VW Tiguan R Spied With Golf R Power, But US Availability Remains Unclear

Volkswagen's hot Tiguan R has been caught testing again, and this time the prototype is showing its hand. While the white SUV looks like a standard Tiguan at first glance, closer inspection reveals clues that point to a serious performance model underneath.
The most obvious giveaway is the quad exhaust outlets at the rear, a feature not found on the R-Line trim. Up front, the corner vents are slightly larger to improve airflow. But the real story is under the skin. The prototype rides on large wheels with low-profile performance tires, and behind them sit big cross-drilled front rotors with substantial calipers.
According to sources, this Tiguan R could pack the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as the Euro-spec Golf R, producing up to 333 horsepower. It would also likely feature the Golf R's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring.
The big question isn't when the 2027 Tiguan R will debut, reports suggest it could happen within weeks, but whether it will be sold in America. So far, the prototypes spotted have been based on the European version of the Tiguan, which differs from the US model. The previous-generation Tiguan R was never offered in the US, and there's no confirmation yet that this one will be either.
For VW, bringing the Tiguan R to America could help revitalize interest in the brand. With EVs struggling and small hatches like the GTI and Golf R appealing to a limited audience, an SUV with that kind of performance could attract more buyers. The pieces seem to be in place, but VW hasn't said whether it will make the move.
