Why the Jeep Commander is the Used SUV Bargain You’ve Been Overlooking

Back in the mid-2000s, Jeep wanted a piece of the seven-seat SUV pie that rivals like Ford’s Explorer had already gobbled up. Their answer was the Commander, a boxy, off-road-capable people mover built on the same bones as the Grand Cherokee. But buyers weren’t biting; sales tanked compared to its sibling.

Fast forward to 2026, and that flop status has turned into a steal for anyone hunting an affordable three-row SUV with real 4WD chops. You can snag a well-equipped Commander for under $10,000, sometimes as low as $4,000 for a base model.

What makes the Commander such a smart used buy? For starters, the interior was endlessly flexible. Both the second and third rows could fold flat individually, letting you haul six passengers and cargo, or all seven seats down for a massive load floor. 7L Hemi V8 pumping out 330 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque.

The Hemi is actually the most reliable of the bunch, and with fuel economy around 16 mpg, it’s no worse than its rivals. Annual maintenance runs about $639, which undercuts the Ford Explorer and Chevy Tahoe.

If you’re shopping, aim for later model years (2009-2010) and higher trims like the Limited or Overland. The Overland came standard with Hemi power, Quadra-Drive II 4WD with electronic locking diffs, leather seats, navigation, and even a trailer tow package. Prices for these top-spec rigs typically top out around $8,000, $9,000, a fraction of what you’d pay for a comparable Tahoe or Explorer.

Is the Commander a beauty queen? Not exactly, the styling is boxy and a bit awkward. But for a rugged, roomy, and cheap seven-seat SUV that laughs at rough trails, it’s a deal that’s hard to beat. Swing by Boca Auto Care for a pre-purchase inspection and we’ll help you pick the right one.
