When 2,695 Horsepower Isn’t Enough: The Explosive Reality of Diesel Dyno Tuning

When 2,695 Horsepower Isn’t Enough: The Explosive Reality of Diesel Dyno Tuning

Every year, the Ultimate Callout Challenge in Indianapolis draws the most extreme diesel trucks on the planet. For enthusiasts, it’s a spectacle of raw power and innovation. For the shops behind those rigs, it’s a high-stakes gamble where one small failure can turn a dyno run into a fireball.

That’s exactly what happened to JBJ Diesel of Idaho over the weekend.

Jake Rodriguez’s third-gen Ram was cranking out an impressive 2,695 horsepower on the dyno, with the engine still climbing, when a nitrous controller malfunctioned. The result was catastrophic: the engine let go in a dramatic explosion captured on video. For context, that same truck had previously hit 3,342 hp at last year’s Diesels in the Mountains event, and the team had hopes of challenging Poor Boys Diesel’s 3,825 hp mark.

Instead, Rodriguez and his crew swapped in a spare Cummins to finish the competition, including a sled pull the next day.

What can the average driver learn from this? Nitrous oxide systems dramatically increase cylinder pressure, often beyond what stock components can handle. Even with aftermarket internals, a controller failure can spike pressure instantly, turning a precision machine into scrap metal.

It’s a reminder that performance modifications require meticulous maintenance and professional oversight—whether you’re pushing 3,000 hp or just adding a cold-air intake to a daily driver.

Rodriguez has already hinted at rebuilding the Ram for next year’s UCC. Given his track record, expect a contender that’s both fast and photogenic. In the meantime, if you’re thinking about pushing your own vehicle’s limits, consult a certified mechanic who understands the risks.

A dyno run is a controlled test—but only if every component is up to the task.
