Which engine sits under the hood decides almost everything about what the car will cost you, far more than the trim badge or the mileage.

Three generations matter to a used buyer today. The E90 sedan (2006-2011 model years) used naturally aspirated N52 sixes in the 328i and the N54, then N55, turbo six in the 335i. The F30 (2012-2018) moved the volume 328i to the turbocharged 2.0-liter N20 four, then switched to the B46/B48 four in the 2017 330i. The G20 (2019 and newer) carries the B48-family four in the 330i and 330e and the B58 six in the M340i, with the S58 in the M3.

RepairPal rates the 328i, which covers most older cars, 3.0 out of 5 and 19th of 31 luxury midsize cars, at about $773 a year in repairs and maintenance. That average hides a wide spread: a 2014 328i on original timing guides and a 2021 330i are very different cars to own.

BMW 3 Series generations

Seventh generation, G20

2019-present (G20)
330i and 330i xDrive: 2.0L turbo B48 family four (B46 in SULEV emission states). M340i: 3.0L turbo B58 six, listed by the EPA as a mild hybrid for 2021. 330e: B48 plug-in hybrid. M3 (G80, 2021 on): 3.0L twin-turbo S58 six.

Production began in October 2018. A facelift with a curved dashboard display was announced in May 2022. EPA rates a 2021 330i at 30 mpg combined. Early 2020 cars carry several software and assembly recalls, including the starter overheating campaign.

Sixth generation, F30

2012-2018 (F30)
320i and 328i (2012-2016): 2.0L turbo N20 four, or the N26 version of it on 328i cars sold in SULEV emission states. 335i (2012-2015): 3.0L turbo N55 six. 330i (2017-2018): 2.0L turbo B46/B48 four. 340i (2016-2018): 3.0L turbo B58 six. 328d (2014-2018): 2.0L N47 diesel. ActiveHybrid 3 used the N55.

Facelifted for 2016, when the US sold the 328i alongside the new 340i; the 330i took over for 2017. EPA rates a 2015 328i automatic at 27 mpg combined.

Fifth generation, E90

2006-2011 (E90 sedan)
325i and 330i (early years) and 328i (2007-2011): 3.0L N52 naturally aspirated six. 335i: 3.0L N54 twin-turbo six until early 2010, then the single twin-scroll turbo N55. 335d (2009-2011): 3.0L diesel. M3: 4.0L S65 V8.

The sedan was facelifted for the 2009 model year. Coupes and convertibles (E92, E93) continued into 2012 and 2013. On cars this old in South Florida, Takata airbag status is the first thing to check.

Known BMW 3 Series problems by year

N20 and N26 timing chain guide wear

2012-2015 320i and 328i (settlement years); 2016 328i uses the same N20 design

The chain rides on plastic guide rails that can crack, letting the chain slap and eventually jump timing. Listen at a cold start: a thin whine that climbs with engine speed is the early sign, and a rattle that lasts more than a second or two is a later one. The class settlement that once reimbursed part of this repair is closed and excluded cars past 8 years or 100,000 miles, so every remaining F30 four-cylinder is an out-of-pocket repair.

Guide: What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?

Electric water pump failure and connector short

2007-2016 (N52, N54, N55 and N20 engines); recall 24V-608 on 2012-2016 328i

These engines circulate coolant with an electric pump that gives little warning before it stops. A yellow or red coolant temperature light, the fan running hard at idle, and a sudden drop in power are the usual sequence. On N20 cars the pump's electrical plug can also let water in and short, which is why recall 24V-608 adds a shield and replaces the pump if needed.

Guide: Engine overheating: what to do right now, and what causes it

Brake vacuum pump lubrication on the N20

2012-2014 320i and 328i

The four-cylinder turbo has no strong intake vacuum, so a cam-driven pump supplies the brake booster. Poor lubrication could ruin it, leaving a hard pedal and much longer stops. Recalls 13V-454 and 14V-627 modified the engine; a car with a stiff pedal at startup should be checked for both.

Guide: Why does my brake pedal feel soft or spongy?

N54 fuel pump and injector trouble

2007-2010 335i (E90)

Long cranking when hot, stumbles under boost and lean misfire codes are the pattern. The high-pressure fuel pump and the outward-opening piezo injectors are the usual suspects, and both need BMW-capable software to code after replacement. Budget for them on any N54 car with unknown history.

