Why Experts Warn That Older Gasoline Standards Could Damage Your Engine

Russia has temporarily allowed some refineries to produce Euro-3 gasoline through 2026, a fuel standard that was common in Europe back in the early 2000s. While the move is meant to keep the domestic fuel supply stable, automotive expert Artem Bobtsov warns that drivers could face real risks over time.

The problem, Bobtsov explained, builds up gradually. This older fuel leaves extra carbon deposits inside the engine's cylinders and combustion chamber, which can lead to higher detonation and faster wear on critical parts. Many older cars can handle Euro-3 without trouble, but modern vehicles—especially newer Chinese models—were designed for higher-grade fuels and may not perform as well.

Government officials have acknowledged the concern. After internal discussions, they decided the measure is only temporary. Once the fuel supply situation improves, the expert noted, the relaxation will be scrapped. The official decree, published on Russia's legal acts portal, gives select refineries until the end of 2026 to produce the lower-standard gasoline.

The decision comes amid broader efforts to stabilize the domestic fuel market, following earlier calls from regional leaders to cut down on gasoline consumption.
