Why Your Mercedes May Stumble on a Cold Start - and What to Do About It

Why Your Mercedes May Stumble on a Cold Start - and What to Do About It

If you own a Mercedes-Benz with the M276 engine — common in many E-Class, ML, and GL models from the 2010s — you might notice a rough idle or stumble when the engine is cold. It’s a complaint we hear from time to time at our shop, and the most likely cause is a leaky fuel injector.

That small drip can upset the air-fuel mixture until the engine warms up, causing that momentary hesitation.

What does this mean for you? If your car feels shaky or hesitant in the first minute after starting on a cool morning, don’t ignore it. A leaking injector can also trigger a check engine light, reduce fuel economy, and in some cases lead to more serious issues if left alone.

This isn’t just a Mercedes issue. Similar cold-start symptoms can appear in BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, and Honda vehicles — including hybrids — often caused by injector deposits or wear. But the good news is it’s a fixable problem. At our family-run shop, we’ve been diagnosing and repairing these engines since 1989.

We’ll inspect your fuel system, pinpoint the culprit, and recommend the right repair — no guesswork, no unnecessary work.

If you’ve noticed a cold-start stumble in your European or Japanese car, bring it by. We’ll take a look and get you back to a smooth start every time.
