Why Your Mercedes Distronic May Be Acting Up - And How to Fix It

Why Your Mercedes Distronic May Be Acting Up - And How to Fix It

If you own a Mercedes-Benz SL55, SL63, SL65, or other R230 model with Distronic cruise control, you might have noticed it disengaging for no clear reason. A recent deep dive into this issue revealed a common culprit: corrosion in the electrical connectors that link the radar sensor behind the grille to the control module under the passenger footwell.

Here’s what happened: A technician spent hours using diagnostic tools and found a communication error in the stability control module (code C1590). The fix was simpler than expected – cleaning the connector pins. The radar connectors were sealed and looked fine, but the module’s pins had visible corrosion.

After a careful cleaning with fine files and sandpaper (no special cleaner needed), the system worked perfectly again.

Why does this matter to you? Mercedes-Benz vehicles of this vintage are known for connector deterioration, which can cause momentary communication glitches. Those glitches make the Distronic system shut off as a safety precaution – even if nothing else seems wrong.
