Who Really Owns Your Neighborhood Auto Shop? The Six Giants Behind the Signs

Who Really Owns Your Neighborhood Auto Shop? The Six Giants Behind the Signs

Mavis Tire just bought Pep Boys for $700 million, making one of the country's biggest tire chains even bigger. But the real story isn't the deal itself, it's what it reveals about the shop on your corner. That familiar local garage with the name you've trusted for decades? There's a good chance it's owned by one of just six massive holding companies, most of them backed by private equity.

The playbook is simple: a private equity firm buys a beloved regional chain, then keeps the old sign out front. That local brand equity is exactly what they paid for, so painting over it would be throwing money away. Mavis, for example, flies banners like NTB, Tire Kingdom, Tuffy, and Midas alongside its own name.

Driven Brands, controlled by Roark Capital, runs Take 5 Oil Change, Meineke, Maaco, and CARSTAR. Monro operates 16 regional names including Mr. Tire and Tire Choice. Bridgestone owns Firestone Complete Auto Care and Tires Plus. Valvoline now runs its oil-change shops separately from its oil manufacturing.

3 billion.

For customers, this consolidation cuts both ways. Bigger networks mean better pricing, consistent warranties, and parts that arrive in 24 hours, things a mom-and-pop can't match. But fewer independent players means less competition, which can eventually lead to higher prices or a worse experience.

The signs out front still say a dozen different things. Behind them, the number of actual decision-makers keeps shrinking. Next time you pull into your favorite shop, you'll know who's really calling the shots.
