Volvo EX50 Reportedly Aimed at Replacing EX40 as a Bigger, More Affordable EV

Volvo is reportedly working on a new EX50 crossover to replace the EX40, and the model is expected to arrive in fall 2027. According to Automotive News, it will ride on the new SPA3 platform that debuted on the EX60 and be built at Volvo’s plant in Slovakia. Reports suggest the EX50 will be priced in the high $40,000s, making it significantly cheaper than today’s EX40, which starts at $56,545.
The current EX40 is only $3,250 less than the EX60, so the new model’s lower price could make it far more appealing. S. deliveries in its first year, though the automaker might prioritize production for Europe.
Few details are available, but the EX50 is said to be longer and taller than the EX40 and to use an 800V electrical architecture for faster charging. A Volvo spokesperson, Thomas McIntyre Schultz, declined to comment on the model but said the company would continue investing in expanding its EV lineup.
Separately, the gas-powered XC40 may live on after a facelift. Spy photographers in June caught an updated version undergoing testing in Spain. It shows a revised front fascia with a new grille and restyled headlights, plus a revamped bumper and lower intake. At the back, there’s a new bumper and updated taillights, along with smaller repositioned reflectors.
Inside, the cabin echoes the EX30, including a portrait-style infotainment system protruding above the dashboard.
