The Lexus ES is about as low-risk as a used luxury sedan gets, but the year matters. On 2007-2012 ES 350s, confirm the Takata passenger airbag was replaced, because Florida cars were first in line for that recall. On 2018-2020 cars, check the fuel pump recall. The hybrid ES 300h is the most reliable version on RepairPal's numbers.
The ES is the quiet, front-drive Lexus sedan that fills parking lots from Mizner Park to the medical offices along Meadows Road. It shares its basic engineering with the Toyota Camry and Avalon, which keeps parts available and repair costs down. RepairPal rates the ES 350 at 4.0 out of 5, fourth of 31 luxury midsize cars, at about $468 a year in repairs and maintenance. The ES 300h hybrid does even better at 4.5 out of 5 and third in the class, at about $524 a year.
From 2007 through 2025, every ES 350 used a 3.5-liter V6, and since 2013 the ES 300h has paired a 2.5-liter four with Lexus's hybrid system. The 2026 redesign broke that pattern: the V6 is gone, and the new ES is sold as the ES 350h hybrid or as the fully electric ES 350e and ES 500e.
Problems on the ES tend to be specific and dated rather than chronic. The fifth generation carries the Takata airbag history and the heat-damaged dashboards. Later cars mostly have one-off recalls tied to a few months of production, which a VIN check settles in a minute.
Lexus ES generations
Eighth generation (XZ20)
2026-presentThe first ES without a V6 and the first fully electric ES. Too new for any reliability record.
Seventh generation (XZ10)
2019-2025Built in Kentucky and Japan. Refreshed for 2022 with a new grille and a touchscreen. The ES 300h is rated 44 mpg combined by the EPA.
Sixth generation (XV60)
2013-2018First hybrid ES. Refreshed for 2016, when ES 350 production began in Kentucky, making it the first Lexus built in the U.S.
Fifth generation (XV40)
2007-2012Refreshed for 2010 with a revised grille, mirror turn signals and more standard features. The most common budget ES on the used market today.
Known Lexus ES problems by year
Takata passenger airbag inflators
The propellant in these inflators breaks down with heat and humidity and can rupture in a crash, spraying metal fragments. Toyota's first waves specifically targeted cars originally sold or ever registered in Florida and other Gulf and southern states. Many fifth-generation ES 350s have changed hands several times, so do not assume a previous owner answered the letter. If the VIN shows the recall open, ask the dealer about towing rather than driving the car in.
Dashboard that turns soft, shiny and sticky
CarComplaints lists the melting dashboard as the most reported problem on the 2007 ES 350, with an average repair near $2,500. The surface goes tacky and throws glare onto the windshield. Lexus's extended coverage for this has long expired, so the practical fixes now are a used dash from a garage-kept car, a molded cover, or living with it and using a shade.
Guide: How do I keep the Florida sun from cracking or melting my dashboard?Oil leak from the VVT oil line on early V6 cars
The original oil line to the variable valve timing system had a rubber section that could rupture and dump oil fast. RepairPal lists a massive oil leak with loss of oil pressure among ES 350 problems. A car that has had the redesigned replacement line fitted is fine. On a car with no record of it, have a shop look before you buy; it is a short, inexpensive job compared with an engine.
Guide: Oil pressure light came on while driving: what to do right nowPre-Collision System braking with nothing ahead
On cars with the optional radar Pre-Collision System, the radar could read a steel joint or plate in the roadway as an obstacle and apply the brakes on its own. Dealers replace certain PCS components free. Bridge expansion joints are common on I-95 and the Intracoastal crossings, so an open recall here is worth handling before highway driving.
Hybrid brake booster pump and cracked engine castings
Two early seventh-generation hybrid problems. On some 2019 cars, the brake booster pump could fail, switching off stability control and reducing power assist, which makes the pedal feel much harder. On some 2020 cars, porosity in the 2.5-liter engine casting could crack and leak coolant internally or externally, which can overheat and damage the engine. Both are dealer repairs at no charge; the second can mean a replacement engine.
Guide: Sweet smell from my car, like maple syrup: is it a coolant leak?Low-pressure fuel pump failure
The pump inside the fuel tank can stop working and stall the engine, sometimes after a period of rough running or a check engine light. It is the same Denso pump recalled across a long list of Toyota and Lexus models, and the replacement is free.
Passenger airbag occupant sensor short
A short circuit in the passenger seat sensor can stop the front passenger airbag from deploying. Watch for a passenger airbag off light with an adult seated. The seat sensor is replaced free at a dealer.
