Why Honda’s Tire Repair Kit Is Under Recall - and What It Means for Your Car

Why Honda’s Tire Repair Kit Is Under Recall - and What It Means for Your Car

If you drive a Honda hybrid, you may have a hidden risk in your trunk. Honda has recalled over 1 million vehicles because the emergency tire repair kit can unexpectedly build pressure and shoot its cap off like a projectile. Eight people have been hurt so far, and more than 50 warranty claims have been filed.

The recall covers 2023–2026 Honda CR-V Hybrids, 2023–2026 Accord Hybrids, and a small number of fuel-cell CR-Vs. The problem? If the repair kit’s nozzle isn’t screwed on just right, pressure can build inside the sealant bottle. A relief valve is supposed to vent that pressure, but some valves don’t work properly.

When pressure gets high enough, the bottle cap can detach with enough force to injure someone nearby.

Honda dealers will replace the nozzle or install a redesigned sealant bottle that removes the faulty one-way valve. If you own one of these Hondas, your local shop can inspect the kit and confirm whether it needs attention. While this recall doesn’t directly affect Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, or Honda vehicles without this specific kit, it’s a good reminder: tire repair kits are handy, but they’re not foolproof.

If your car uses a similar kit, it’s worth checking that the nozzle and bottle are in good shape.