Guide: Why does my engine idle rough or shake at a stop?

Loose VANOS housing bolts

2010-2011 328i, 2011-2012 335i (recall 14V-176); 2010-2012 3 Series (recall 23V-707)

The aluminum bolts holding the variable cam timing units can loosen, causing rough running, lost power or a stall. BMW replaced them under a 2014 recall, then recalled a larger group in 2023. Check recall status before paying for diagnosis on an E90 that runs badly.

Guide: Check engine light on but the car drives fine: what does it mean?

Oil filter housing and valve cover leaks

Most 2006-2018 cars, B48 and B58 cars at higher mileage

The oil filter housing sits above the belt, so a leak shows up as a hot-oil smell after a drive or a frayed, squealing belt. Valve cover leaks drip onto the exhaust. Neither is an emergency, but an oil-soaked belt can be pulled into the front of the engine.

Notable recalls

  • 24V-608 (2012-2016 328i and 328i xDrive (also X1, X3, X4, Z4, 228i, 428i, 528i)): An improperly sealed electrical connector on the electric water pump can take on water and short circuit, creating a fire risk. Dealers inspect and replace the pump and plug as needed and fit a protective shield. Owner letters went out in March 2025, so many cars are still open.
  • 13V-454 (2012-2014 320i and 328i sedans, 2014 328i xDrive Sports Wagon): The brake vacuum pump can fail from insufficient lubrication, reducing power assist. Recall 14V-627 expanded it and added a locking ring to keep the camshaft seal disk in place.
  • 23V-707 (2010-2012 3 Series sedan and convertible, 2010-2011 coupe and Sports Wagon): VANOS housing bolts can loosen and break, which can stall the engine. Dealers replace the four bolts free. This follows the earlier VANOS bolt recall 14V-176.
  • 20V-017 (2006-2013 E90-family 3 Series including 328i, 335i and M3): Covers non-desiccated Takata driver airbag inflators that were installed as interim parts in earlier recalls. They can explode after long exposure to heat and humidity. The driver airbag is replaced free.
  • 24V-576 (2020 M340i and M340i xDrive (with X5, X7 and other models)): If the starter fails, repeated attempts to start can overheat it and ignite nearby material. The first remedy was a software update. Recall 25V-644 later called for a new starter, including cars already updated under 24V-576.

Recall repairs are free at any franchised BMW dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since this list is not complete.

Maintenance that matters

Every 5,000-7,500 miles in Boca drivingSynthetic oil meeting the BMW Longlife spec listed in your owner's manual, plus filter. On an N20 car, short oil intervals are the cheapest protection the timing chain will ever get.
Every 2 yearsBrake fluid exchange and cabin microfilter. Most 3 Series cars have brake pad wear sensors; replace the sensor with every pad job or the warning stays on.
45,000-60,000 milesSpark plugs on turbo engines and an engine air filter. Many owners of 335i and 340i cars use the lower figure.
60,000-80,000 milesAutomatic transmission fluid and filter pan on the ZF 8-speed, coolant replacement, and an inspection of the water pump wiring and thermostat on N20 and N55 engines.

Confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact year and engine.

Typical BMW 3 Series repair costs

JobTypical cost
Synthetic oil service$130-$220
Electric water pump and thermostat (328i)$1,100-$1,500
N20 timing chain, guides and oil pump chain$2,400-$3,800
Oil filter housing gasket with new belt$450-$850
N54 high-pressure fuel pump$1,000-$1,600
Front pads, rotors and sensor$550-$900
Run-flat tire, 18-inch, installed$260-$420 each

Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.

Buying a used BMW 3 Series

  • Seek out 2017-2018 330i or 340i F30 sedans and any 2019 or newer G20 with service records. The B46/B48 and B58 engines have avoided the chain guide and electric pump problems that defined the earlier cars, and parts are plentiful.
  • Approach 2012-2016 328i and 320i cars with caution. Ask for invoices showing a timing chain kit and a water pump; without them, take the repair cost off the price. Listen to the engine cold, before the seller has warmed it up.
  • A 2012-2015 335i has the N55, sturdier than the N54 but still leak-prone and on the electric pump. A 2007-2010 N54 335i needs a specialist budget.
  • On every car, run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. Open campaigns 24V-608, 23V-707 or 20V-017 are free, but an unrepaired Takata inflator on an older E90 is a reason to walk away until it is done.

