VW to Axe Half Its Models by 2030: Polo, Golf Safe, but Some Favorites in Danger

VW to Axe Half Its Models by 2030: Polo, Golf Safe, but Some Favorites in Danger

Volkswagen Group has announced a drastic plan to cut its global vehicle lineup by up to 50 percent before the decade is out, a move that will reshape everything from the cars on dealer lots to the factories that build them. The automaker says the cuts are part of a broader effort to slash costs and complexity, aiming to boost returns to between 8 and 10 percent while navigating a turbulent market.

In addition to halving the model count, VW intends to reduce powertrain options, trim levels, and equipment packages by 75 percent, eliminating what executives call “parallel structures” where different brands duplicate engineering work.

The company is also resizing production to match demand, targeting 9 million vehicles annually, roughly what it sold in 2024 and 2025. That means job cuts are on the table, with reports suggesting up to 100,000 positions could be eliminated and four German plants could close, which would mark the largest restructuring in automotive history.

While VW hasn’t named specific models for the chopping block, it says future spending will focus on the most attractive market segments and products that deliver the greatest value. 5 coupe-SUV are likely gone. The Taigo crossover overlaps too much with the T-Cross, and the combustion Polo is exiting Europe to make room for the electric ID.

Polo. The ID. Buzz has underperformed, casting doubt on a second generation.

Among the Group’s other brands, Skoda should survive mostly intact, though the slow-selling Scala hatchback may not see a successor. Seat is expected to stay small and cheap, while Cupra takes on a bigger role with pricier, sportier models. Audi has already dropped the A1 and Q2, and the aging A8 flagship looks vulnerable.

Porsche’s 911, Cayenne, and Macan are untouchable, but the Taycan and Panamera could merge into one model, putting niche body styles like the Taycan Sport Turismo at risk. Lamborghini shelved its first EV, Bentley pushes ahead with an electric SUV, and there’s chatter about selling off Lamborghini and Ducati.
