Tesla Model 3: Problems by Year, Recalls and Repair Costs

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

A used Model 3 is mostly a tire, suspension and software car, not an engine or battery risk. The early 2017-2020 cars had rearview camera harness and front suspension fastener recalls, 2021-2022 cars drew a long phantom braking investigation, and the 2024 and later Highland refresh has had computer and camera software recalls. A VIN check covers all of it.

The Model 3 is the most common electric car on Boca streets, and many early cars are now coming off their first owners. Unlike a gas sedan, its expensive failure points are few: the high-voltage battery and drive units are covered by an 8-year warranty, and most used cars are still inside it. What owners actually pay for is tires, alignment, suspension parts, the low-voltage battery and glass.

Tesla does not use model years the way other brands do. It changes hardware during production, so two cars with the same model year can differ. The useful dividing lines are the late-2020 update that added a heat pump for the 2021 model year, the April 2021 switch from radar to camera-only driver assistance, and the Highland refresh that reached U.S. buyers in January 2024.

Many Tesla recalls are fixed with an over-the-air software update the car installs overnight, and those still count as recalls in NHTSA's database. A minority need a service visit. That is why a Model 3 can show a dozen recalls on paper and still need nothing more than a software version check.

Tesla Model 3 generations

Highland refresh

2024-present
RWD single motor (EPA about 272 miles for 2024), Long Range RWD (about 363 miles), Long Range AWD dual motor (about 341-346 miles), Performance AWD (about 298-314 miles). For 2026 the lineup is listed as Standard RWD, Premium RWD, Premium AWD and Performance.

About half the parts changed. A steering wheel without turn signal and gear stalks at launch, a rear-seat screen, ventilated front seats, a softer suspension and more sound insulation.

First update

2021-2023
Standard Range Plus RWD (2021, about 263 miles), RWD (2022-2023, about 272 miles), Long Range AWD (about 353-358 miles), Performance AWD (about 315 miles).

Heat pump with Tesla's octovalve, power trunk, double-pane glass, black exterior trim. Radar removed from cars built from late April 2021; ultrasonic parking sensors dropped from October 2022.

Original Model 3

2017-2020
Long Range RWD (2017-2018, 310 miles), Mid Range (2018-2020), Standard Range and Standard Range Plus RWD (2019-2020, about 220-250 miles), Long Range AWD and Performance AWD dual motor (2018-2020, about 299-322 miles).

Resistive cabin heat rather than a heat pump, chrome window trim, and the earliest build quality. All are now past the 4-year basic warranty.

Known Tesla Model 3 problems by year

Rearview camera harness damaged by trunk opening

2017-2020 Model 3

In December 2021 Tesla recalled about 356,000 Model 3s built from 2017 to 2020 because opening and closing the trunk could damage the wiring harness for the rearview camera. A flickering or black backup camera on one of these cars is the classic sign. If the camera fails on a car of this age, first ask Tesla whether the recall repair was ever performed on that VIN.

Loose front suspension lateral link fasteners

2018-2021 Model 3 (recalls 21V-835 and 23V-235)

On a small number of cars the fasteners holding the front lateral links to the subframe could loosen, and a link could separate. Clunking from the front, a steering wheel that suddenly sits off center, or a change in how the car tracks are warning signs. Stop driving and book service, because this affects steering control. Normal wear on these links and the front upper control arms also shows up as creaks and clunks on high-mileage cars.

Guide: What's that clunking noise when I go over bumps?

Phantom braking on camera-only cars

2021-2022 Model 3

After Tesla dropped radar, NHTSA opened an investigation in February 2022 into sudden, unneeded braking with cruise control or Autopilot engaged, covering about 416,000 Model 3 and Model Y cars. The agency closed it in June 2026 without a recall, citing a low demonstrated hazard, while noting the closure is not a finding that no defect exists. Separately, recall 21V-846 fixed false forward collision warnings on cars running software 2021.36.5.2.

Weak windshield defrost from a heat pump valve

2021-2022 Model 3 (recall 22V-050)

A software error could open a valve in the heat pump at the wrong time and trap refrigerant in the evaporator, weakening the defroster. In South Florida that matters less for frost and more for fog: a humid downpour can steam up the glass fast. The remedy is a software update; Tesla service can confirm by VIN that it was applied.

Loss of power steering assist after a stop

2023 Model 3 on software before 2023.38.4 (recall 25V-092)

The circuit board in the electric power steering could be overstressed, so assist dropped out when the car pulled away again after stopping. Steering still works but takes much more effort, which is risky in a tight turn. Tesla's remedy is software, and current cars should already have it.

Car computer short that kills the backup camera

2024-2025 Model 3 (recall 25V-002)

On early Highland cars, the computer's circuit board could short during power-up, and among other symptoms the rearview camera would stop displaying. Software 2024.44.25.3 and later changes the power-up sequence. Computers that were already damaged had to be replaced under warranty, so a used 2024 with a camera problem should go to Tesla, not an independent shop.

Notable recalls

  • 21V-835 (2019-2021 Model 3): Front suspension lateral link fasteners may loosen and let the link separate from the subframe. Service visit.
  • 22V-050 (2021-2022 Model 3): Heat pump valve software could trap refrigerant and reduce defrost performance. Software update.
  • 23V-838 (2017-2023 Model 3): Autosteer driver-attention controls judged insufficient. Over-the-air update adding alerts and checks.
  • 24V-935 (2017-2025 Model 3): Tire pressure warning light may not stay on between drives. Over-the-air software update.
  • 25V-092 (2023 Model 3): Power steering circuit board overstress could cut steering assist after a stop. Software update.
  • 25V-002 (2024-2025 Model 3): Computer circuit board may short and disable the rearview camera image. Software update, with computer replacement if damaged.

