What Parents Need to Know About Car Seat Rules for Kids Ages 7 to 11

What Parents Need to Know About Car Seat Rules for Kids Ages 7 to 11

If you’ve ever wondered whether your 8-year-old can ride in the back seat using just the regular seatbelt, the answer is yes, under certain conditions. Auto lawyer Lev Voropaev recently broke down the current traffic regulations for transporting children between 7 and 11 years old, and the rules depend on where they sit.

According to Voropaev, children in that age group can legally ride in the back seat either in a child restraint system or with the vehicle’s standard seatbelt, provided their height and weight are sufficient for the belt to fit correctly. “The traffic rules give parents a choice when it comes to the back seat,” he explained in an interview.

The key factor is safety: if the child is large enough that the lap and shoulder belt rest properly across their body, the standard belt is acceptable. Otherwise, a booster or car seat is still recommended.

However, the front seat is a different story. Voropaev stressed that for any child aged 7 to 11 riding in the front, a proper child car seat is mandatory, and it must be selected based on the child’s specific height and weight. No exceptions. This advice is especially important for families who occasionally need to fit an extra passenger up front.

The bottom line: back seat offers more flexibility, front seat requires a dedicated child seat. Knowing these rules can keep your kids safe and prevent a costly ticket.
