Lexus NX: Problems by Year, Recalls and Repair Costs

By the Boca Auto Care Editorial Team 路 Reviewed October 28, 2026 路 How we write guides

Short answer

The Lexus NX has a short problem list, and most of it is recalls rather than wear. On 2015-2019 cars, confirm the fuel pump and airbag sensor recalls by VIN. On a 2022, the first year of the redesign, make sure the front shock mount weld inspection and the brake software updates were done. The hybrid NX 300h and NX 350h are the low-risk choices.

The NX is Lexus's compact crossover, a size down from the RX and a common choice in Boca for downsizers who want a Lexus that fits a condo parking space. RepairPal rates the first-generation NX 200t at 4.0 out of 5, second of 11 luxury compact SUVs, with average yearly repair and maintenance costs near $690. That figure is higher than the larger RX, mostly because the turbo NX is a younger, smaller-volume car with pricier parts per job.

There are two very different generations. The 2015-2021 NX used either a 2.0-liter turbo four, sold as the NX 200t and renamed NX 300 for 2018, or the NX 300h hybrid. The 2022 redesign moved the NX onto the same GA-K platform as the Toyota RAV4 and added four powertrains, including the brand's first plug-in hybrid, the NX 450h+.

Both generations are mechanically conservative. The 2.0-liter turbo uses both port and direct injection, which limits the intake carbon buildup seen on older direct-injection engines, and the hybrids use Toyota's long-proven system. So the realistic risks are recall items and normal wear, not a known engine or transmission weakness.

Lexus NX generations

Second generation (AZ20)

2022-present
NX 250: 2.5-liter four, 8-speed automatic, front or all-wheel drive. NX 350: 2.4-liter turbo four, about 275 hp, 8-speed, AWD. NX 350h: 2.5-liter hybrid, AWD, nickel-metal hydride battery for 2022-2023 and lithium-ion from 2024. NX 450h+: 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid, AWD.

Shares its platform and most powertrains with the RAV4. The NX 350h is rated 39 mpg combined by the EPA. A mid-cycle facelift was unveiled in September 2026.

First generation (AZ10)

2015-2021
NX 200t (2015-2017) and NX 300 (2018-2021): 2.0-liter 8AR-FTS turbo four with direct and port injection, 6-speed automatic. NX 300h: 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid with eCVT and a nickel-metal hydride battery.

Facelifted for 2018 with a revised grille, lights and dash, plus Lexus Safety System+ as standard. EPA ratings: about 24-25 mpg combined for the turbo, 31-32 for the hybrid.

Known Lexus NX problems by year

Low-pressure fuel pump that can fail

2015 NX 200t (recall 20V-012); 2018-2019 NX 300 (recall 20V-682); some 2019 NX 300 (recall 25V-028)

The in-tank pump's impeller can bind, so the engine runs rough, hesitates or stalls, and it may not restart. The NX was caught in three waves of the Toyota and Lexus campaign, the last one filed in 2025 for a small group of 2019 builds. A turbo NX that has ever stalled at a light deserves a VIN check before any paid diagnosis.

Airbag sensors that may not trigger

2015-2016 NX 200t and NX 300h (recall 18V-085)

The pressure or acceleration sensors that tell the airbag computer a crash is happening could fail, leaving the front, side or curtain airbags undeployed. Dealers replace affected sensors by serial number at no charge, and an early NX without it on record should go to a dealer before anything else.

Missing spot welds at the front shock mounts

2022 NX 250, NX 350, NX 350h and NX 450h+ (recall 22V-238)

A small batch of first-year cars left the factory without some spot welds between the body and the front shock absorber mounting areas. In the worst case the shock could separate from the body and upset handling. Dealers add the missing welds, or replace body panels where welds have failed, at no charge. Treat a 2022 without this recall closed as unfinished.