Recall repairs are free at any franchised Tesla dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since this list is not complete.

Maintenance that matters

MonthlyCheck cold tire pressures against the door-jamb label. Heat raises pressure on the road, so set them in the morning, not after a drive.
Every 6,250 milesRotate tires, or sooner when front and rear tread depth differ by 2/32 inch. Have the alignment checked if the inner edges are wearing first.
Every 2 yearsReplace the cabin air filter. A musty smell from the vents in summer means it is overdue.
Every 4 yearsBrake fluid test and replacement if needed. Lightly used brakes also benefit from a few firm stops each month to clean rust off the rotors.
Every 6 years, 2017-2020 carsReplace the A/C desiccant bag on cars without the heat pump. The interval and parts differ on 2021 and later cars.
When the car warnsReplace the low-voltage battery promptly. Do not ignore a second warning.

Confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact year and engine.

Buying a used Tesla Model 3

  • Best value: a 2021-2023 Long Range AWD or RWD. You get the heat pump, double-pane glass and the more efficient climate system, at a big discount to a Highland car. Expect many of the camera-only cars to show phantom braking complaints, and test-drive with cruise control on.
  • Best overall: a 2024 or later Highland if your budget allows. It is quieter, rides better and has the longest remaining warranty. Confirm the software is current for recall 25V-002, and decide if you can live without turn-signal stalks before you buy.
  • Approach 2017-2020 cars with a checklist: the rearview camera harness recall, the lateral link fastener recalls, tire and alignment condition, and the low-voltage battery's age. These cars have the least warranty left, so a Tesla service history report matters more.
  • On any Model 3, check the battery's remaining range at a full charge against the original EPA rating. Some loss is normal; a large gap is worth a battery health check at Tesla before purchase.

The Florida factor

The Model 3 sits low, and its battery pack forms the floor of the car. That makes standing water on Federal Highway or in the Mizner garages a bigger concern than on a crossover. Do not drive through water you cannot see the bottom of, and if saltwater flooding ever reaches the car, do not charge it until Tesla has inspected the pack.

Every Model 3 has a glass roof, and on a 95-degree afternoon the cabin heats fast even with tint. Cabin Overheat Protection helps, but it uses battery. Parking in a covered space at Town Center, or in shade, saves both range and interior trim. Know where the manual front door release is, and teach it to passengers, since the electronic buttons rely on the low-voltage system.

Florida's summer storms fog windows quickly. If your 2021-2022 car defogs slowly, confirm it has the 22V-050 software. Keep the cabin filter fresh, and run the A/C rather than recirculating constantly, so moisture leaves the cabin.

Tesla Model 3 FAQ

Which Tesla Model 3 years are best to buy used?

The 2021-2023 cars offer the best value because they added the heat pump and double-pane glass. The 2024 and later Highland refresh is the most refined but costs more. Early 2017-2020 cars are cheapest and have the least warranty left.

Do Tesla over-the-air recalls count?

Yes. NHTSA lists them as recalls even when the fix is a software update the car installs on its own. A car on current software has usually received them already; Tesla service can confirm by VIN.

Can an independent shop fix my Model 3?

For tires, alignment, brakes, suspension, low-voltage batteries and cabin filters, yes, if the shop knows the correct lift points. Recall work, battery and drive unit faults, and computer replacements go to Tesla.

What does phantom braking feel like?

A sudden, unneeded slowdown with cruise control or Autopilot engaged, with no obstacle ahead. Keep your foot near the accelerator, and report repeated events to Tesla and through NHTSA's complaint form.

Guides for Tesla Model 3 owners

Does Florida heat hurt an EV battery?
Yes, but less than many owners fear. Fleet data from Geotab shows EVs in hot climates lose battery capacity about 0.4 percentage points faster per year than those in mild climates, on top of an average of about 2.3 percent a year. Heat also cuts day-to-day range when the A/C runs hard. Charging habits and where you park matter more than the climate itself.
What's that clunking noise when I go over bumps?
A clunk or knock over bumps usually comes from worn sway bar end links, a tired strut mount, or worn control arm bushings, all of which let metal parts tap together. Before you book anything, empty the trunk and check that the spare and jack are tied down, because loose cargo makes the same sound. A clunk paired with loose or wandering steering can be a ball joint and needs prompt attention.
Uneven tire wear: what each wear pattern is telling you
The shape of the wear tells you the cause. Both outer edges worn means the tires ran underinflated, a worn center means too much air, one edge worn means camber is off, a sawtooth feel across the tread means toe is off, and scalloped dips mean worn shocks or struts. Fix the cause before buying tires, or the new set will wear the same way.
Tire pressure light on? What it means and what to do
A steady tire pressure light means at least one tire is roughly 25 percent or more below the pressure on your door-jamb sticker. A light that flashes for about a minute at startup and then stays on means the monitoring system itself has a fault, most often a sensor with a dead battery. Check all four tires with a gauge before you do anything else.
How to tell if a car has flood damage, and what to do if yours got flooded
The surest signs of flood damage are in places sellers rarely clean: fine silt or a waterline under the seats, in the spare tire well and behind the dash, rust on seat rails and screws under the carpet, and a musty smell masked by heavy air freshener. Run the VIN through NMVTIS and the Florida title check, and never buy a used car in South Florida after a storm season without an independent inspection.
Why does my car A/C smell musty, like mildew or old socks?
A musty, sour or dirty-sock smell from the vents almost always comes from mold and bacteria growing on the damp evaporator core behind the dash, often helped along by a clogged cabin air filter or a slow drain. Start with a new cabin filter, then have the evaporator cleaned with a foaming treatment if the smell stays. It is unpleasant but rarely a mechanical failure.
