Why Fixing Your High-Tech Car Is Getting More Expensive

Why Fixing Your High-Tech Car Is Getting More Expensive

If you drive a newer Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, or Honda—including hybrids—your car is packed with safety tech. That's great for avoiding accidents, but it means repairs cost more than they used to.

Take a cracked windshield. On many modern cars, the camera behind the rearview mirror helps with lane-keeping, automatic braking, and cruise control. Replace that glass without recalibrating the camera, and those systems won't work right. That job can now run over $1,000 instead of a few hundred.

Bumpers aren't simple anymore, either. Park too close and tap a curb, and you might damage parking sensors or radar modules hiding behind the plastic. A minor rear hit can easily run $1,700, with nearly half that cost tied to those electronics.

And it's not just sensors. Many cars now use high-strength steel and aluminum that can't be bent back into shape. Damaged sections get cut out and replaced, which takes special tools and certified training. That adds days to your repair—and money to your insurance bill.

Insurance companies have noticed. Claims under $2,000 are shrinking, while big, expensive claims are growing. Premiums are up, and cars with three or more driver-assist features spend nearly four extra days in the shop.

What should you do? Before buying your next car, ask your insurer about repair costs. Make sure your policy covers camera and sensor recalibration. And if you need a repair, choose a shop that has the equipment to do it right.

At Boca Auto Care, we've been serving Boca Raton drivers since 1989. We have the tools and training to properly calibrate your car's safety systems after any repair.