Parking brake and stability control software faults

2022 NX 250 and NX 350 (recall 22V-661); 2022 NX 350h and NX 450h+ (recall 22V-239)

Two brake-computer problems in the redesign's first year. On the gas models, the skid control unit could falsely detect an overcurrent at the electronic parking brake and lock it out, so the parking brake would not engage. On the hybrids, stability control might stay off after a restart if the driver had switched it off on the previous drive. Both are software fixes at the dealer.

Driver airbag spiral cable and rearview camera

2023-2024 NX 250, NX 350 and NX 350h (recall 23V-480); 2022-2025 NX 250 and NX 350 (recall 26V-162)

A connection inside the steering column spiral cable may be poorly welded and can separate, switching off the driver airbag. An airbag warning light on the dash is always worth an immediate dealer visit. Separately, the rearview camera image may not appear in reverse. The camera fix is a software update or a new camera, and both campaigns are free.

Notable recalls

  • 18V-085 (2015-2016 NX 200t and NX 300h): Airbag pressure or acceleration sensors may fail, so airbags may not deploy in a crash. Sensors replaced free.
  • 20V-682 (2018-2019 NX 300): Low-pressure fuel pump inside the tank may fail, which can stall the engine. Pump replaced free.
  • 22V-238 (2022 NX 250, NX 350, NX 350h, NX 450h+): Missing spot welds between the body panels and front shock absorber mounts may let a shock separate from its mounting.
  • 22V-661 (2022 NX 250 and NX 350): Skid control ECU may falsely detect an electronic parking brake overcurrent and enter a failsafe that prevents the parking brake from engaging.
  • 23V-480 (2023-2024 NX 250, NX 350, NX 350h): Steering column spiral cable connection may separate and deactivate the driver airbag.
  • 26V-162 (2022-2025 NX 250 and NX 350): Rearview camera image may not display in reverse. Software update or camera replacement.

Recall repairs are free at any franchised Lexus dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since this list is not complete.

Maintenance that matters

Every 5,000 milesTire rotation and pressure check. The NX's 18- and 20-inch tires are a common size but wear quickly on the front axle.
Every 10,000 miles or 12 monthsSynthetic oil and filter. On the 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter turbo engines, short trips in heavy heat are harder on oil, so stay on schedule.
Every 15,000 milesCabin air filter, which also keeps the hybrid battery intake on the NX 300h and NX 350h from pulling in dust and odor.
Every 30,000 milesEngine air filter, brake fluid check, and inspection of the rear suspension bushings and drive shaft boots on AWD models.
Every 60,000 milesHave the automatic transmission fluid checked on turbo models, and the coolant hoses and water pump inspected for seepage.
On the NX 450h+Inspect the charging port, cable and onboard charger cooling on the schedule in the owner's manual, and keep software up to date.

Confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact year and engine.

Typical South Florida ranges for parts and labor, for budgeting only. Your quote depends on the vehicle and the shop.

Buying a used Lexus NX

  • Best value: 2018-2021 NX 300h hybrid. It has the facelift, Safety System+ as standard, 31 mpg, and none of the turbo's fuel pump campaigns. Have the hybrid battery health checked and confirm it has always been serviced.
  • A 2018-2021 NX 300 turbo is a good car if the 20V-682 fuel pump recall is closed and the oil was changed on time. Walk away from one with no service history; turbo engines are less forgiving of neglect.
  • For a second-generation NX, a 2023 or later is the safer buy over a 2022. If you do buy a 2022, ask for the dealer record of the shock mount weld inspection, the parking brake or stability control software, and any later camera update.
  • The NX 350h is the pick of the newer cars for local driving, with 39 mpg and the simplest powertrain. The NX 450h+ suits owners with a garage outlet who can charge nightly; without home charging it is mostly a heavier NX 350h.

The Florida factor

Many NX owners in Boca park in condo garages. That keeps the sun off, but shared garages rarely have charging, which limits what a plug-in NX 450h+ can do. Ask your building about Level 2 charging before buying the plug-in. A plug-in or hybrid that sits in a garage near the Intracoastal also needs a battery maintainer or regular drives during the off-season.

