Why Convertibles and Minivans Are Now the Smart Buys in a Sky-High Car Market

Why Convertibles and Minivans Are Now the Smart Buys in a Sky-High Car Market

If you’ve been shopping for a new car lately, you already know the sticker shock is real. S. hit a record $51,974 at the end of June, that’s up nearly $2,400 from last year. Mid-size SUVs took the biggest hit, climbing more than $3,200. Even mid-size sedans, the traditional budget option, went up by $262.

Between high-tech features, stricter regulations, tariffs, and lingering supply chain headaches, automakers are passing those costs straight to buyers. Many people are either holding onto their current cars longer or heading to the used lot.

But here’s the twist: not every segment is getting more expensive. While most new cars are breaking the bank, convertibles and minivans are actually getting cheaper. Convertibles have dropped nearly 10% in average price, more than three times the decline seen in minivans. 2% price dip as crossovers and SUVs stole their spotlight.

Convertibles, once the symbol of American road-trip freedom, became a niche after the 1970s oil crisis and safety regulations kicked in. Their lower demand is now working in buyers’ favor.

So if you’re in the market for a new ride, these two overlooked categories could save you thousands. And timing matters too: shop at the end of a model year, or on a Monday when dealerships are quiet, and you’ll have more leverage. Avoid unnecessary add-ons and visit multiple dealers before you commit.

The market may be tough, but the bargains are still out there, you just have to know where to look.
