Why a 5-Year-Old Top-Tier Ford F-150 Beats a New One by Nearly $50,000

Why a 5-Year-Old Top-Tier Ford F-150 Beats a New One by Nearly $50,000

There’s no denying the appeal of a brand-new truck. That first drive, the pristine interior, the photos in the driveway. But if you’re looking for real value, the smart money isn’t on a base-model 2026 F-150. It’s on a five-year-old, fully-loaded 2020 Ford F-150 Limited. At roughly half its original sticker price, this truck delivers more horsepower, more features, and a lot less financial sting than anything new in the same price bracket.

The 2020 F-150 Limited was the top trim of the 13th generation, and it shows. Under the hood sits a twin-turbo V6 that cranks out 450 horsepower, more than the entry-level 2026 models. Standard kit includes leather seats with massage, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, and Ford’s CoPilot 360 safety suite.

It’s a truck that came loaded from the factory, and on the used market, you can find one in good condition for around $35,000. Compare that to the $82,000-plus you’d drop on a new Platinum with similar options, and you’re saving roughly $47,000.

Of course, ownership costs add up. Expect about $788 a year in maintenance, $2,424 for insurance, and $2,300 in fuel for a four-wheel-drive model driven 15,000 miles annually. That totals around $5,500 per year. But even with those expenses, the math still favors the used Limited.

D. 5-liter EcoBoost engine holds up well with regular care. The only thing you’re really missing is that new-car smell, and honestly, that fades fast. For anyone who doesn’t need to be the first owner, this is the smarter buy.