If the car lives outdoors, its interior faces the full afternoon sun. RepairPal carries an owner report of an NX 200t whose dash surface under the center vent cracked and peeled from sun exposure. A windshield shade and legal tint cost far less than a dash repair, and they keep the touchscreen from hitting heat-protection limits on a July afternoon.

During hurricane season, a plug-in hybrid adds a high-voltage battery to the flood calculation. Move it to higher ground before surge or heavy flooding, and if salt water reaches the floor, have a dealer inspect it before you charge or drive it.

Lexus NX FAQ

Which Lexus NX years are best to buy used?

The 2018-2021 NX 300h and NX 300 offer the best mix of price and maturity, as long as the fuel pump recall is closed on the turbo. For a newer car, 2023 and later avoid most of the 2022 first-year recalls.

What is the difference between the NX 200t and NX 300?

Only the name. The NX 200t was renamed NX 300 for the 2018 facelift. Both use the same 2.0-liter turbo four and 6-speed automatic.

Is the NX 450h+ a good choice in South Florida?

If you can charge at home every night, yes. It runs short local trips on electricity and has a hybrid fallback for I-95 drives. Without home charging, the NX 350h is simpler and cheaper.

Do I need a dealer to service my NX?

Not for routine work. The NX shares a lot of hardware with the Toyota RAV4, and a good independent can handle oil, brakes and suspension. Recalls, warranty work and hybrid battery claims go to a Lexus dealer.

Guides for Lexus NX owners

Check engine light on but the car drives fine: what does it mean?
A steady check engine light means the engine computer has stored a fault code, most often for a loose gas cap, an oxygen sensor, an evaporative emissions leak or worn spark plugs. If the car drives normally and no other red warning is lit, you can usually keep driving for a few days, but get the code read soon so a small problem does not grow into a catalytic converter bill.
What's that clunking noise when I go over bumps?
A clunk or knock over bumps usually comes from worn sway bar end links, a tired strut mount, or worn control arm bushings, all of which let metal parts tap together. Before you book anything, empty the trunk and check that the spare and jack are tied down, because loose cargo makes the same sound. A clunk paired with loose or wandering steering can be a ball joint and needs prompt attention.
What is the price difference between a hybrid and a regular gas car?
A hybrid typically costs about $1,700 to $3,000 more than the same model with a regular gas engine. At Boca Raton's late October 2026 average of about $4.18 a gallon, a compact hybrid like the Corolla Hybrid saves roughly $470 to $590 a year in fuel and pays back its price gap in about 47,000 miles. Larger hybrid SUVs take longer, often 70,000 to 95,000 miles.
How much does a hybrid battery replacement cost?
Replacing a hybrid battery typically costs $2,700 to $5,500 with a new pack from a dealer for a compact car like a Prius, and $4,500 to $8,000 for larger hybrids. A remanufactured pack from an independent hybrid specialist usually runs $1,500 to $3,000. Check the warranty first, since many hybrid batteries are covered for 8 to 10 years.
How do I keep the Florida sun from cracking or melting my dashboard?
The cheapest protection is a fitted windshield sunshade every time you park, plus a water-based UV protectant on the dash every few weeks. A dashboard in a sunny parked car can average over 150 degrees within an hour, and that heat dries out the plastic until it cracks or makes some dashes go soft and sticky. Once a dash is cracked, a molded cover is the affordable fix, because full replacement often runs $800-$2,500 with airbag work.
Does Florida heat hurt an EV battery?
Yes, but less than many owners fear. Fleet data from Geotab shows EVs in hot climates lose battery capacity about 0.4 percentage points faster per year than those in mild climates, on top of an average of about 2.3 percent a year. Heat also cuts day-to-day range when the A/C runs hard. Charging habits and where you park matter more than the climate itself.
