European and US Fuel Octane Ratings Compared

European and US Fuel Octane Ratings Compared

Drivers of European premium vehicles, such as Mercedes, BMW, and Audi, may notice that gas stations in Europe list 95 octane fuel, while US stations list 91 or 93 octane. The difference lies in the measurement methods used. Europe uses the RON (Research Octane Number) method, while the US uses the AKI (Anti-Knock Index) method, which averages two test results.

As a result, European 95 RON is equivalent to US 91 AKI. This means that US premium fuel meets the requirements for vehicles that call for premium unleaded 91 octane or higher. For older models or tuned engines, using top-tier fuel brands can help maintain engine cleanliness, particularly in direct-injection engines found in many modern European and Japanese cars.

Issues such as pinging, hesitation, or check-engine lights after filling up may not be related to fuel quality, but rather to other factors like sensor problems, carbon buildup, or tuning issues.
