When Your Car Starts Talking, Here’s How to Listen

Strange noises under the hood or beneath the chassis are almost never a good sign. According to Nikita Arkhipov, head of service operations at the company Rolf, the driver’s first job isn’t to diagnose the sound by ear—it’s to decide whether the car can make it to a shop or needs a tow.

The key is to match the noise to the driving conditions.

If the sound changes with engine RPM, the issue is likely in the motor, belts, pulleys, alternator, or AC compressor. A hum that grows with speed points to wheel bearings, brakes, transmission parts, or tires. Clunks over bumps usually mean trouble in the suspension, steering, or engine mounts.

A metal grinding noise, especially during braking, often signals worn brake pads—steel on steel. Less common culprits include debris between the rotor and shield, a bent dust cover, or a collapsed hub bearing.

Dull thuds on rough roads typically come from stabilizer links, control arm bushings, tie rods, or worn shocks. A quiet tap on small bumps is usually safe to drive on; sharp, violent knocks with a crooked steering wheel or visible wheel wobble mean stop and call a tow. A loud, persistent clatter from the engine that doesn’t fade as it warms up—and gets worse under acceleration, with low oil pressure—is a reason to kill the ignition immediately.

High-pitched squealing from a belt, especially on cold starts or when the AC kicks on, is common; if it’s constant and smells like burnt rubber, the belt could snap.

A low, droning hum that rises with speed is almost certainly a failing wheel bearing—listen for a tone change in turns. The same effect can come from unevenly worn tires or low transmission fluid. A pinging or clicking sound under load, paired with power loss, suggests engine detonation.

Rattling from underneath is often a loose exhaust part. If you smell exhaust inside the cabin, stop driving. Arkhipov recommends recording the noise on video along with engine temperature, speed, RPM, gear, braking, and road surface—that concrete data is far more useful than a vague description when you hand the car to a mechanic.
