Why Hybrids Are Stealing the Show This Summer

Why Hybrids Are Stealing the Show This Summer

Gas prices are climbing again, up 30 percent from last year, and Americans are feeling the pinch at the pump. S. drivers are taking a different route. Instead of going all-in on battery power, they're embracing hybrids: cars that pair a gas engine with an electric motor to stretch every gallon.

Kelley Blue Book projects hybrid sales will rise 9 percent this year, even as overall car sales dip more than 2 percent. The reason? Hybrids offer fuel savings without the anxiety of finding a charger.

Analysts say it's not just about gas prices. Hybrids are more available than ever, and the price gap between a hybrid and a conventional gas model has shrunk to just a few thousand dollars. For many buyers, that's a small premium for big savings. “People are looking to save; they have range anxiety.

com. Toyota has been the biggest beneficiary: nearly every model in its lineup now offers a hybrid version, and the Camry and RAV4 are hybrid-only. Toyota reported hybrid sales up nearly 20 percent this quarter. Honda, Hyundai, and Kia have also posted strong hybrid numbers, while Ford’s Maverick truck is winning over buyers with its hybrid trim.

Even Tesla owners are getting in on the action, more than 20 percent of those trading in their EVs this spring bought a hybrid.

The hybrid surge doesn't spell doom for electric cars, experts say. Stephanie Brinley, associate director at Mobility Global, notes that hybrids have been around for 25 years and now make up 15 percent of the market. EVs are expected to hit 12 percent by 2030, a faster adoption curve.

“When buyers say, ‘I’ll look at this hybrid,’ that’s opening up a willingness to consider something that’s not traditional,” she says. For now, hybrids are bridging the gap, and they're here to stay.
