W Engines: High-Performance Powertrains

Volkswagen Group, the company behind Audi, Bentley, and Bugatti, has produced rare, high-performance engines known as W12 and W16. These engines arrange cylinders in three or four banks, allowing for more cylinders in a smaller space compared to traditional V engines. The W engine configuration has been used in special models such as the VW Passat W8 (2001-2005), Audi A8 W12, Bentley Continental GT, and the Bugatti Veyron and Chiron.

These powertrains offer increased power but also lower fuel economy and higher cost. Most European and Japanese cars, including those from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, and Honda, feature more common inline or V engine configurations. However, if issues such as unusual vibration, rough idle, or a check-engine light arise, it is recommended to have a professional inspect the vehicle.

The Volkswagen Group's W engines are notable for their unique design and performance capabilities, but are not commonly found in everyday vehicles.
