Why a 15-Year-Old Mitsubishi Just Outsold Expectations Alongside a V8 Dodge

Here’s a head-scratcher for car shoppers: two of the oldest vehicles on the market, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and the Dodge Durango, are posting some of their best sales numbers in years. The Outlander Sport has been rolling off the line in its first generation since 2011. The Durango’s current generation dates back to the same year.

In an industry obsessed with the newest tech and freshest designs, these two throwbacks are quietly cleaning up.

The Outlander Sport isn’t winning any awards for driving excitement. Critics have long called it underpowered, plasticky, and dated. Yet Mitsubishi moved 20,508 units in the first half of 2026, its best first-half performance since 2021. The secret? Price. With average new-car loans topping $50,000 and interest rates still high, Mitsubishi leaned into affordability.

Base trims start under $25,000, and every Outlander Sport comes with standard all-wheel drive, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. For buyers who just need a reliable daily driver that won’t break the bank, it’s a no-brainer.

Across the aisle, the Dodge Durango took a different route to the same result. It sold 38,575 units in the first half of 2026 by leaning hard into what its rivals abandoned: a big V8 engine. While competitors stuffed their three-row SUVs with turbo four-cylinders and hybrid systems, Dodge kept the HEMI V8 on the menu and dropped the price.

The Durango tows up to 8,700 pounds, best in class, and its cabin still has actual knobs and buttons. That analog simplicity is a selling point for buyers tired of fighting touchscreens. Both the Mitsubishi and the Dodge prove that sometimes, sticking with what works, and keeping it affordable, beats chasing the next big thing.
