What’s Driving the BMW X3 M50 to the Top of M’s Sales Charts

BMW M’s biggest news from the Goodwood Festival of Speed may have been about electric future models like the M3 and X5 M60e, but the most telling story right now is about what’s actually moving off dealer lots. According to Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, the X3 M50 has claimed the title of M’s best-selling model worldwide for the first half of this year.
The reasons behind that shift reveal a lot about where the brand’s lineup stands today.
Part of the X3 M50’s success comes down to simple timing. BMW M has spent the first half of the year without several models that typically compete for sales in this segment. The full-performance X3M and X4M are currently absent from the lineup, and the M40i versions of both the X3 and X4 have been discontinued.
That leaves a wide-open space at the top of the compact SUV range, and van Meel says the M50 is now capturing demand that would have previously gone to those pricier, track-focused siblings.
But van Meel is quick to note that the X3 M50 isn’t just winning by default. BMW put serious engineering into the current X3, boosting body stiffness and adding power to a degree that van Meel now calls it a “Performance Plus” vehicle in its own right. That combination, more grunt, a stiffer chassis, and no internal competition, has generated what he describes as an “enormous” global response.
Meanwhile, the i4 M50/M60, which held the top sales spot for a long stretch, is seeing gradual declines as it nears the end of its production cycle. Looking ahead, 2027 brings a wave of new M products, starting with the electric M3, followed by models like the iX3 M60 and iX5 M60.
The brand expects sales momentum to stay strong.
