Why Your Car Repair Bill Keeps Getting Bigger

Why Your Car Repair Bill Keeps Getting Bigger

Owning a car has never been cheap, but lately it’s getting downright painful. Between sky-high fuel prices, mandatory insurance, and the instant depreciation that hits the moment you drive off the lot, vehicles have always been a questionable investment. Now, with new car prices at record highs, more drivers are holding onto their older vehicles or shopping used.

The problem? Repair costs are climbing faster than ever, eating away at any savings you might have hoped for.

There’s no single culprit behind this surge. Instead, it’s a messy mix of factors: modern cars packed with fragile technology, senseless tariffs, rising labor and supply chain costs, and a serious shortage of skilled mechanics. 1% in June. That adds up to roughly 5% higher than the same period in 2025.

Today’s vehicles come loaded with features we once considered luxuries, air conditioning, power windows, Bluetooth, backup cameras, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). But those same features are delicate and expensive to fix. A 2023 AAA study found that ADAS repairs account for more than a third of post-crash costs.

Even a simple windshield replacement can balloon in price when technicians have to recalibrate forward-facing cameras. Older cars with manual windows, basic radios, and plastic bumpers were far simpler and cheaper to maintain.

Beyond technology, inflation, global supply chain snags, and tariffs are hitting repair shops hard. Drivers are also keeping their cars longer, which leads to bigger, costlier repairs down the road. At this point, it’s a tough choice: keep your aging car and face mounting repair bills, or buy new and deal with high monthly payments and warranty-covered fixes that still cost you in insurance premiums.

Either way, the price of staying on the road keeps going up.
