Why Older Toyota Land Cruisers Are the Ultimate Appreciation Machines

Why Older Toyota Land Cruisers Are the Ultimate Appreciation Machines

The Toyota Land Cruiser started as a tool for global survival, but after eight generations and more than 10 million examples, it has become one of the most respected nameplates on the market. The FZJ80, J100, and J200 generations are the ones enthusiasts are watching.

These three generations moved the Land Cruiser upmarket without losing its off-road mission. The 80-series introduced full-time 4WD and optional triple-locking differentials, the J100 added V8 power and self-leveling suspension, and the J200 refined the formula with KDSS, crawl control, hill assist, and terrain select.

Toyota's focus on durability is a big part of the appeal. 7-liter V8 is considered one of the most reliable modern Toyota truck engines, with some examples reported past 1,000,000 miles. It has few customer complaints and no major engine recalls; the generation's notable recalls involve a low-pressure fuel pump that could fail, affecting 2015, 2018, and 2019 models.

com shows average sale prices of $15,135 for the FJ80, $23,983 for the FZJ80, $22,723 for the J100, and $85,186 for the J200. Top sales hit $35,250, $72,000, $67,000, and $133,000, respectively. The J200's average has settled from about $96,000 to $80,000, putting it closer to its original MSRP, while clean examples still fetch over $80,000.

The new J250 Land Cruiser has actually pushed buyers toward older models. It sits in a lower category, overlaps with the 4Runner, and is essentially the 'junior' Land Cruiser known elsewhere as the Prado. Its turbo four-cylinder engine has disappointed some fans, and the shared-platform Lexus GX's V6 costs about $10,000 extra.

With no V8 on offer, many buyers are turning to the used market, keeping demand and prices strong for these rugged, understated SUVs.