Notable recalls
- 19V-741 (2007-2012 ES 350): One of several Takata passenger inflator campaigns covering this ES. The inflator can rupture in a crash. Replaced free.
- 15V-728 (2013-2015 ES 350 and ES 300h with Pre-Collision System): Radar may read a steel joint or plate in the road as an object and brake unexpectedly. Dealers replace certain PCS components.
- 19V-544 (2019 ES 300h): Brake booster pump may fail, deactivating stability control and reducing braking assist.
- 20V-064 (2020 ES 300h): Porosity in the 2.5-liter engine casting can crack and leak coolant, risking overheating and engine damage.
- 20V-682 (2018-2020 ES 350): Low-pressure fuel pump inside the tank may fail and cause a stall. Pump replaced free.
- 23V-865 (2020-2021 ES 350 and ES 250, 2020-2022 ES 300h): Occupant classification sensor can short circuit and prevent the front passenger airbag from deploying.
Recall repairs are free at any franchised Lexus dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, since this list is not complete.
Maintenance that matters
| Every 5,000 miles | Tire rotation. Front-drive ES sedans wear the front tires faster, and rotation keeps the set even. |
| Every 10,000 miles or 12 months | Synthetic oil and filter, whichever comes first. A low-mileage Boca ES still needs the yearly change. |
| Every 15,000-20,000 miles | Cabin air filter, more often if the car smells musty when the A/C starts. |
| Every 30,000 miles | Engine air filter, brake fluid check, and on the ES 300h a cleaning of the hybrid battery cooling intake. |
| Around 60,000 miles | Transmission fluid inspection on the ES 350, and a look at the water pump and drive belt on V6 cars from 2007-2018. |
| Around 120,000 miles | Iridium spark plugs. Hybrids also have an inverter coolant change on their own schedule. |
Confirm against your owner's manual or maintenance minder for your exact year and engine.

Buying a used Lexus ES
- Best value: a 2016-2018 ES 350 or ES 300h. The refreshed sixth generation is past its PCS recall era, uses the well-known V6 or the 40 mpg hybrid, and sells for much less than a seventh-generation car.
- Best overall: 2021-2025 ES 300h. It added a lithium-ion battery from 2021, it is rated 44 mpg, and RepairPal ranks the ES 300h among the most reliable cars in its class. Confirm the 23V-865 sensor recall on 2021-2022 cars.
- Approach 2019-2020 ES 300h carefully. Check that 19V-544 is complete on a 2019 and 20V-064 on a 2020, and on a 2020 ask whether the engine was replaced under the recall.
- A 2007-2012 ES 350 can still be a good cheap car, but only with proof of the Takata replacement, the metal VVT oil line on 2007-2008 cars, and a dash you can live with. Florida cars are the ones most likely to have needed all three.
The Florida factor
Florida sits in the zone NHTSA and Toyota treated as highest risk for Takata inflators, because years of heat and humidity speed the propellant breakdown. A fifth-generation ES that has spent its whole life parked outside in Boca is exactly the car the recall was written for. Run the VIN even if the seller says it was done.
The ES rides low, and its front air dam and lower engine cover sit close to the road. After an afternoon storm, standing water on Palmetto Park Road or the lots around Mizner can be deeper than it looks. Water above the bottom of the doors can reach the air intake on a sedan this low, so go around it.
Sun is the other enemy. Dark ES interiors with real wood trim crack and fade when the car lives outdoors, and the 2007-2008 dash can go sticky. A windshield shade and Florida-legal tint protect the dash and trim, and they help the A/C cool the cabin faster in traffic on Glades Road.

Lexus ES FAQ
Which Lexus ES years are the most reliable?
The 2016-2018 ES 350 and ES 300h, and the 2021-2025 ES 300h, are the safest used picks. Avoid any 2007-2012 ES 350 without proof that the Takata passenger airbag was replaced.
Is the ES 300h hybrid worth it?
For Boca driving, usually. The EPA rates the 2019-2025 ES 300h at 44 mpg combined against about 26 for the ES 350, its brake pads last longer, and RepairPal rates it 4.5 out of 5.
Does the 2026 Lexus ES have a V6?
No. The eighth-generation ES is sold as the ES 350h hybrid with a 2.5-liter four, or as the battery-electric ES 350e and ES 500e. For a V6, shop a 2025 or earlier ES 350.
Can a Toyota shop work on a Lexus ES?
Usually. The ES shares its engines and much of its hardware with the Camry and Avalon. Use Lexus-spec fluids and a scan tool that reads Lexus systems.
