What Really Causes Car Fires? Electrical and Fuel System Issues Lead the Way

ru. The leading cause is a short circuit in the onboard electrical system. Wire insulation dries out and cracks, contacts oxidize and loosen, and amateur installations of alarms, audio systems or pre-heaters often add to the danger. Nonstandard fuses and homemade winter heating devices also raise the risk.

The second most common cause is a fuel-system leak. Drops of gasoline or oil from loose connections can ignite on a hot engine or exhaust manifold. Aging rubber hoses are another concern, as they crack and break the seal.

Prevention comes down to regular inspections, certified installation of electrical equipment, and careful checking of fuel lines and wiring, especially in the engine bay. Never use an open flame to warm an engine, and avoid storing flammables in unsealed containers. A working fire extinguisher should always be within reach, and drivers should know how to use it.