The Florida factor

A 328i commuting on I-95 from Boca to Fort Lauderdale lives at the hot end of its cooling system's range for half the year. Stop-and-go traffic with the A/C on is exactly when an aging electric water pump gives up, and the warning comes with little margin. If the coolant light comes on in traffic on Glades Road, pull into a lot and shut the engine off; driving the last few miles is how heads warp.

June through November brings afternoon downpours and street flooding around Mizner Park and the low blocks east of Federal Highway. The water pump connector recall exists because the pump's plug sits low and can take on water, so 2012-2016 328i owners have an extra reason to get it done before hurricane season. Never drive a 3 Series through standing water deep enough to reach the bottom of the bumper.

Run-flat tires on most F30 and G20 sedans dry-rot in Florida sun before the tread wears out. Check the four-digit date code and replace at five or six years. Snowbirds should leave a summer-parked 3 Series on a battery maintainer, since these cars draw current while asleep.

BMW 3 Series FAQ

Which BMW 3 Series years are the most reliable?

For a used buy, 2017-2018 330i and 340i and the 2019-and-newer G20 cars have the strongest record, because the B46/B48 and B58 engines avoided the N20's timing chain and pump problems. Condition and service history still matter more than the year.

How do I tell if my 328i has the N20 or the N52?

By year. A 2007-2011 328i has the 3.0-liter N52 six, which is naturally aspirated and has no timing chain guide issue. A 2012-2016 328i has the 2.0-liter turbo N20 or its N26 variant. The engine cover and your registration's displacement will confirm it.

Is the N20 timing chain settlement still open?

No. The settlement has closed, and it excluded cars older than 8 years or past 100,000 miles anyway. Today the repair is paid by the owner, which is why buyers should ask for proof it has been done.

Are 3 Series recalls really free if the car is 10 years old?

Yes. Safety recalls do not expire with age or ownership changes. A BMW dealer will do any open campaign, such as the 24V-608 water pump connector fix, at no charge.

Guides for BMW 3 Series owners

Engine overheating: what to do right now, and what causes it
Pull over as soon as it is safe, turn the A/C off, and shut the engine down if the gauge stays in the red. Do not open the radiator cap while it is hot. Low coolant from a leak is the most common cause, followed by a stuck thermostat, a dead radiator fan or a failing water pump. Driving on an overheating engine can warp the cylinder head in minutes.
What is that knocking noise coming from my engine?
It depends on the sound. A light metallic pinging when you accelerate uphill is usually fuel detonation, often from the wrong octane. A fast tick that follows engine speed is usually the valvetrain. A deep, heavy knock from low in the engine that gets louder with RPM is often a worn connecting rod bearing, and that one means you should shut the engine off and have it towed.
Oil leaking under my car: where is it coming from?
Dark brown or black drips under the front half of the car are almost always engine oil, and the most common sources are a loose drain plug or filter, a hardened valve cover gasket, or a leaking oil pan gasket. A few drops a day is a slow seep you can plan around, while a puddle the size of a dinner plate overnight needs attention this week. The key is to keep the dipstick above the low mark while you get it fixed.
Why does my brake pedal feel soft or spongy?
A soft or spongy brake pedal means the hydraulic system is not transmitting your foot pressure cleanly, usually because of air or moisture in the fluid, a leak, or a master cylinder that is bypassing internally. Treat it as a stop-driving problem: have it towed or driven a very short distance at low speed to a brake shop. A pedal that slowly sinks while you hold it at a light is the most urgent version.
What should a pre-purchase inspection check on a used car?
A proper pre-purchase inspection puts the car on a lift and checks the engine, transmission, brakes, tires, suspension, frame, A/C and electronics, plus a scan for stored and recently cleared trouble codes. Expect to pay about $100-$250 at an independent shop and more for European or exotic models, which is small next to the repair bills it can expose.
How old is too old for tires, even with good tread?
Most tire makers say to retire a tire 10 years after it was made no matter how much tread is left, and to have it inspected every year once it passes 5 years. Several automakers have set a stricter 6-year limit. In South Florida heat and sun, plan on the earlier end of that window, especially for cars that sit and for spares.
